Recently, after going out to a local bar to watch a Rockets game (born and raised in Houston) I brought a few people back to my apartment for a night cap. After a beer I was asked if we could play some video games. I’m sure they were expecting Call of Duty Ghosts or Halo or the like but I had other plans. I brought out a couple of arcade sticks and popped in Third Strike. After hours of intense matches (I’m new to 3S myself) my guests were left amazed at how much fun they were having with a fighting game. I think that simply exposing people to fighting games and playing locally will be the one thing that can truly help to grow the FGC and expand the interest in fighting games beyond the ultra competitive. What are your thoughts? What’s the best way to expand our universe beyond tournaments?
Keep a fun environment that also encourages people to get better. Not every scene has to be focused on tournaments. Just get some food, beer, and games, and go nuts. Hold free tournaments for the hell of it. Do teams tournament, round robin tournaments. If they start to get serious about it, make a ranking sheet, so you guys can play for bragging rights. All of this without a single dime of entry fee.
If this gets to be a regular thing, you can start inviting more people over to join in on the fun.
If you’re good at fighting game, you must not play too hard on new players or else they may get disgusted on the game. When you play with new players, you can, for instance, only use low kick. It helps new players to learn from your simple strategies step by step. Training new players is what works best for me.
^This. Show it to your friends, but don’t just mercilessly beast them. Play around, let them have fun, get a feel for the game.
lol reminds me…I was doing something similar to that one time, but once the guy caught on and did manage to beat me he talked some serious shit and quit. Not something to take seriously though, he was just a douche.
LoL. Who needs a bunch of DB’s in the FGC anyway?
