Reboot of old school fighting games IP's

@ Great_Dark_Hero
the Fatal Fury series has way too many identity issues that need to be solidified. their gimmicks don’t really play well that’s why they ditched the dual plane format when Garou : Mark of the Wolves came out which was really polished and made the gameplay more dynamic since they were able to really focus on the system. the Darkstalkers series has been in demand for a long time so who knows…

i don’t want to turn this into a wishlist thread but do have any ideas how the games could be improved upon IF they do get a reboot at all? let’s go!!!

You know, a good Mega Man fighter would be great. Ignoring the Power Fighters games, of course.

Thats not quite true BR3 is pretty viable sure it has some BS but what game doesn’t, theres a lot of crazy stuff in the game but outside of Uranus nothing is really game breaking.

Now that Capcom is into Tag Couples, I would really like to see a Rival Schools Remake. I enjoyed that game.

@ Khentimentiu
you do know that it’s been YEARS since a Bloody Roar game came out, right? people have waaaaayyy higher “standards” these days when it comes to game mechanic/systems that they would like to think they are damn fighting game elitists. game breaking issues aside, the SF4 '09ers batch and onwards might frown if it doesn’t meet expectations even if the game aesthetics were up to par with other fighting games these days. if the gameplay is shitty balance-wise [and people WILL ALWAYS find something else to knock about the game] then it can’t be tourney viable.

this new game, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, is already receiving flak for being a “clone” because aesthetically, it looks great but the gameplay has yet to be tested for worthiness. a new Bloody Roar should be able to steer clear of such mediocrity if it gets rebooted.

@Dirus2099
the idea had occurred to me but considering Capcom looks to make SFxT as THE flagship game with that feature, it looks pretty slim they would incorporate that into a new Rival Schools game. maybe a newer team mechanic should be introduced to make it stand out? now that would really inject new life into the series.

8P

Thats what i was saying BR3 mechanics are solid with enough depth for it to be a viable tourney game even by todays standards (though honestly i think standards have dropped as of recent), later games in the series are admittedly not even close to being tourney viable.

Not that it really matters with the death of Hudson the chances of a new Bloody Roar are pretty much none existent, nor do i particularly trust them to make a new game after the last attempt.

@ Khentimentiu
not to be rude, but Bloody Roar 3 was really not solid enough in terms of system and mechanics since most of it’s “improvements” were pretty weak. Tekken Tag Tournament which came out the year before [BR3 was in 2001] on PS2 was leaps and bounds from the arcade version both aesthetically and content-wise. it had better graphics, pair play, better music and most of all, Tekken Bowling. if BR3 was really tournament-worthy, maybe it could have stayed around a little longer but unfortunately, it wasn’t. kinda felt that you needed to rely on the beast transformations which took out the fun since some of the alternate forms were overpowered or just plain sucked.

not sure if a lot of people know this but the co-developer of the Bloody Roar games, namely Eighting Co. Ltd., also worked on MvC3/UMvC3 with Capcom. go figure.

8P

lol trying to compare Tekken Tag to Bloody Roar 3 is like trying to compare Street Fighter to Guilty Gear, it just doesn’t work they are way too different, I’m not really sure what minigames have to do with anything but bowling mode sucked dick, Ball mode from T3 was infinitely better :stuck_out_tongue: anyway the console port of BR3 had extra features over its arcade version too, things like survival, sumo battle, high speed mode, hyper mode and other unlockables.

Yes in beast mode you are significantly stronger not only in terms of damage but you also gain new moves and tools such as jump cancelling, increased guard breaks and cancel points, chip damage, weight increase, heath regen, wall jumping, supers etc. that was the point, the trade off is beast costs meter the game had a huge focus on meter management and promoted smart use of beast mode.

Bloody Roar has always been a fairly obscure series of course its not going to get the same limelight as big name games like Street Fighter and Tekken but it had its fair share of tourneys and while it has not got a huge scene people still do play it to this day.

I don’t mean to call you out or start an argument i really don’t, just i feel theres a lot of misconception and ignorance surrounding the Bloody Roar series in general, the series took a huge nosedive after Bloody Roar 3 with Primal Fury/Extreme and BR4 dumbing down and removing many of the technical aspects of the game.

Not surprising since most of the time Bloody Roar gets mentioned scrubs either whine about Uriko being “almost unbeatable”, call the game “furfag shit”, and don’t even know the system mechanics the game had such as fast evade or the fact tons of moves had cancel points which allowed people to feint with tons of moves as well as create their own combos. I personally liked BR3 more than any Tekken game, but that’s just me. I preferred the fact the characters generally had faster movement and walkspeed.

Also wtf does a game having better music have to do with it being tourney worthy?

SNK really needs to get re-established with its base franchises, so I’m all about seeing that as well. CcS3 must happen someday, with this key factor: let that be Capcom’s return to 2D graphics.

But aside from stating the obvious, I’d like Capcom to do better things with the Marvel license while it has it. How about a straight up X-Men or MSH game again, using a less insane combat system. I loved the way those games played - they played a lot like Darkstalkers. The games would sell because Marvel is gold right now, and those of us who didn’t like the VS series’ gameplay would be able to join the party. A lot of big things have happened in comics since then, so source material for characters and the story is better than ever. What’s more is that this is the opportunity to bring back old favorite characters (like Psylocke) and to put in those that should have been in a long time ago (The Punisher).

I want a new (or more likely rebooted, almost nobody makes new games these days) weapon fighter. SCV just didn’t do it for me;

They need to ditch SC series and make Weaponlord in HD with all the mechanics and blood and gore.

@ Khentimentiu
fair enough. i did get to play the Bloody Roar series but not as hardcore as you seem to be. the points you raised are a little iffy since it mostly deals with the games gimmicks. transform to get additional moves? wouldn’t it be prudent to have everything available to you at all times so you can really crush your opposition on a whim? relying on meter or managing it properly is more of a crutch than a true gameplay tool. kind of like an SF4 Ultra.

i mentioned “content-wise” and Tekken Bowl was a surprisingly fun side game that was not based on the fighting game at all. the “features” you mentioned still had you playing the game with adjusted variables [hyper/sumo/high speed mode what have you] but not completely removed from the versus fighting. that’s what i meant. also, the series did have it’s own “hook” if you will, but past that, if the game had that much depth, how come it bombed instead of truly refining the formula which made it unique? also, TTT’s music was dope at the time, especially the Mokujin theme and had little to do with being tourney viable.

8P

Its not a come back mechanic like SF4 ultra its more like how in 3s Urien or Yun get a lot more scary with meter stocked, If you don’t like games with meter thats cool each to there own i can respect that.

As for why did they change the game? i don’t know, i guess they figured they could sell more games if they made it easier to play and more casualized, BR3 was also the last game in the series to get an arcade release, which kind of shows a shift in target audience.

Man honestly words cannot describe my disappointment with bowl mode after seeing ball mode from Tekken 3, stick a knife in my heart Namco. also i agree about the TTT music, i don’t know what the hell happened to the music in Tekken after that game but they need to go back to T3/TTT era.

With the huge popularity of competitive RPG-style games like DOTA and LoL. I would love to see Warzard rebooted to try out the FG RPG level building style again. Especially since the whole paid DLC is used nowadays, it may be a good money maker.

They might even use the LoL style of either buying characters or level boost through currency or earn it through points by constantly playing the game and earning buying points.

Are you for real about this? I never played weaponlord, I just remember reading a review about it in Gamepro (I think) and it looked pretty cool. Kind of like Samurai Shodown done Conan style.

Its actually a bad game with lots questionable decisions in gameplay. And it has nothing in common with Samurai Shodown.

@Araragi-kun
i beg to differ. if you knew your fighting game history, Weaponlord was pretty much ahead of it’s time. among others, it already had a parry system called Thrust Blocking a few years ahead before Capcom even released Streetfighter III New Generation. it also had Guard Breaks, Weapon Breaks and Deflects. how’s that for innovative? the system was a little awkward to learn since it did not have a real training mode that players can use to really become familiar with it. like every new game, it was possible to actually play the game well if you had invested some time into it. don’t start bashing a game just because you’re not familiar with it at all. you end up sounding like a total idiot who started playing fighting games when SF4 came out.

nothing in common you say? both Weaponlord and Samurai Shodown were weapon-based fighters. it just so happened that the latter was developed for an insanely powerful unit [Neo Geo] at the time whereas the former was intended for 16-bit systems. pretty remarkable job by Visual Concepts considering what they had been able to pull off on those consoles.

#1 Killer Instinct
Whether you like it or not, Killer Instinct left a defining mark on the Fighting Game genre. KI busted the door wide open for the insane combos & that ‘broken’ feel the VS games have. Maybe im wrong, but KI was the first game with the “big combo” gimmick. I would LOVE to see the new & improved Ultra Combos with the technology we have now in videogames. GREAT characters that ppl can attach to & its soundtrack is one of the best in videogames. KI2 (though broken now) had a good amount of depth, parries, hidden moves, & a ton of replay value. Just seeing another super violent fighting game on the market besides MK would be a blessing right now lol. I hope Netherrealm Studios is working hard on this game somewhere.

#2 Eternal Champions
GREAT storyline, GREAT characters. Sega screwed up bad by abandoning this game and many, MANY others. Eternal Champions reimaged in 3D with a solid fighting engine would be simply amazing. EC didn’t have a great fighting engine, but the potential was there everywhere else. I played it because I actually cared about the characters & it oozed creativity. The sad thing is that we’ll probably never see this game again. If i had the doe, i’d make it work. :frowning:

#3 Fighting Vipers
It was a great alternative to Virtua Fighter. I really liked the whole breakable armor system & punching ppl through walls lol. I remember Fighting Vipers 2 was supposed to come out around the time VF3 hit arcades, & then it just disappeared…and that’s pretty much when Sega lost their damn minds.

Honorable Mention Weapon Lord
This could be Namco’s violent alternative to Soul Calibur. WeaponLord was waaaaayyy ahead of its time. I remember when Gamepro magazine was making a huge deal about it during its development stages. Genesis & SNES just wasnt ready for that type of game. But WeaponLord right now would be dope.
