Apparently Im not alone:
ah, you beat me to it!
the Fighterpedia episode was fun and i think it’s a nice tribute to one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated old-school weapon-based fighter that was ever released. i played it when it came out and it was only through game magazines like EGM and GamePro that i could get any info on the game [move lists and character bios only, not much strategy]. it was pretty frustrating trying to learn and get good to play the game at the time. imagine the possibilities that Namco-Bandai could do with this IP given the available technology right now. aside from the violence/gore factor, the characters alone would be prime for intensive design overhaul into 3D models. it could be 2.5D or they could try giving it a similar system like that of the Soul series but no ring outs please. just pure, barbaric fighting. that would be awesome.
peace out.

Yeah, the animation was really choppy, it took a bit to get used to, but after that I was hooked. Never went back to SF until I got dreamcast.
Havent played it since high school, but still have those gamepro combo pages ripped out at the magrack, hahaa
I also heard that there was a lot of stuff that they left out due to time constraints
Always wanted to do that XBand thing but my parents werent down with that. I always thought it would be unbelievable to be able to play fighters against opponents over the internet from the convenience of home. Heads are so spoiled today. I ended up having to wait for xboxlive SFAE to finally realize this.

since we’re going Weaponlord crazy right now, here’s a little something to pique your interest even more. i found it over a year ago while browsing for old, forgotten games on some retro gaming sites and it’s really cool that somebody took the time to gather info on this game. great article about the game and it’s system and some cool links in there as well. i hope people get to read up on this and find out how overlooked this title was, although i think one of the main reasons it did not do too well was the very steep learning curve plus 32-bit consoles had dropped in at the time. kids were focusing their attention on the new toys and it never got the recognition it deserved as a decent fighter.
also, XBand was like the kickstarter to online gaming but from what i remember, aside from being expensive it was terribad back then. oh well, kids nowadays are pretty soft if you ask me…

wow
The gamespy interview link at the bottom of that page was very interesting (re: early capcom, early WC FG scene, influence of online play, etc…):
http://uk.gamespy.com/articles/954/954328p1.html
people complain about the move commands in WL, but I never had a problem. The moves in question werent even negative edge, just just held the button down and do the motion. This eliminated the need for any timing involved with move input errors, 2-in-1s were dead simple, couldnt have been easier even if it was a little different. After reading that interview which stated that many of the game’s mechanics were developed in response to latency issues with XBand, I am thinking that the reason for this control scheme for some of the moves may have been the online hiccups. Or maybe it was just an easy way to avoid ‘false positives’ with the huge movelists for each character
sorry for the derail, but Im enjoying this
@hubcapsignstop
i’m glad you liked the site article and links. personally, i think they were awesome and well written. obviously, i’m down with the throwback games and stuff that’s why i started this thread. and Fighterpedia doing a whole episode for Weaponlord is pretty bizarre or just gdlk coincidence. you decide. also, in the Gamespy article, for those not familiar with the name, Dave Winstead is none other than “Dr. Dave” of GamePro magazine fame. makes me feel so old right now, LOL!
nah, don’t sweat it. as long as we keep it sensible and relevant to the topic, i don’t see it as such. you can hit me up through PM’s if you wanna talk about stuff at length and let everybody else pitch in their choices for an IP reboot.
big ups to all of y’all who posted. which other dormant FG title is reboot-worthy for the rest of you?
peace out.

This is perhaps the prime example of how the influx of SF2 clones was such that players could not really tell good games from POS ones. My generation was fortunate to experience the SF2 glory days, just to love the characters but not really learn the game properly, then skip good games such as Weapon Lord in favor of utter crap such as MK1, MK2, Art of Fighting, etc. I do not think I have ever played Weapon Lord against anyone but the CPU. But played against humans at MK1, MK2, AoF, even that POS game where you see a guy doing some upwards framing Hadou (its name was Power Moves). But fighting the CPU quickly got old, so I finished the game with a couple of characters at a few difficulties and never played it again. This was in 2 weeks of the like, which was when I rented the game, something that was common back then at the cartridge era.
Its all good; I just resurrected the WeaponLord thread for no good reason:
hahaa
I remember that the only reason I created an account here at SRK was to rep WeaponLord. I got flamed immediately and told that it belonged alongside the likes of balls and clayfighter.
Deadly Moves by thge way. Man why sis I think that game was hype as a kid.
That game has like 3 or 4 names! I know Deadly Moves, Power Moves and Power Athlete. I did finish the game and it did have some OK tunes, but it was trash. As soon as you get maximum speed, you can lock everyone at the corner by walking and doing a long range normal attack.
@oldschool_BR
game rentals at Electronics Boutique was insane iirc, especially when new games came out. this was the norm back then as new games were pretty expensive since it costed a lot to produce cartridges for SNES/Genesis. lol at kids coveting cartridges like they were gold bars when they got them and running off home to start playing. also, i concur that Deadly Moves aka Power Moves was a totally rubbish and uninspiring SF2-ripoff. blech.
@hubcapsignstop
your avatar leaves little to the imagination when it comes to which old school FG you wanna rep lol. good luck with the “resurrection” dude.
peace out.

Battle Arena Toshiden needs a second chance. The original ps1 games were tons of fun to play back in the day, and I think with some character balancing and minor tweaks to the game mechanics, it could do well as a rival game to soul calibur.
At least, I hope so.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned TMNT: TF yet. Just make a new game with the same system and button setup and get rid of those 100% stun combos and throwing while the enemy is in blockstun and you have a good game.
Last Blade would be great if done properly. Also Psychic Force 2012. I enjoyed Psychic Force even though it was a bit much with its restricted field. Something similar to all these DBZ games take on aerial fighting.
@mrmuffinwaffle
oh yeah, i totally forgot about this title [the SNES release was okay at the time, the Genesis version was terribad] since it featured its own “super meter/desperation moves” which i think was ahead of the arcade ST release to have this feature.
too bad Konami has so much difficulty in making a really decent fighting game over the years it’s retarded to think that they would attempt to make another one at all [oh yes, i’m talking about YOU, Castlevania Judgement. burn in hell!!!]

so many old school fighting game threads popping out of the woodwork lately i decided to bump this back for any body willing to keep the discussion going.
btw, been playing some Samurai Shodown games lately and i’m starting to miss my old Dreamcast [RIP] which i have yet to replace…

I’d absolutely love to see Bloody Roar or Rival Schools get a reboot. Both of them had some serious potential and could be brilliant if rebooted.
@Buffalo
the Bloody Roar series seems to be popular to some players but has yet to be tournament worthy due to overall balance issues it has with pretty much EVERYTHING in the game. would love Rival Schools/Project Justice get a pseudo-SF4-esque treatment [presentation-wise] since the series really has a lot of potential to be great. 3-on-3 team battles with a revamped team-up system would be just the thing. plus a few more additions/tweaks and it’s set.

Damn, I thought I did…must’ve been a different thread. But yeah, bigger cast, more supers, cast chosen from IDW, Archie, Mirage, 2k3 tv series, and no bullshit characters that were created just for the game (Aska). But blockstun throws are a staple, dude. Agree on the touch of death combos, though.
Remembers the first CVS… Oh yeah. Many of the SNK characters were practically MISSING a huge number of their moves, some which were signature moves - things like this in particular piss me off. On topic, I am interested in seeing things like the Fatal Fury and the Darkstalkers series revisited.
