You would expect a group known for being very meticulous about their research in having quantifiable, measurable results would come up with a better way to figure out the best video game franchises/series than some random poll that probably only a small demographic of the video game community even knew about.
This whole list just seems laughable and comes off more like an internet troll trying to fan the flame wars and get some attention for itself.
Ignore the fact that Halo tops the list (w/e…it’s popular enough), but how is it that the only two fighting series even on this list is smash and WWE Smackdown VS Raw. All the while zero capcom or snk games even get an honorable mention…apparently they wanted to make room for runescape sigh.
Hell, I would even bet over 90% of the people on here wouldn’t list a fighting game series as their favorite franchise ever. Even the people that would, the specific series they choose amongst one another would be so fractured none of them would make the list.
List might be shit but they polled their readers. It’s not like they picked and chose. The readers sent in a specific series it sounds like rather than selecting from a list.
Isn’t that the problem, lol? Isn’t guinness records suppose to be beyond opinion and base there data on something substantial? There’s so many things they can look at like overall sales, or year by year comparisons of what sold the best, or something beyond having a small market decide with meaningless polling.
btw…I get that fighting games aren’t really that popular when compared to most games, but if i’m gonna see a wrestling game on this list, I better at least see street fighter, haha.

It’s not a representative sample. The average Guinness reader is much more likely to be in the 30+ demographic. The younger generation doesn’t need to buy the Guinness book to know the size of the biggest pumpkin ever grown, there’s Google for that - or if they just wanna see a picture of that creepy dude with the two foot fingernails or some other freak, yeah, there’s Google for that too.
It might be helpful to think of an analogy - imagine if I asked the SRK forums what their favorite sport was. Since it’s a largely US-based forum, we’re going to get American football in the top three, most likely in the number one spot. Outside of North America, the world simply does not give a shit about American football (one sold-out game in England per year is not called “giving a shit”). People’ll watch the Super Bowl, but that’s the Super Bowl, not football - the World Cup finals do reasonably well in America, but nobody would say soccer is something the average American really gave a shit about. American Football outside of the US (and, if we include Canadian football, Canada) is like KOF outside of Southeast Asia and Brazil. And, since fighting games are much more action-oriented than, say, Pokemon, we’re also going to slant towards the more action-oriented sports. So you end up with football, basketball, hockey, baseball, when the US as a whole is more football, baseball, basketball, poker, NASCAR, wifebeating, alcohol abuse, Law & Order, hockey - and then you turn around and say that football is not just the most popular sport, but the best sport – it’s just fucking stupid, plain and simple.
Science is not decided through a democratic vote, and neither is something like “best”.

Science? What kind of science would you employ to determine something as blatantly subjective as best? Sales? They have a best selling list and records for the best selling within each genre already. Sales don’t tell the entire story anyway. NPD doesn’t account for digital distribution or returned copies. Sales don’t account for wildly popular games like Runescape that are free to play. Don’t account for the frequency that someone plays a game within a series and for how long. I could go on and on.
So cool. SF2 was popular in the early 90’s. How does that translate to individual people choosing Street Fighter as their favorite video game series? I know a bunch of people on FGD like to bullshit and say ST or HF are their favorite to seem “O.G” or “hardcore” but they play other fighting game series more often and probably have more fun doing so. Throw genres that aren’t fighting in the mix and Street Fighter being someone’s favorite franchise all goes to shit.
I’m not saying this list isn’t garbage though. There is probably only 8 of the games one there that I accept as being top 50. I’m just not going to sit here and be like “Baww bawww my game isn’t on a list that changes from year to year.”
