Ah, that’s cool! I never would’ve figured SNK knew it’s F1.
I just noticed this thread. This is a cool thread.
KOF 98 - Japan Street stage - real location.
Just uploaded a clip of SNK staff showing the real location of the King of Fighters 98 street stage. Its and underpass near the SNK head office in Osaka Japan.
Clip is taken from a French documentary. Very interested to hear any translation info on what the SNK guys are saying about the location…

Hon Fu / Li Xiangfei’s Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 stage is based on the China Town gate in Sanfrancisco:

The KOF 94 USA team’s background is set under the Brooklyn Bridge:

The ghetto warzone type setting reminds me of the locations depiction in the movie ‘The Bronx Warriors’:

This KOF 11 stage is set on the London Eye:

where are you guys getting the 3s backgrounds from? the links posted earlier in this thread are now broken.
that KoF11 pic is hilarious because of mr. big.
Well, I’m from Holland and though Kinderdijk is definitely the name of a real place, it would be pretty hard to find six windmills that close together. Especially identical ones.
This is kind of reversing the topic, but I always laughed when I was playing Final Fight 2 and got to the Holland level. Big mountains with snowy peaks? Yeah right!
I’m living in Edinburgh right now, so I might be able to find Cammy’s stage on the castle. I haven’t actually been there yet (tried to go, but it’s pretty expensive).
Cool thread!
That would be cool. See post #36 & #37 on page 2 of this thread.
Will be interesting to see if you can find any other elements of the background there besides the left tower and the buttress ‘bridge’. Like the archway and tower on the right…
I’ve also wondered if the views from the castle in might have directly inspired the scenery in Cammys stage, or wether its just a generic scottish ‘loch’ mountainscape.
Well, apparently this weekend admission to the castle is FREE, so if I don’t have too much of a hangover from my housewarming party tonight and I’m able to push through the probably millions of tourists, children and old people I’ll try to see if I can get some nice pictures.
U guys are awesome. Very interesting thread.
With all these real locations, someone should start developing a new movie.
Maybe a vs. series movie…CVS or something.
The fantastic colour pencil background design sketches for SFA2 that have now been uploaded at the Street Fighter Galleries:
http://www.sfgalleries.net/art/sfa2/backgrounds/
have prompted some new finds. *Does anyone know where these sketches come from? Book - Moot etc.
Adon’s Street Fighter Alpha 2 stage:
’Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon’ a temple complex near the ‘Chaopraya’ (*Chao Phraya) river in Thailand. Part of the greater ‘Ayuthaya Ruins’ where Sagat’s stages are set:

Rose’s Street Fighter Alpha 2 stage:
is the ancient port city of Genoa

Like many others I was confused about the old style sail ship, but Genoa port seems to have quite alot of historical vessles either moored, or docking for special events:
Can anyone make out the name of Ryu’s location?
SF2: I believe the U.S.S.R. was once a real place! I will have to double-check at a library, though. :wgrin:
This thread is awesome. It makes me want to go travelling. Has anyone created a thread yet for characters based on real people? SF and Tekken in particular are rife with them.
It certainly takes some fun out of the thread, but here we go!
“The locations included Angkor Wat, Szechwan, Monument Valley, Chicago, Kyoto, Fiji, Windermere, Venezia, Akropolis, King George Island, and Chiba Marine Stadium”
- from Wikipedia
It definitely says “Suzakujo” but Google coughs up nothing for that. It’s either a typo or a fictional place.
EDIT: I tried a bunch of likely variations and misspellings and I’m still finding nothing.
Either I failed, or it’s not true
Well, I went to the castle today. I got there pretty late, so I could only walk around for like half an hour. I searched all over the place and took some pictures, but it just doesn’t look like her stage. At all. The thing that came closest was the area in front of the castle, that’s like a big bridge and you can see the mountains in the background, but you really have to use your imagination. So… I don’t think Cammy’s stage is based on Edinburgh castle.
Besides, why would it be based on that, if her stage is supposed to be in England? (Oh wait, mountains in Final Fight 2’s Holland stage, never mind)
Here’s an overlooked one.

Check Hokutomaru’s stage.
Real(Times Square)

p.s. I have a hunch that J-Hoon’s stage is in San Francisco, I know for fact that this is one of many “korea towns(Korean business districts outside of Korea)” of the world, because the the stage is marked(top banner reads: “Victorious Kim Jae-Hoon Victory is before your eyes - Kim’s Gym 2nd South Branch - Koreatown)”
Note that the distinctive caf from KOF 95 is in the distant background, where you can also spot 8-pixel tall Iori, Mai, Terry, Ralf, and Clark cosplayers.
Im assuming a bit because Ive never been there in person, but I think the KOF 96 Osaka stages (Athena/Kyo team stages) take place on top of the very same overpass, and (it looks like) the KOF 94 Japan stage takes place under an idealized version of it, making it one of the more random oft-featured stage areas.
Southtown and its successor always has been pretty westcoasty, so this theory is pretty plausible.
A lot of the Garou backgrounds look like things Ive seen in movies (like Freemans stage) but I cant for the life of me remember where. Ugh.
Check it out KOF 98’ street stage in Osaka

The Kof94 Mexico’s stage was a real place. Pao Pao Cafe Garibaldi on Mexico capital city.
No longer exist but was real.
Balrogs Vegas stage, ‘The Golden Nugget’:
Real Location in Vegas:
Its funny, usualy thy change the names slightly for copyright issues, but not here…
Yeah, Harrods of SW1. I’ve been looking at pubs called The Sherlock Holmes, and although there are a few, I haven’t found one that looks identical to the 2I stage.
I’d be inclined to say no on that one. The stage seems a bit more rural, and not like a capital city. And the castle itself is a bit generic. Plus it says England and not Scotland.
They are def based on real towns, but whether they are based on scenes from real streets - you’d need to find the exact camera position… Same thing with Blanka and Urien.
Yeah, that’s used in SF1,along with Great Wall of China and Mount Fuji
Anyway, here’s the main previous thread with lots of real info:

I’d be very interested to know if it was a real distillery in SFIV.
Thanks Richard, I wasn’t aware of the thread from 04, good stuff. Just on the Cammy stage thing, I’m fairly convinced that it is indeed where the ‘inspiration’ came from, take a look at posts 36 & 37 on page 2. In the same way Metro City is clearly NYC. Artistic liscence for sure, but fits the bill better than any other place I’ve come accross.
Btw, are you the Richard who used to post with a Double Dragon 2 avatar? I read quite a few of your old posts if thats the case.
