Rashid General Thread: Desert Storm - second new character

It is a spacing issue you are having. You just need to hit the range where the last whirlwind is active as you EX Spin so it grants you the boosted version which allows actions after it.

Apologies if this is common knowledge but I realized today that you can cancel the first hit of cr.HP into v skill, which leads to a nice frame trap/mixup. If you go for roll->kick it trades with 3f moves and should stuff anything slower than that (although I only tested with ryu). Once you’ve tried this once or twice and have trained them to block, you can go for an empty roll into throw or overhead. If you expect an invincible reversal, you can fly over them with standing v skill and the reversal will whiff (again I only tested this with Ryu) then you can punish with heavy dive kick. I haven’t gotten to try this against any good players yet so I don’t know how effective it will be; I guess it will come down to whether people can react to an empty roll fast enough to punish it.

After playing as Rashid more often; I would prefer to see his EX spinner at 5 frames instead of 8.

I have never found a useful situation to use an empty roll off a normal cancel. They would have to be not paying attention on the other end to miss punishing it.

This might work week 2 but this isn’t a very sound strategy. The roll kick is punishable on block and the empty roll is pretty negative as well. I guess if they’re heavily pressing buttons you can commit to the roll kick once in a blue moon but there are better things to make people sit still.

What do you consider unsafe and gimmicky? Dp after minus 2 attacks? I don’t think lamerboi is above that. I also don’t think it will EVER be gone as a legit tactic. Not in years. I think we will still be doing it 6 years from now on occasion if we are still playing him and this game.

I also just found out that that WWS crossup isn’t a gimmick. It’s just a mixup and it has to be respected by all characters. Doing a perfectly timed st.lk after H WWS or ex WWS xx 2 v skill is at least +3-4 on block because against the standing and blocking training mode dummy ryu I can get out a st.lk that is blocked… With the computer programmed to do a jab on block recovery.

These aren’t gimmicks IMO, they are just good old fashioned mixups. Not so great as to be able to use them all day… But if rashid trains the opponent to expect the ground attack followups then he can go for the air mixups.

I mean, no mixup is completely safe. It’s just whether or not it can be defended against easily if expected.

Rashid has ways to get re offense established which is scary:

One jumpin pokestring does around 40 white damage, into ex WWS into a throw/ch/bait setup if rashids mixups work right here then all of these options basically have plus 40 damage on his combo because of white chip.

If the opponent tried to poke rashid out of ex WWS preemptively…, that sets them up for frame traps.

I LOVE this character… He’s fundamentally sound with good pokes and good anti airs and a good overhead and good DP reversal, good pokestrings, good mixups, a great run/dash…

And then the hamlord shit like his kick specials… Which can be placed in GREAT areas fundamentally speaking.

He even has good damage when you count his burst damage and ex followups.

He has a legit vortex and a fireball that is super spammable easily because it’s hard to jump over. The recovery is fine… I’ve gotten it jumped like 4 times out of 100 on average.

His only suspect attributes are low jab bnb damage (that’s why you use his mixups to get the higher damage stuff) and his slowish walkspeed, in my book.

I could list his technical know how to also be something of a detriment… But a character like this shouldn’t be played by people that want a simple character… Simple characters are beaten in simple ways.

Rashid probably doesn’t have a highly losing matchup either. RIGHT NOW, he’s bad against Nash ryu chun and maybe sim… But give him some time to learn how to ham shit out against sim and how to get his frame traps and fireballs punishes right against chun and ryu and Nash and I think this guy is an actual contender.

I second everything in Dime’s post. All the pieces of Rashid’s game are finally starting to click into place for me. I definitely agree that it’ll take time for matchup-specific stuff to shake out; but if you’re patient, and play correctly once you get in, his offense has the potential to be truly oppressive vs pretty much anyone in the cast. All I know for sure is that I’m having more fun with Rashid than I have with any character since Akuma in 3s.

The one upside of playing a low tier character is actually being able to say you play low tier, which the more I play the more I realize he is.

I’m playing against Laura, I try to do the standard Rashid corner set up, Laura DPs, even though I’m clearly behind her I get teleported back in front of her and eat her DP. They clearly decided to make Laura’s DP hitbox big enough that you couldn’t cross over it.

Meanwhile Laura jumps in on me and is maybe a centimeter behind Rashid’s head and my qcf HP completely whiffs… ok.

Mid screen HP crush counter with Rashid is near impossible to react to in a real match and the only viable follow up is standing HK which is negligible damage and leaves Rashid in a disadvantageous situation (and can also just whiff).

They had to eliminate the possibility of J.MP -> divekick being a mix up tool? Why? Why does he need to stand around for 10 frames when the rest of the cast gets such insane mix up tools.

Similarly, why does he have to wait around for so long after landing with vskill?

V trigger whiffs all the time off cr.MK, garbage range on cr.MK.

Fireball is absolute garbage, and is so easily punishable at high level play.

Can’t cancel off of 3rd hit qcf lp… for some reason.

I find Rashid AA not that great. It is not brainless like Birdie / Cammy / et cetera. I have been over cammy’s head and her AA still hits me from the front.

It is not easy reacting to his crush-counters. I swear I get shit damage unless I know that one move will crush-counter. Nothing annoys me more than spacing out a character and getting almost nothing off it and they hit a max range cr.mp and go full on combo into CA if they have it.

wait you can do stuff after ex mixer? was this possible in the betas?

edit: NM just read its a wall jump

Turns out he isn’t a spacing character. Who knew.

Also @LiangHuBBB its not a walljump. Its just you have to get the tornado activated EX mixer.

LOL! I did that one time on a match but I thought that was some rollback bug or something like this. This is just too flashy.

What are people using to anti-air on reaction? Feels like Ken jumps in on Rashid all day unless you make a hard read

@dukmunky Depends on range, but you either want to do hp mixer, neutral jump mp, mp mixer, or cr mp xx mk wws.

The more I play as Rashid and against other characters all I can think is that Rashid AA is a pile of shit compared to most of the cast.

Pretty much. I was playing with Ken too and I was too comfortable anti airing with his cr.HP, st.MK or shoryukens and with Rashid I was eating some very stupid jump ins.

Cr.mp and ex mixer are fine anti airs. Some of the characters in this game would kill for them.

The whining in this thread is beyond ridiculous.

Rashid’s AA game is top tier compared to Karin’s.

Rashid has situational AAs, but I’m still catching plenty. It’s just not “Birdie’s C.MP” brainless.

Coming from maining Rufus and Cody, I’m perfectly comfortable AAing with Rashid. Just gotta get those followups into my fingers.

Hence why I said most of the cast. 80% of my matches are against the ones with brainless AAs so that is what I am used to seeing. I know which characters have mediocre AA.

I do not know about you guys but reacting to a crush counter cr.fp with follow-up does not happen often for me online. By the time I realise it the follow-up link is too late.

Rashid can AA quite fine. Cr. mp, EX mixer, and mp mixer can all do the job.
