Ranking and You: A Ranking Discussion

Welp, I just got ranked down today. I’m normally not a great player, but seeing my rank go down from 9th Ranger all the way back to Fighter again makes me lose faith in playing. So here’s this, how do you view rankings in games?
Do you think they’re accurate portrayals of people’s skill going into the game?
Or do you disregard them and go straight in?

5th lord and above you can pretty much guarantee they have decent knowledge at this game (meaning they play it like how marvel is made to be played, abuse everything), to that point, unless they have some absurd win record, they’re probably some scrub…or me :slight_smile:

but really, unless it’s like a cosmic lord you’re facing, fuck it and go for the gold

I think that ranking down in this game is kind of silly.

As you rank up you start playing against people closer to your skill level/above it, which makes you lose more, which makes you rank down. Which takes you out of that group that is good enough that you are actually learning things from playing with them.

alot of the time, a better ranking just means their bad habits are more entrenched so you can exploit the more easily. After all, the rankings are based more on participation than skill.

I was ranked down from 9th Lord to Fighter an embarrassing amount of times back in Vanilla. But I knew I deserved it, being new to the fighting genre. I knew that I deserved it and as I got better I eventually made it up to 6th Lord before Ultimate came out.

True, one online win is all it takes, which says nothing especially in a game it is easy to get blown up.
I’m 4th Lord iirc, but I harldy play ranked matches any more. It says nothing, besides dealing with the most absurd and on purpose lag tactics.

I rather play player/lobby matches and actually learn something about a matchup I have problems with than getting 10 ranked wins while using a one-trick pony.
Being able to adapt makes you a better player, not some rank.

Ironically, the higher in rank I got, the worse the players got. Some of the best players I’ve ever played in this game are still the default rank because they never touch ranked mode. All you need to do is play a lot and you’ll eventually rank up. I only bothered ranking up to 3rd lord so I could surpass my old Vanilla rank when I actually cared.

I haven’t bothered to do ranking almost at all in Ultimate, but back in Vanilla I got up to either 4th or 3rd lord, can’t remember. And even then, it was mostly because it was the only way I could get a match in. In any event, I think Capcom put in the ranking system to keep people motivated. After all, it’s more exciting to play if something’s on the line. However, there are some inherent problems with the system. First, the ranks only mean something if the matches are honest. With online lag, rage quitters, and point boosters all being parts of the situation, the ranks ultimately mean nothing, competitively speaking. In general, the best way to maintain your mental health when playing online fighters is to focus on online games as a way to have fun or learn matchups, and not sweat your losses. Keep your pride offline, and your enjoyment and love of the game both on- and offline.

Eventually I’d really like to see a ranking system with just point accumulation, no win/loss records (to deter rage quitting), and no ability to lose points or rank down. I think that would help to nurture a positive online environment where people don’t take losing so seriously.

This is pretty much my thoughts on a players actual rank. That said prior to ultimate coming out winning % was at least a better barometer for player skill but with the ability to reset your rank now not so much. I’ve run into undefeated people who have more consecutive wins than they have wins total. Thanks Capcom.

Smurfs ruin things a lot but honestly, no one gets good by worrying about win % or records. You could lose 20 games in a row but if you learn “I’m doing X wrong with Y character” then those losses are better than any wins you would have gotten by playing Y character the wrong way.
Worrying about rank is pointless for getting better as is, but rank in UMvC3 means literally close to absolutely nothing. I’ve gotten wins I don’t deserve due to lag, cheap tactics, etc and the same goes for people getting wins off of me in similar fashion.

Digest: Rank doesn’t mean crap; just play and learn from losses and you win.
PS: Loss streaks WILL happen. You will always go on win streaks and loss streaks as well, don’t worry much about either of em.

I’m a 7th Scout and find myself getting blown up a lot in ranked by dumb online shit I can’t seem to stop. I don’t mind the rank too much though because I’m Canadian and got dat red and white title, but I one day will try for 6th X to get the trophy. I actually was pretty awful at the game before coming here so my ranked record was like 30 games below .500, but I got better ranked up a bit then stopped at even record. Now I stick to SRK player matches/lobbies, just feels a lot better (obviously).

Oh and I’m not even sure how Ranger/Scout/Lord works, it seemed to change a lot even on the same rank.

Rank dosent mean anything honestly. Ive gotten blown up by 6th lords really quickly and ive demolished some 2nd and 1st lords easily. I’m a 3rd Lord now (for the 3rd time) and im really starting to see the bad habits of some of the top ranked players.

I restarted twice because it got boring playing the same 8 people over and over again. Personally the best rank to be online and have a wide variety of players available is 5th or 4th lord.

Rank doesn’t matter. Toboku-hama and Matu-mskyui are Cosmic/Mighty Lords and are ONLY so because they play all day long, everyday and racked up alot of wins. If you’ve played them, you will know they are not very good and both are pretty derpy

I think I got up to 5th or 6th Lord playing for the trophy to Platinum this game. It was so bad, and the lag was teaching me bad habits. In the end I decided to create a new team of derpy characters I do not main so that I could Platinum the game ASAP without learning bad habits for my actual characters.

I swear someone had posted what the different names meant: Lord, Ranger, Scout, Judge… what happened to that post?

Lord=Stability
Ranger=Basic Offense
Scout=Advanced Offense
Guard=Basic Defense
Judge=Advanced Defense

Participation ranks you up? Wow so why have I been ranking down so much, I should be cosmic lord if rank is determined by participation

Every cosmo lord ive come across so far has been a about 4000-7000 win 1000~ loss Hulk <> Sentinel with absolutely little knowledge of the game outside of abusing lag so no, it means little.

Its also pretty easy to get a higher rank just by farming. Its fun though

depends really if cosmic with a win ratio of 70+ either they are good, only face low level players or D/C a lot some high ranks are actually good others aren’t

I care about rank more than I should. I just became a 4th Lord again after going through 4th Judge and Scout, and finally coming to the decision to drop Magneto from online, especially on PS3. I don’t really play ranked much, with only a fifth of my total playing time being online, and my total number of ranked matches only being 10% of my highest characters usage figure (just to give a rough idea of my playing habits).

Now I don’t really see ranked as anything more than match-up experience. And even I can’t take that to be totally accurately due to the netcode. Though I’ve found XBox live to be significantly better than PS3 (I could actually land flight combos with Magneto consistently), the general lags taken all the fun out of it. I don’t even consider it useful for execution or combo practice when I can land things fine offline, where my tournament matches actually happen.

Rank isn’t a true reflection of anybody’s skill level- some of the best players I know don’t play ranked. If anything, your rank only shows either how good you are in online, or how much you play online.

Heck, theFGTV guys and Joker are/were 5th-6th Lords. And Chris G was a ‘beginner’.
