When other Mika players do F.MP then f.mp, Mika will grab the opponent and push them to the other side of the screen. they will hit the end of the stage and bounce back. Unfortunately when I do it, the bounced back animation only happens if I’m close to the end of the stage. what am I doing wrong? I tried with counter on in training but still only bounce back if i’m near a corner.
The really short version is that when you reset the opponent you get to keep your offensive momentum and dictate the terms of the next interaction.
A reset gives FAR less time for the opponent to think about their next move (as opposed to a knockdown). Cutting the time they have to react to a situation is a serious benefit.
The second reason they’re good is because the opponent can’t vary their timings at all. With a knockdown, the opponent often has access to any or all of the no recovery, quick recovery, and back recovery options. This is therefore a two way guessing game; them guessing what setup you’ll use on them and trying to choose the best option, and you trying to guess what option they’ll pick and using your best setup. A reset is much more of a one-way guessing game - the timing can’t be influenced by the opponent, so there are far fewer variables for you to consider, which greatly favours your offense.
I’m a new player and I suck I main Chun but I would like to learn R.Mika or at least gain enough knowledge about her play style to know if she is right for me.
She’s a lightweight grappler. Lots of dashing, poking, and corner resets. She also has some real issues, like most grapplers in 5, such as weak wake-up.
As someone who main’s R.Mika and is pocketing Chun Li at the moment I’d point out that of the current grapplers, R.Mika plays the most like her (,which is to say not really but there ARE some similarities outside of their ability to kick lol.) R.Mika has good poking tools, and relies on spacing a lot. Most grapplers rely on spacing and have a short jab, but R.Mika’s ranges vary a lot more than Zangief and Laura. Alex also does this but has a lot more slower moves which as a Chun Li would take a LOT more adapting to get through. Like Chun Li she also has a wider tool box for more situations, in exchange her move set is, like Chun Li, a little more reliant on reading your opponent and spacing.
In the end if you like Chun Li because she of her pokes, and want a grappler R.Mika isn’t a bad choice though she has way more tools to work on and requires a lot more reading of your opponent than relying on good buttons. If you like Chun Li for her good buttons and combo ability/v trigger, try Laura if you want a grappler.
Hey guys what normals do you look for when trading against Nash players? he seems to have a lot of safe ones that makes it hard to counter attack unlike most of the cast I think which normals should I look for punishing the most when facing them?
If you mean punishing his OWN normals, there are several ways to do that:
The first thing to keep in mind is that none of his normals are three frames. This means your jab can punish his own jabs. You must be extremely careful with this, however, as his MEDIUM attacks are all 0 on block and therefore completely safe, unlike some of R.Mika’s mediums which can put her at a bit of a disadvantage if the Nash gets jab happy.
The second thing to keep in mind is that a LOT of Nash’s love to zone and love to jump attack or go for cross ups. This means that you’ll want to generally make him uncomfortable on the ground by throwing out throws and poke pressure via hk and shooting peaches (,they can go over his sonic booms bypassing his zoning attempts,) so you can make his air game more predictable and your anti-air that much stronger (wingless airplane, standing medium kick, and lady mika are all good options here.) Alternatively, you can try making him uncomfortable in the air using her jumping medium kick, jump back light punch, and in some cases if he tries to counter jump from too far away heavy kick. And if he doesn’t react to your jumping, almost all your jump ins are going to be safe or push you far away enough that he can’t do anything that isn’t super slow. Be careful with this though, as he has decent anti air/air to air options and this is normally better for conditioning/baiting things out.
The more common Nash’s tend to do a string of attacks that can be ex peach or jab punished depending on what it is (which you can cancel into light peach for a knock down.) More technical Nash’s I have found, tend to try and go for cross ups. Crouching medium punch is a good way to punish that, and is a fairly necessary skill for all match ups honestly. Timing wise you really want to keep Nash at a /little/ distance as If you mean his specials, you either have to block or get something so on reaction that you’d need superb.
To answer the more specific part of your question, his heavy attacks tend to get used in his strings. If you are patient enough to look for them during them, you can jab punish those. Additionally his crouching medium kick is 0 on hit and therefore you shouldn’t be too discouraged to retaliate with a jab or even a throw if you are close enough if you get hit by it.
In reality though, a big advantage of Nash is his movement and his specials. He has great set ups for these due to his speed and dash speed. He specials have great pressure when used correctly as most of them cannot be retaliated against once you start blocking them. These are more so the sorts of things you’ll have to be good against to get a more honest game with Nash. His normals are definitely something to watch out for, but at the same time if your defense is good enough they are not necessarily going to be your biggest threat, especially when he has meter or v trigger ready.
Anyway hope that answered your question at least a bit. Happy monster nashing.
I’m starting to think about trying to learn another character alongside Mika, who I’ll keep as main. Is Alex a good choice for a similar play style? Gief looks too slow
Personally, I don’t think he’s like Mika really. I see Alex as being more like a Bison-style grappler - big buttons, big traps. Gief is certainly closer in archetype to Mika than Alex is.
You should just try him out though. Do his trials, fool around in training mode, do easy survival, then you should at least have an idea of how he works.
The way I describe it to people is Nash and Bison had a kid and went ‘when you grow up your going to be the most grouchy american grappler in the whole wide world.’ A lot of his strategies are similar to them.
My suggestion is mostly to take inventory of what aspects of R.Mika you like the most and then focus on what numbers 2 and 3 are. For example a lot of Juri players do not have their main character right now, and have had to pick ‘second best.’ For me a lot of what I like about Juri is her kicks and her varied attack vectors, so I picked Chun Li since their specials are similar in terms of usage even if her normals are not, but they certainly are closer than most. I also have R.Mika who lets me satiate the part of her that ‘loves corner mix ups and control.’ Others have gone to Rashid, since he doesn’t have to care about his spacing and has a tool for any point, a feature people who played Juri or Cody love. They might also have picked him because he has the most spinny shenanigans.
Zangief has a lot of normals that are similar to R.Mika, but if you do not like the speed, alex and laura are going to be ‘second best’ in terms of normals. If you like the corner mix up stuff more Zangief or Laura are better than alex if you want a second grappler. If you like the set ups more you’ll be better off with laura.
If grappling is second or third in your list of reasons why you like Mika I’d suggest starting working from there. The reason I suggest this is if you focus on the first thing you’ll end up trying to look at your main character too much while not considering the things that really make you tic. You might not consider a character that amplifies your other strengths in a real way and makes your repertoire more complete as a result, too busy focusing on for example command grabs. Necalli and Birdie have a command grab, but they play nothing like R.Mika. But if you like certain things about her, like strong anti air, or her ability to be strong at various spacing levels, you might actually like Necalli, and it might so happen that you can find a happy in between of your favorite thing of playing Mika and your second favorite thing.
Sorry if this rambling got confusing, but I hope it helps ~_~
How do you guys deal with pressure/ closing the gap.
I just fought a Laura player in a set and had difficulty getting her off of me. A lot of my jabs were counter hit, and I really couldn’t get any offense going.
As for getting in, how exactly do you fight characters with better buttons such as Chun li. She has massive range on her normals. I’m trying to figure out a way to get past her fireball, and st.HP without jumping. Other than that Laura had some normals with range that I just couldn’t advance on. Any help would be appreciated.
You have two options when getting in on anyone - regardless of fireballs or good pokes:
[] bulldogging
[] go ham
I’d advise learning both styles as going Marn on someone will work really well if their defense has holes in it and if they let you get away with a lot of jump-ins, great. Bulldogging is difficult to learn if you normally play zoning characters (or characters that can zone). My advice would be to study Fuudo a bit - he has a really good handle on Mika’s neutral tools.
If you’re up against someone like Laura who wants to be on top of you, it’s kind of even. You want to be close, but obviously on your terms. You need to know how she works so you can effectively block until it’s your turn. It’s really that simple. SFV characters don’t generally have much in the way of high-low mix-ups or generic can openers - it’s all about those traps. You just need to know when it’s safe (or safe-ish) to press buttons to take your turn back. Don’t let your opponent steal turns.
Fuudo is on the latest episode of BeasTV, so be sure to check that out for some ideas.
Thanks, I was watching a lot of Marn, and forgot Fuudo played the character as well. Will be studying and practicing against Laura pressure in the meantime.
This is great to hear I am trying to have a secret pocket R.Mika I truly believe she is so underrated. I am now going to look try to find her best bnb’s and look at which pokes are the best.
I want to know more about her weakness.
checked out her combo page and did not see the bnb’s on the first page ?! lol what are her bnb’s
