R.Mika General Thread: She's Stone Cold

Mika is a much more traditonal grappler. I was in doubt, but after using her, I can say that she’s a step closer towards your common grappler than Necalli. Whether or not the faster normals for slower command grabs is a good trade off wasn’t something I really got to test too well.

She’s definitely a traditional grappler in the game, at least Capcom categorized her as “the only true grappler in the game”.

Does she use command grabs in neutral? That’s what true grapplers like Zangief do. If they’re part of a frametrap strike/throw game then she’s not a true grappler

Coming from someone who plays Makoto, a character who has to deal with shitty range on her command grabs all the time and doesn’t have her hand held by the redonkulous range of other character’s command grabs in USF4, I’m ready for R.Mika’s mind games into tick throws.

Isn’t it great? Grappler mains will actually have to play honest now instead of relying on dishonest command grab ranges and abusing butter churning.

Should have played 3S Makoto. Those kara karakusa’s would grab you from outta nowhere. LOL. I don’t like the SFIV rendition of the 3S characters from being a 3S player. They work but they’re just not the same.

Traditional grapplers have plenty of their own problems and are pretty much always mid or lower tier so they have their own struggles too. In general though I notice a lot of SFIV players complain about stuff that really isn’t that bad. I guess that’s a product of not playing any of the older games again.

OK, usually I think of traditional grapple characters as ones with 360 grabs, since it seems those inputs are being removed (no idea why) she doesn’t really appear to me in the same boat as Gief or Hawk. I’ve also seen people talk of her poor command grab range and the fact she’s very combo friendly. A little outward from the grapplers I’m used to seeing tbh. I guess she is closest still compared to the current cast.

Yeah, don’t get me wrong, I understand why her command grab has shit range without kara throwing it. The amount of damage, stun, and potential mix ups you can get off of landing a successful Karakusa in USF4 is ridiculous. More traditional grappler type characters like Gief, Hugo, T.Hawk, their command grabs just do one big chunk of damage instead of putting you into a standing state that allows you a free combo. That being said, Yun’s command throw is compareable in range to traditional grapplers for that same standing state into free combo, so it’s like what the fuck c’mon now.

All I’m saying is that the transition from Makoto, a character with a command grab and dominant normals, to R.Mika, a character with command grabs and dominant normals, will hopefully be pretty smooth for players like me. More traditional grappler players will have to learn how to deal and give up the crutches they’ve been given as big body players.

-Mika’s body slam goes straight down, less likely to have ambiguous cross up situations like with body splash.
-Her command grab range is probably no larger than her regular throw range, whereas big body players are used to that command grab range being twice that distance, not factoring in kara throws.
-Her command grab inputs are HCB inputs, which is the same input type as Makoto’s Karakusa, which can’t be churned like 360 inputs can be. You’ll actually have to do the input in the correct direction to get your command grab to come out instead of spinning indiscriminately, especially in reversal situations.

It’s almost as if SFV is being designed to break people of all the bad habits they developed playing SF4 for 7 years.

I just realized you can have custom songs as background music in the PS4. When SFV comes out, I am so hype to wreck people with Mika to the tune of this song.

Yeah it’s pretty J-Pop-y but considering her image I think it fits, haha.

Or maybe the John Cena theme is a better fit? I can’t even think of any other wrestling themes right now…

Actually…it can lol

I also really need to remember to come back here.

This is the best fit

So it looks like she has no grounded overhead, or am I missing something?

She doesn’t. Not that it is necessary.

It’s not unusual for a grappler to not have an overhead. You suppose setup your opponent to get grabbed.

I know, but trying to think of ways to get V-trigger to hit outside of combos seems limited. Without an overhead or a quick crossup it’s basically just a) get them on defensive by activating, then command grab or b) apply safe but easily guarded pressure. And even then you’d have to activate at close range to do option a. Just trying to see what I’m missing about this.

The V Trigger means you can force a strike/command throw mixup without jump or backdash being an option as your assist will tag them. That’s incredible. Why do you need an overhead at that point?

In one of the videos posted here combofiend used the fear of the V-triggers to land her grab super. That’s very useful. From the Mika trailer you can OTG with the V-trigger after landing a grab.

5’5 is the height of the one who broke my heart. I ha

I was gonna play Never Gonna Get It by En Vogue but that song is godlike.

No, but Zangief doesn’t have one in SF4. She does have a command throw that only works if the opponent is crouching, much like Clark from KOF which is fucking sick.

I’m just glad they added in Daimon to the sf universe with this character. Combos, into grabs. That’s it.

According to the movelist, the move you’re talking about is just a regular throw, not a command grab.

Anyone else glad/relieved with the way Mika was modeled? I know a lot of people were complaining she should be more butch and more muscle but honestly I like the think the way Udon Crew portrayed her in the comics was her best look.

They tweaked some things with V, but I’m glad the game is sticking with a more feminine design and one that remains true to her appearance in Alpha 3.

Then again, Street Fighter isn’t know for masculine-looking females. Even saying Makoto is one is a stretch.
