R.I.P. Ricardo "Dasrik" LaFaurie 10/27/1978 ~ 01-02-2010 (1st post updated)

Didn’t know him, but sure he was one of a kind from all responses…And it’s sad to hear a loss from a fellow gamer…R.I.P Dasrik…

Dasrik i never met you as i live here in the UK but i hope you have found peace, zaza keep your chin up and stay strong.

R.I.P Dasrik, Im sorry I only just found out about this since even tho we been on eachothers friendlist for alot of years, I dont know the rest of Ur cirlce and rarely visit General Discussion. Thanks for all the tips and everything you shared over the years. Too young, too soon, R.I.P

Damn, Das. Not what I expected to see upon returning here today. This is very disheartening. I hadn’t talked to Dasrik in quite a while, but we had many great convo’s back in the old days. R.I.P, man. You’ll be greatly missed.

Rest in peace, Dasrik. I haven’t been checking SRK in awhile, and haven’t been on IRC in even longer. I’m sad to hear we lost another great guy of the community, and someone who was always cool to talk to. Wish I could have sent my condolences sooner…

I knew Dasrik as a different name on a different website. 10 years ago, I hung out with him for about a year on Dalnet IRC. There was a falling out between us and a girl he knew there, and we fled for our sanity.

I stopped logging onto Dalnet cause frankly, that network is full of nutjobs. He contacted me on EFNet, but I was working 10-14 hour days at a warehouse at the time, using free Netzero dialup, and… He tried to get me to enter #capcom, and I did for a while, but a HDD crash and generally being exhausted stopped that. It never hit me that he was still on EFNet all this time.

I’ve been on EFNet 24x7 for 10 years.

10 years, and I could have been talking with him the entire time.

I kept seeing him on another forum we both frequented. I never really got in touch with him, was going through college and several jobs that drained me dry of everything I had left. Right after college was tech support, and it’s been tech support ever since then. How many other friends from IRC and AIM and Forums have I lost touch with that are just… gone now? Gone gone?

2 years ago, he saw me on Wikipedia and said hi, and emailed me. He didn’t reply to my email, and I let it go. I always intended to go back and start talking with him again.

He had a great life online. He was an administrator on the YuGiOh wikia, where he almost hit 10,000 edits over the past 4 years. He was a prolific writer, and a frequent editor of Wikipedia and TVTropes.

I keep praying that this is some sort of hoax, that this is just him being too embarrassed to admit that he faked his own death, that he’s really just sitting back trying to figure out a way to return gracefully… but… there’s no way.

Make sure you don’t hesitate to take care of your friends, everyone, cause you won’t get a second chance. Not now, not ever.

Godspeed Rick. I’ll see you in the next life – and hopefully by then you’ll have forgiven me for not being a good enough friend in this one.

I only knew him for a year, but I considered him a great friend, and opponent.

He is known as Jujube to DME, Danny Lillithborne to others. He was a strategical genius, and I enjoyed pitting my mental brawn against his, or teaming up for a tag. No preparation for a tournament with a new deck was complete without challenging him. Depending on the result, I knew how I would fare, and how the tournament would end. Often, when it came to down to us, he would win inevitably. Few could match his caliber. No need to cheat, no need to lie. He reigned victorious in the end.

He will be missed by all who knew him, even the few who only were online for mere seconds before being banned.

So long, and farewell, Ricardo LaFaurie. May we meet again someday.

The Legend of Guardias- Toa Sorano

Dude wtf happened? I learned it today… I didn’t know him in personal but we used to chat on the net… I am really sorry abt it… Rip

There is more information earlier in the thread from his brother and others.

The short story is, fate conspired to make Rick late to an important medical appointment. In route, he stopped breathing as a complication of his medical conditions, and he never woke back up.

I do not know for sure, but I seem to remember him saying he had Cystinosis. He created the article on Wikipedia for it, it’s a very rare genetic disease, and in the last months, he was getting dialysis every other day – and kidney failure is a symptom of advanced Cystinosis.

I wish I had known. I would have had myself tested for a Kidney donor match. I think most of us would have.

One of his friends offered. He told her no.

It’s not fair.

Many, many people knew him online. Only the Shoryuken forums knew about this until 3 days ago, when a good friend of his found out by (I believe) reading about it on Wikipedia. She let us know over at an online fiction community that all 3 of us were a part of.

I’ve spent the last 4 days letting others know by linking to this thread, so if everyone sees new members posting in this thread, please forgive me.

In the end I fear we’ll never be able to let everyone know who knew him. He was… amazingly prolific online. He was big in the card game community, in several online fiction communities, the anime and manga community (he had over 4000 posts on Narutofan.com) and an absurd number of Wiki websites. We were all lucky to have been a part of his life.

Edit:

According to Wikipedia, Dasrik’s name where I knew him, Blankpage, name came from a Smashing Pumpkins song, “Blank Page”:

“blankpage was all the rage
never meant to say anything
In bed, I was half dead
Tired of dreaming of rest…”

http://www.lyricsfreak.com/s/smashing+pumpkins/blank+page_20126507.html

It is the most haunting song I have heard in my life, and the fact that Dasrik named himself after that… I can’t imagine the feelings going through his head these last 10 years.

Edit2:

Some of last words he posted on the forum we hung out on, on the morning of December 26th… about 12 hours before the trip:

*A bit late, but Merry Xmas. I’m back from fighting monsters with Santa Christ and Mr. T. We beat 'em, but one of the monsters gave me the flu.

I am nevertheless filled with the desire to bless myself for having the opportunity to know all of you. And of course I bless you all too.

Peace on Earth and good will to all.*

One last thing, while I am thinking about it.

Please, PLEASE become an organ donor. It is very simple to sign up for, you do it when you get your driver’s licence. Or you can do it here: http://www.organdonor.gov/donor/index.htm

You can even donate a Kidney while you are still alive:
https://www.yesidaho.org/content/livingdonation

Each person who becomes an organ donor can save up to 8 people, and improve the lives of countless others. It is literally one of the most selfless acts of charity and kindness you can do on this Earth.

In the last month of his life, possibly longer, I don’t know the specifics, Rick was on a list for a kidney transplant. We’ll never know if more donors in the system would have found him a kidney in time. We’ll never know if someone on the wikis and forums he was a member of could have been a live donor match for him. Friends offered to be checked, he refused.

What I do know is that by being organ donors, we can save other people who are in the same situation as Rick.

Honor Rick’s memory with me. Become an organ donor today.

thank you

Do any of you guys know of any tribute to my brother??

I am unaware of any. One of his friends was sending Pinwheels to his grave using the graveyard’s website thing. She said they were Dasrik’s favorite flower, due to them growing strong against the wind.

I’ve just learned that dasrik passed away months ago. I’m so sorry for not being around as much as I used to be. I remember him from NEC '01.

My sincere condolences to his family. He was a good man & a cool player.
