R.I.P. Ricardo "Dasrik" LaFaurie 10/27/1978 ~ 01-02-2010 (1st post updated)

Double post

I would like to say thank you to everyone for the enormous support to the Lafaurie family. Jose hasn’t really had a chance to read through a majority of this thread but he sounded very relieved about some of the positive and supportive comments everyone is making in this thread. I’ve actually refrained from adding my two cents in here because i’m still a bit stunned in all of this. When i first received the call, i was almost speechless and i knew about the situation a day prior. I had to soak in the information a bit before it actually sunk in.

Rick and Jose were the catalyst in bringing out the gamers out of the woodwork in the IE (other than Fuson and MOVAL). We went from a bunch of dudes that randomly see each other at bowling alleys, malls and schools. Then, we all took the time to get to know one another and started hanging out and playing casual matches. I remember when there would be some weeks where we would gather every other day and play video games for hours. We spent entire weekends in almost isolation with a few setups, just playing a variety of video games. Majority of us were broke as hell then and would only eat at places with a dollar menu or even coupons and such. During the times we had some money, we would venture off to SHGL and other arcades around SoCal. Our nights would usually end up at the 24 hour Albertos over by Tyler mall and we would just sit there, enjoy our food and the company. We were even able to organize tournaments at UCR where people would actually drive out of their way to come out and support what we were trying to establish. We considered these events a sucess, since we were able to draw high level competition to this area and there isn’t really much else to do around here.

Over a matter of months, we were a bunch of guys who were rivals amongst each other to becoming a team of individuals that worked together. We rooted and cheered each other on in matches and offered advance and strategies. We traveled to events and groups and had the mentality of us against the world. Yes, there was some type of argument or dispute here and there but we continue to grind away playing til we are playing just be senses and reaction. I considered Rick as a comrade. We were all aware of his health issues, but that didn’t matter. I saw him more as another competitor that was trying to take away my playing time. As they say, you lose, you get off the set and wait in the back of the line. There was always that mutual respect for Rick since no one took his skills lightly and he never asked anyone to do so. So as I’m writing this, I am deeply saddened that I lost a fierce competitor in my life, an alley with an abundance amount of knowledge and a genuine guy with a unique personality that is irreplaceable.

This really came as a surprise to me. Although I knew he was sick, he always had a great spirit. He was a really cool guy.

aww man =[

Wow, I can’t believe it.

Although I never met him in person, I remember Dasrik’s posting as long as I’ve been on SRK.
He was one of my very favorite posters, just because of his honesty and spirit.

A true SRK champion who will be missed. RIP.

RIP Dasirk, I’ve only met him a few times when I went to evolutions but they were all funny moments. Farewell my fellow SRK brethren…

i met Rick at James Games. i always wanted to meet the guy. he was a legend in my eyes when i was a weeeee’lil marvel scrub. he was so humble, so funny and witty, overall a great guy to have around. even tho i was only able to hang out with him a few times i will miss him.

he tought me a lot, not just blackheart and marvel nonsense, he tought me a lot about life. tought me not to worry so much about the little things you have no control over, to enjoy life to the fullest cuz you never know when its gonna end.

this man was a survivor, he wouldnt want us to be sad. till we meet again

i’ll always remember you bro

My condolences.

As an employee of Loma Linda Medical Center I’m glad to hear that he enjoyed our service, and I’m sorry more couldn’t be done.

Though I didn’t know him personally, I do remember him well as a poster here. Very sorry to hear it.

Dasrik… As soon as I saw his screen name, my blood started to boil…

Never have a ever met a more die hard stubborn guy when it came to opinions on fighting games. Many a debate between that one and I. Were talking in the #capcom, ICQ, Marvel vs Capcom (PART ONE), golf land AND Beach and Warner days.

He will definitely be missed by myself and several others. My prayers go out to his family and loved ones, especially his brother.

With his passing comes a reminder of the passing of an era and time that has seemingly slipped through our fingers. Days of new forums, new games, new arcades, new friends, and a new community. Dasrik was certainly a cornerstone in the foundation of this online community by being the mover and shaker that he was. Many people join this community be it by internet or in person at a arcade/tournament everyday, but there is a special few number of people that remember seeing and experiencing its origins, its creation… it’s birth.
Dasrik was definitely a part of that select company… And his contribution to it was part of what made it what it was. A truly unique and special personality has passed… sadly… so has a truly unique and special time.
He will be in the thoughts of everyone that had the pleasure to know him, read his posts, debate with him and of course… go a few rounds with him.

May You Rest In Peace,

Erik Perez

Is there a way for someone to post up photos from the wake/funeral today. You know, if it’s not being disrespectful and such. It’s just not easy for me to go attend a funeral all the way across the country. I think many others feel the same.

Just wanted to pay my respects to friends and family. He will be missed. R.I.P. son.

I only knew Dasrik from these forums, but he seemed like a really cool guy. A tragic loss. R.I.P.

No Dr. B quote this time.

It’s always more personal when a name you recognised passes away. I swear i saw one of his posts in the Naruto thread around a month ago. I remember he tried to analyze my dreams on IRC once - i said it was all bullshit and he was just trying to make himself sound intelligent. He said it doens’t matter and It was up to me if i took on board what he thought.

I also had sympathy for him due to his condition. It kinda brings it home about how petty your own difficulties are when compared to someone who is terminally ill, or needs regular treatment just to survive. At least he is free now, just like he always wanted.

RIP bro.

R.I.P.

I never met him but in his posts he always seemed so serious to me, haha. I always just chalked it up to the emotional burden of terminal illness.

It’s neat to hear that he was actually a light-hearted person, and I’m glad that he had happiness in his life!

Not going to be able to make it to the service. Getting held up down here. Whoever’s going who sees this, make sure you pass my respects along to the family and especially Jose. Thinking of you today.

I only met Das a few times when the whole SHGL crew would raid the local Norms at 2 in the morning. He was quiet. Very quiet.

Definitely at odds with the personality that i chatted, argued, and had rather deep discussion with online.

He was a part of what made the SHGL crowd a group of people that I will remember with love for the rest of my life.

I am so sorry to hear that Das is gone forever.
My prayers and thoughts go out to his family.

Das, your sarcastic wit and intelligent presence will be missed.

I’ve only met Dasrik once and that was briefly. Regardless, he was someone that I chatted with here often and he will be missed.

Rest in Peace.

Man a great player and a cool ass person he well be missed
