Questions about some things Nuki does

Im sure Ive seen other chuns do this, but I say Nuki because hes the only one I watch closely, so I notice it more. During some matches against like kens, Nuki will step back some times and will build a lil meter with standing strong and he will sometimes throw out jabs between those. I have an idea why he does this, but Im not sure 100%. Another case is in chun mirrors; when he is in a crouching forward battle with another chun, he will ocasionally throw out crouching shorts in between the c.mk’s. Ideas why for both of these? I ask you veterans, Ive played 3S casually for years, but within the last few months Ive actually been wanting to improve and progress my game, so I need to figure out why certain things are being done here and there. Thanks in advance.

I imagine the c.lk in between c.mk is to bait the other chun to try to whiff punish a c.mk with hp. Does he inch forward at all after the c.lk’s?

If the jabs between the mp’s are low then I’d imagine they are to catch the startup of sweep being using to punish a whiff mp.

I’m not a chun main so these are just guesses

Ill check to see if hes moving forward next time i watch him. As for the jabs, they are standing jabs between the st. strongs.

I imagine he’s trying to bait the opponent into dashing in after the MP so he can catch them with LP, then chain into cr.LP xx SA2. I’ve seen Nuki combo that at least a couple times, so that’s one possibility. Might be the same case with cr.LK, only he’s using that move to bait low pokes and catch people with cr.MK.

yeah, I figured something similar to adding the jabs between the mps, to catch someone trying to jump in.

at 12:56 begins the mirror with machobanana. that match has alot of what I was talking about with the crouching shorts.

Yeah, he managed to catch Macho Banana’s HP from that. Nuki was in a really good position spacing-wise to catch almost anything with cr.MK.

I notice when he whiffs throws he’ll cover it with whatever normal(hakkei sometimes) to tag them if they respond with a throw or whatever late. This got me wondering last nite while watching footage, if perhaps some of these whiffs are intentional…but i dont recall him tagging them and then canceling into super…make me wonder these may be genuine whiffs and hes just covering himself. Your opinion? I do this myself, but its just to cover my whiffed kara usually, never dabbled with intentionally whiffing throws, tho i will bait their throws sometimes. Trying to understand some of the higher level mindgames here.

They could possibly be intentional, just as part of testing the opponent’s reactions. There aren’t many players out there who can immediately react to a whiffed throw outside of some preset strategy, like the Shoto backdash->cr.MK. You’d have to be somebody like TM to be able to catch those on time.

Alright my scrub stuff for online “more throw range” Uriens wasn’t completely stupid! It confused a guy in comments to think we’re on megalag input GGPO delay. But everybody likes up close throw… on their wakeup. Especially Urien’s puroresu sit down powerbomb moves.
