I’m pleased with the way my sticks comes out after I’ve painted them, BUT they still miss that nice shine I see on many sticks.
So my question is this, can anyone give me some tips on techniques and products used to get a nice shiny surface?
Tutorials would be highly appreciated. Looking forward for some kickass advices
I haven’t done a finish on a stick yet, but here’s how I got the nice finish on my new table:
Step 1: Sand off any old finish, and make the surface nice and rough.
Step 2: Apply a coat of finish and let it completely dry.
Step 3: Sand with ~180 grit sandpaper.
Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3, reducing the grit of the sandpaper by a reasonable amount each time (depending on what you have on hand or can get). I did 180 to 240 to 400 to 600, and did the 600…iirc 3 times. It looks pretty good, it probably could be better but it’s more work and I wanted it done in a couple days.
Sanding between coats is important for a smooth finish. However the final coat can still be polished further. I use several layers of a lacquerer top coat wet sanding in between with 400 or 600 grit. On the last coat I will go up to the 1000 and 2000 wet sanding. Then finally use an automotive rubbing and polishing compound to get that showroom mirror finish.
As you see it can take a lot of work if you want mirror perfect. A shortcut I use from time to time is go straight to the rubbing compound. I don’t get mirror perfect but it really shines.
