Sorry if this has been asked before, I tried to check but now with the new MK branded sticks coming out my searches on my question were returning mostly things about the MK9 stick and the new MK-themed faceplate for the TE stick.
I have always liked MK but never really got into it while it was in arcades (I was seven when MK2 hit arcades) and so I never really played it with an arcade stick layout.
MK9 looks really interesting and I want to jump in and learn this one but I want to ask if playing the game on a “regular” six/eight button layout would work? I have a Madcatz TE for the 360 and I do want to buy the game but with grad school I don’t really have the extra cash at the moment to buy another stick for one game (Maybe in the future, but not right now at least). I also don’t want to mod my TE since I play other games with it and would rather not have to mod it back and forth.
Are there players who use six/eight button arcade sticks to play MK games? I realize things like block buttons and run buttons make it different than playing games I’m more familiar with. What layout do those players use?
Would I be better served just to learn to play on pad if I can’t get a MK styled stick immediately?
Why I like this setup:
-Throws are index and thumb, easy and quick
-Block button is under my ring finger at all times, very easy to press whenever I need it.
Though I might end up trying something like
FP BP BL Tag
FK BK X X
or
FP BP BL Tag
FK BK BL X
if you can map something to multiple buttons.
Yes, doing a QCF covers a :d::f: command. Though if you want to get serious with MK you probably want to practice out the curve so you can just go straight from 2 to 6.
I’ve been playing the demo just using the default setting;
FP BP
FK BK BL
It took a while to get used to, but I think it’s more to do with the game feeling so different from other 2D fighters than any issues with the button layout. Once I started getting the hang of things I thought it felt fine. I rest my pinky on the block button, leaving the rest of my fingers free to use the rest of the buttons. Two leftmost buttons for throws, and bottom three for X-rays. I was thinking of putting Block on the top right button as it’s a more familiar setup for 5-button games like HNK or KOF11, but it makes X-rays pretty awkward to pull off, and having Block next to the kicks didn’t seem to take all that much getting used to.
So the TLDR version: Default controls seem fine to me.
have not posted in the Mk thread or anything like that but i found a decent layout that me and a couple of friends found for this game. Its a little bit of a street fighter lay out but being able to hit all three buttons in the bottom for a xray is pretty sweet
It’s just a matter of getting used to something. I’ve been playing UMK3 with SF button layout sticks (cabinet and fightsticks) since forever. I can play on original layout, just not nearly as good/fast. If you’re used to sf layout and want to learn the game, go for it. Most people put block on “strong” and run on “forward” buttons respectively. Same for mk9 I guess. block and…what’s the other button mk uses?
I can’t figure out a better way to do it. You don’t need throw and tag is useless in the demo. This way I can do an x-ray combo by essentially a focus attack.
But I preordered the TE the day after it was announced so I know I’ll be using that soon enough.
