Question about going online with XBOX 360?

Ok, I’m not a technical savvy person, nor do I go online with games, but I know to get the most out of it you HAVE to go online nowadays. So here’s a question, I have Optimum Online for internet/phone/cable. My cable modem is right next to my computer (not close to the tv at all). I want to connect my XBOX 360 (when I buy it) to the tv. The tv has a cable line so how do I go online? Do I have to buy an additional cable modem, or can I just get a splicer, connect the wire to the splicer, and then connect one cable wire to the tv and one to the XBOX? Can someone help cause I don’t have a clue. If you have a certain item in mind please give me the exact name so I don’t end up buying a paper shredder by mistake.

Thanks.

You don’t mess with the TV cable, it just goes into your ISP’s modem. You will need a router. You connect the LAN cable from you ISP’s modem to the router in a slot named “LAN”

It doensn’t matter if you get a wireless router or a wired one. You will need an adapter for the 360 if you want wireless, so i will assume you will just use a wired connection using a network cable. There are usually 4 slots that are numbered for whatever sources you want to use. Plug your PC into 1 of the slots(#1 for example) in the router and plug the 360 into a different slot (slot #2).

The router basically splits your modem signal. If you won’t be going online with your PC while playing you can just connect the modem dirctly into the 360 so you wouldn’t need a router (but it’s too much of a hassel to plug in and out of the PC in order to play xbox live). Hope that helps

I would also recommend going with a router that is listed as Xbox Live compatible… I think there’s a list on xbox.com or somewhere. That, or a router that allows you to completely turn its firewall off (they usually don’t). This’ll help you get the best possible connection.

There is a problem though, the computer modem (cable) is all the way across the room and won’t reach near the television. My computer is an old piece of shit, so we don’t have that wireless technology. Do I have to get another cable modem from my ISP, hook that up to the cable line (the one going to the television) and then run one wire to the XBOX and one to the television?

No, that won’t work. You can only have one modem on that line, and if you want to use 2 devices with it, you’ll have to pony up for a router. They range in price from $40-80 for a decent one, if I remember correctly.

If the computer and 360 are far away, your 2 options are:

1-run a long ethernet cable from the router to the 360 (cheapest solution)

2-Buy a wireless router. You could also buy a wireless card for your computer (they can all use them) for around $30, but wireless routers usually have 4 ethernet ports on the back. So you can just plug your computer directly into the router, while still connecting wireless with your 360.

Now, to use the 360 in a wireless fashion, you could buy the expensive official wireless adapter, or get a wireless ethernet bridge. I believe they run $30-50 if you look around.
