Punishing RYU/Ken's Spin Kick?

In Vanilla I recall RYU/Ken’s spin kick being a free grab off block, but for some reason, more often now my throw is teched, or I eat a DP. (mostly EX with RYU) WTFH man? So after a number of matches of unsuccessful throws and DP counters. I tried mashing LP, and that always ends up in a trade. This behooves me. Why am I always getting beat? What is the proper way to punish? Don’t tell me to just block because for some reason every time I simply block, I get grabbed, but miraculously every time I try to grab I eat a DP like something pops up on my opponents screen that tells them what I’m about to do! It’s not a terribly big issue for me, but it’s something I need a explanation to.

If they are performing the tatsu far enough away from you most crouching attacks will hit them out of it. If you are forced to block then the best option would be to crouch block and try teching a throw if you see it coming with the crouch tech option select. Just wait a slight moment to try to react to what they are doing. If you do nothing and just block the worst that will happen is you will eat a throw, which compared to eating an SRK is much better of an option.

Are you playing online? The input lag could be throwing off your punishes on the hurricane kicks. I know that you can punish Ken’s hurricane kicks on block, but not Ryu’s (with the exception of the LK version), since his leave him at either -2 or -1 on block. If you’re mashing on jab after blocking it, you should be getting a CH in a offline situation if they are also doing the same.

Try recording each shoto performing a different strength hurricane kick followed by jumping, blocking, jabbing, or DPing to find the best punishes for your character.

That’s part of your problem. They generally are not a free grab off block. Check the frame data.

The best thing you can do is duck them so you aren’t put in block stun.

According to the frame data(for Ken) on block even the EX version is -3 which would be enough time for a throw as a punish but, online I always eat a firebreathing shoryuken anyway.

If the frame data is saying one thing then it must be because of online lag then.

If I see it coming from far enough away, I just c.hp them. It’s safe, I can just block when they hit the ground, if I do it right they can’t even grab. Most of the time if they’re dumb enough to do tatsu that far enough, they SRK once they hit the ground.

Hmmm… Well then it must be online lag. I can’t really compare to offline, because I don’t play anyone that’s good offline. Like I said, I’ve always gotten a free grab unless I was late, but now I’m getting beat, so I’m confused as to if I actually have the advantage off block. For the record I don’t understand frame data, but then again, I haven’t seen a thread that fully explains it either.

You’re trying to punish tatsus? Its not a punish situation if you get caught in the block stun, its a 50/50 situation at the end. They all have different recovery frames but its usually between 0 - 1 + frame advantage for blocker. What you should be doing if you see them do a random tatsu from far enough away is knocking them out with a raw ultra or if they are too close you use a special for damage or normal to get a reset. Your best bet is to crouch tech, preferably a split second later then you think so you don’t get dp’d.

They were just screwing up. You don’t get a free (normal) grab off a blocked mk/hk tatsu. You never did.

No, you’re right. I was thinking off hit with Ken.

They made it so Ken is in a 50/50 situation on hit, but Ryu on block.

On hit for HK and LK tatsu, ken is at -1. On HIT. Sucks cause if I get a hit on Zangief or T Hawk, they can Ultra me. On EX tatsu, how ever, we’re at like +2 or something, not too sure about it to be honest, I just know I’m safe to use it on Zangief and T Hawk

Tatsu on hit with Ken is not safe against any of the grab ultras (reversal turns them into 0+1 or something). If Ryu/Ken is doing tatsu right in front of you hold down back and if you get a kick to whiff then you can punish with something while crouching. As soon as they land they can’t be punished iirc.

Incorrect. If a move leaves you at -3 (or is it -4?) on block, you can’t tech their throw.

But you have 7 frames after the throw hits to tech.

I know for a fact you can’t tech a throw if you get thrown during recovery.

It was one of the first questions I had when I started playing SF4 and I tested it.
