Which would you prefer: a consolidated thread for all shootings or a thread for the smaller ones while this one goes on about other things? Oh that’s right. Instead of having a clusterfuck of threads inside of GD, I can just post the news here so that we may discuss the issues of public shootings, the particulars of it and how they relate to gun control. I assure you that as the gun control issue becomes bigger, none of this shootings will be “pointless.”

Way to put words into my mouth. I don’t encourage news threads to be littered all over GD, like you’re implying. Why would anyone want that? Don’t be a smart ass when what I had to say did actually have some merit to it. How is what I said in regards to a small shooting (no reported deaths, mind you) not being a mass shooting untrue? Am I wrong about this in any way?
If the thread needs to be about public shootings and gun control discussion, the title should be reflected as such. Maybe I’m just nitpicking, or it just seems that reporting every gun related incident that happens in America is overkill. You assure us that every shooting won’t be “pointless” as gun control becomes a bigger issue? Maybe, but this isn’t the first time something bad happens followed by talks of gun control… followed by no real action.
I mean, I could report every reported gun related crime that happens in California (Stockton is great for those, although recently has been a decline), but for all intents and purposes of this thread, is it not overkill?

The thing about every shooting that happens from now on is that its going to add layers to the debate. First we have the aurora shooting who appeared to be completely drugged up, then we have Lanza who is also drugged up and now in Arizona we have an somewhat older white person going into an office and losing their shit. Looking at what these shooters and how they acquired their guns had in common may lead to more sensible gun control. Just dismissing them doesn’t help anybody.
Shootings in Stockton, as well as Puerto Rico (PR had and still has a lot of gun related crime because of all the drugs and a lot of innocent bystanders shot and killed because of them) are different situations to that of the public shooters. Could be that we should be looking at drug laws and black market trafficking and how they relate to the gun problem. If we didn’t have a lot of gang violence, would our perception of guns still be the same? I don’t think so. Not related to mass shooters but the gun control for one affects the other.

On the topic of gun control (but not exactly public shootings), happened to be watching the news today and a story came up about Chicago’s homicide problems. Chicago also happens to have some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, and this is including handguns. I’m not sure if Chicago has been brought up in the thread before, but it probably has (I apologize if it has and this is more of the same).

Ctrl + F and search for “Chicago”. Some interesting notes: Chicago homicides commited with handguns is up 40% AFTER the gun control law. In 05, 96% of firearm related murders were done with handguns.

Chicago already up to 40 deaths this year. I can’t seem to find how many were done with guns, however.
