Psp Vita, Worth it or worthless?

Slimmer, smaller improved design? Yes. The screen size needs to remain though.

Prior to seeing one in person i was always satisfied with my PSP display, at 4.3" its the largest of any handheld system afterall. Then i saw a demo Vita at a Wal-mart…niiiiiiiiice!!!

I’d also thought the larger screen might make the unit needlessly big, but the Vita is still reasonably compact. Not much larger than PSP.

waiting for monster hunter. but knowing capcom’s rap sheet, thats never gonna come to merica soooooooo im probly never gonna get a vita =(

I want one for Uncharted, but the cons seem to outweight the pros as far as the Vita is concerned. The 3G can go die in a fire.

I’ll just wait for Super PSP Vita II: Turbo instead. I’m sure they’ll fix the battery span at the very least and maybe a $50 price drop by the holidays or something.

it would be worth it big times if they would add a video out so you can play on the big screen at home. till that is not available I’d say only get it if you have neither a PSP nor a smart phone.

No video out? Really? Thats kinda weird. I could understand PSP-1000 not having it because it was their first entry model in the handheld market…

I’ll bet they’re saving that little feature for the Vita Slim.

Edit: The vita screen is so luscious and huge, why would you want to play on a Tv anyway?

I have a psp but I use it exclusively to play movies and listen to music. I only played a handful psp games but still I use it almost on a daily base, so it was worth it. however, the Vita would bring finally adequate games that are worth playing (soon at least). So I’d love to play some future games on it, but mostly at home because when I simply want to enjoy the game without being forced to stop playing every 10 minutes (when traveling by bus / subway etc). that said, it’s way more enjoyable to play on my 40 inch full hdtv on my couch / bed at home with a 5.1 system and a ps3 controller then on the vita display.

they left the feature out to FORCE you to get you into the “ps3 / vita” cross thing where you can switch systems on the fly for SOME games. I’m pretty sure that they also have already a video output solution but simply don’t want to release a cable or the function that you can play on your tv via your ps3. it’s simply greed. as you pointed out the psp slim and onwards had this feature, it wouldn’t make sense to remove it for no reason.

so far I’d use the vita for video/music exclusively as well, but why should I spend money on it while I have my psp that has exactly the same features? the vita doesn’t even has a new video codec to work with, so you’re enforced to convert all files… AGAIN. that’s why I’d advise a vita only if you don’t have a PSP yet. there is no deal breaking game out yet that is worth to get the system for.

You mean a ps3?

no i don’t. learn to read.

Keep in mind the Vita video is 32-bit color, 960 × 544 qHD @ 220 ppi

that qHD means Quarter HD or Quarter High Definition. it is one quarter the resolution needs to be to be considered HD. HD is 720
Meaning if a future Vita model has a video out it need some serious scaling to adjust for resolution

All we know the Vita’s video on a 26" TV screen would look like shit

Look the system only came out his February, only 2 months ago, were not going to have a Slim anything for the Vita for a long while.
Most of the systems size is in the with not the thickness of the system.

Perhaps you should include the PS3 in that statement.

The PS Vita isn’t built or designed they way you go about designing a handheld.
The engineers at sony went about designing the Vita like if it was a home console. Then decided with that specs how to make the thing work as a portable and not have another Sega Game Gear.
Check the sys specs I posted above. The Vita blows the PSP out of the water.
Its not like comparing the PS2 to the PS3, this is like comparing the PS1 to the PS3.
Look at the closes competion, the 3DS 800 Mhz. The Vita 2Ghz Quad core.
It has double the sys ram of the PS3, in some ways the Vita is more powerful than the PS3.
In my opinion the Vita is more of a powerful gaming device than the Xbox 360 ever was.

As for the Vita’s video play back, Sony taking a step back from the movie play back as they felt pushing movies on the PSP only hurt the PSP. its too easy for Sony to later add Codex when needed. Also the Vita does support nextflix and other media services.

I used to own a full-screen adapter(component) for the PSP, and On a 19" HD-TV despite the games being low-res, they still looked pretty nice. It was not a pixelized nightmare believe it or not lol.

Same goes for my friend’s 26" 720p Tv when we tried it on his.

So i’m sure the Vita’s signal would look good too. Not great, but good.

I personally wouldn’t get a PS Vita yet. It is indeed a good system but at the moment the game library just isn’t large enough. It’s probably a better idea to purchase a PS Vita when more games come out and/or there is a sale/price drop on the PS Vita. (If I knew I could have bought a 3DS on sale for $120 with an additional $20 mail in rebate, I would have definitely held out on the purchase; as I have only started to play my 3DS frequently after the release of Kid Icarus Uprising).

The main reason you should be purchasing a GAMING console is for the GAMES. If there isn’t a decent library of games, your console will just collect dust. (I’ve had this happen when I bought my PSP early and my 3DS early)

Entirely 100% true.

I don’t think this is 100% true all the time, though. As long as there’s at least that ONE game that’ll get you coming back, you won’t need an actual library of games.
I got a PS Vita on launch day, along with UMvC3 and Virtua Tennis 4. I don’t foresee any other game that I need on it until SFxT comes out. Similarly, I got a 3DS on its launch day, and all I really had for it for the first 6 months was SSF4. Which was perfectly fine with me, and I use both portables pretty much daily.

I think from a tournament player perspective, its almost mandatory if your game is supported on there.

especially for marvel, you get portable marvel. Even if the port may not be 100% accurate, you still get to practice parts of the game on the go. Its never been like that before EVER for our community. Whats even cooler is that you can warm up on marvel if you know you’re up in like 10mins @ a big tourney so you don’t jump into the match cold as most players do so owning one actually provides a small tournament advantage.

I think its only a matter of time before you see everyone rocking that portable setup honestly.

I bought one just for the hell of it and I’m actually surprised. The only games I have for it are UMvC3 and Lumines Electronic Symphony and those games can keep me busy for hours.

What’s cool about it too is that since Marvel is on it, I can use it to practice at tournaments while I wait for my match to come up. It’s really nifty.

You could do that with PSP as well if you were attending an Alpha 3 or Tekken 6 tournament or something

Vita for ultimate marvel is excellent from a gameplay wise perspective, however I found the controls somewhat lacking. The d-pad is great on the vita, better than the ps3, but my main gripe is the lack of additional button mapping on the rear/front touch panel a la ssfiv 3ds.

Eventually you can make do, but I’m dropping stupidly simple actions too often, like wave dashing consistently or triangle jumping that would all be alleviated if I could bind additional actions like assists to the touch panels.

A joystick adapter for the vita would be a nice option, especially for tournaments like others have mentioned. I can’t even imagine being able to play sfxt on vita properly if they didn’t include a joystick option, but we’ll see.

Last I checked Sony denies any External Controller adapter currently for the Vita. Were assuming the Data connector/ USB cable can support a host mode, and that Sony would update the bluetooth firmware. As of now the Bluetooth on the Vita supports the following, Keyboards, mouse?, wireless head sets (including mic), and maybe file transfer. There no compatibility right now between the Vita and the PS3 Six Axis or Dual Shock 3 controllers.

It’s all about the games. The only things I absolutely want to play on this is Gravity Daze, Persona 4: The Golden, and maybe Little King’s Story. Not much else I care about so far.

All I want to know is if it:

a) uses a micro SIM
b) can be unlocked

Because my current plan has unlimited data, so if it uses a micro SIM, I can simply stick my SIM in.
