The UFighter X mod is much too messy and imprecise to be worth the trouble. I tried it four or five times, each with disappointing results. One direction was always more sensitive than the rest, and it made the entire pad too stiff.
I definitely DO recommend the tape dots mod, though. I tried this with layers of packing tape and a paper punch, and it works extremely well… it gives you the best control you could possibly expect from a seperated cross D-pad. On top of that, it’s cheap and easy to clean up… there’s no glue to have to scrape off the pad if you’ve done it incorrectly, and sticking on the dots is far easier than squeezing out just the right amount of hot glue to make the UFighter X mod work.
Finally got my copy of SFA3 with the D pad add on from Capcom. Works great. It definitely aids me on the diagonals.
I’d do a guide for this, but it’s such a hassle. My house is all dusty and it took forever to get the face cover back on with minimal dust on the inside T_T.
you can also see the hole puncher used. It is the ones you get from arts and craft shops (but i guess you could use a regular paper hole punch as well).
EDIT: I can’t take credit for the pictures. They where taken by a member from the GameFAQS SFA3 MAX forum (its a 28 page thread).
BTW, I didn’t think that modding the buttons would help, but seems it does. Might give this a try (but i hate the dread of getting dust in my PSP… AGAIN…)
