For some reason when I plug in my ps360+ fightstick into my xbox 360 slim, the buttons and jlf inputs do not work but I can turn the system on with start + select.
The fightstick works on my old xbox 360 elite, ps3, and ps4 when playing mk in ps3 bc mode.
I tried some of the force mode button combinations for Xbox 360 mode when plugging the fight stick into the Xbox 360 slim but to no avail.
I feel it can’t be the front usb ports because I tried connecting my non modded 360 fightstick and it works fine on it.
My ps360+ is updated to v. 1.66 which is the latest version.
Well I made some progress figuring out this issue.
The Xbox 360 slim uses less power than the old 360 in order to generate less heat.
My modded fightstick had a 5 inch usb cable going from the ps360+ to the Neutrik then a 15 ft usb cable (both cables and Neutrik came from focus attack) going from the Neutrik to the 360’s usb port.
So I thought, maybe the ps360+ isn’t getting powered enough to fully work because of the length of the usb cable setup on my fight stick, plus the fact that the slim 360 uses less power. Which means the usb ports on the 360 probably don’t produce much power through them to power the ps360+ through 15 plus ft of usb cable.
I then checked the length of the usb cable on a TE Round 2 unmoderated, and it’s 13ft. So I went out and bought a 10ft a-b usb cable (a gigaware 2.0 a-b to be exact) and connected it directly to the ps360+ port on the pcb. It worked but the connection was terrible. I was getting button inputs half the time and the stick inputs cut out after a few minutes.
So before I gave up I decided why not try connecting the 5 inch usb wire to the Neutrik, then the connect the 10ft usb cable to the Neutrik. Oddly enough, it worked! All the inputs worked and didn’t cut out, both button and stick inputs. I have no idea why adding the 5 inch usb cable and Neutrik to the 10ft usb cable made it work.
If anyone has any idea as to why that is I’d love to know. I have a feeling that my 10ft usb cable isn’t of the same quality as the 5 inch usb cable I got from focus attack. So I guess having the 5 inch focus attack usb cable driving directly from the ps360+ pcb was probably necessary to give steadier information transfer.
Just to be sure that I’m getting the optimal input response for my inputs, I am thinking of replacing the 10ft usb cable for one the fgc may recommend. Any suggestions on a good 10ft usb cable? Or do you feel it’s not necessary to get a better quality 10ft usb cable?
Bottom line, as far as I can tell, the Xbox 360 Slim needs a USB cable 13ft or less in order to power the ps360+.
Its also the quality of cable you buy.
A Cable with thicker gauge wire will out perform a thinner wire cable.
A 26 gauge wire for a USB cable at 10 feet will excel compared to a 30 gauge wire at 8 feet of length.
Well the issue with longer cables is a phenomenon called voltage drop
The longer the wire is, the lower the voltage is at the far end. Usually 10 feet alone is not enough.
There also the thinner the wire you use, the higher resistance the wire has thus dropping voltage.
Lower voltage also means weaker signals.
But Length + thin gauge wire = significant signal lost.
Good USB cables offer some shielding as well. If you slice open a good UCB cable you find this wire braid inside encompassing the wiring
The braid and foil is to resist RF interference as well as to reinforce the cable. Cheaper cable ignores this.
Here is a good example of the interior of a quality USB cable.
Most USB cables do not have a twisted pair (because the USB 1.1 and 2.0 specs lack this)
Better made USB cables does this on the D+ and D- lines.
The Twisted pair is to avoid cross talk, the signals on the D+ and D- lines don’t interfere with each other (via RF and EM).
With that info in mind, is the usb cable I ordered from monoprice.com linked in my previous post going to be the best choice for performance and quality for my situation with my ps360+ fightstick and Xbox 360 Slim?
Well many sticks, like the Hori and Mad Catz sticks have them by default.
I suggest even if you dual mod or replace the UBS cable to keep this part in there.
Few modders say that the ferrite core isn’t needed. I say it doesn’t hurt to have them.
for external cables, you can get snap on ferrite cores, they are available from many places electronic components are.
Okay, getting a snap on ferrite core sounds like a good idea. Might as well shoot for the best performance after all,
Just a few questions about it. Would any snap on ferrite core work? Or do I need to look for one that’s a certain type and specification? Also, is there a proper distance towards the end of my external a-b usb cable that I would have to attach the snap on ferrite core onto for it to function properly? Finally, would I need multiple ferrite cores to get the best performance for my ps360+ fightstick? Only reason why I ask is because I’ve seen some usb cables with two ferrites cores on them; one at each end.
Don’t do that, do not ever post a Bump. People here do not pay kindly to post bumps. Especially the moderators.
If there gone a few days without a response then no one has an answer for you.
There no particular brand, snap on ferrite core is already a type. There is no special type to use, the only thing there a real selection for is sizes.
Too small and it don’t fit (obviously), but if its too big you can loop the cable though for a 2nd pass. All a ferrite core does (in laymens terms) is act like a “sponge” or “filter” for Electromagnetic interference coming from the cable it self. And yes that is a thing, any electric wire will produce it’s own EM field, and if there 2 data wires next to each other with polarities going in two different directions you get whats called cross talk. The EM of the two wires will interfere with each other. Its why we have things such as Twisted pairs and Coaxial wire for networking, the idea is to negate some of this cross talk.
I would not imagine you need more than one but if you want to get two get two. Any more will not help.
And this is no guarantee it would work ether.
Random question, how is your stick wired inside? Can you provide Photos.
Sorry about that. Wasn’t trying to be annoying or anything.
Okay well that’s good to know that there isn’t a particular brand or impendance specification I should be looking out for. So basically I just need to find one that roughly fits my usb cable. I noticed in my old TE fightstick the ferrite core (kinda looks like this, maybe a bit shorter http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/fb-94/emi-suppression-bead/1.html) on its usb cable had the usb cable looped in and around it once. I know you said it doesn’t really matter if the ferrite core fits the gauge of the usb perfectly or not, but would you recommend I find a snap on ferrite core that I can loop my usb cable through in and around once like my old TE? Or one that fits flush to the USB’s gauge would be fine?
Unfortunately, I don’t have a pic right now of my fightstick’s internal setup on me. But, I’ll upload one later today if I’m able. Its nothing special though. I just have my PS360+ anchored in the bottom left corner of my SSFIV TE S, then I have a 18 inch (roughly) usb a-b cable snaking around the bottom half to the right side and towards my select button hole which I put a Neutrik and attached it to the 18 inch USB cable. Its not really cramped inside so tucking a ferrite core in there wouldn’t be a issue.
