I have just bought a PS3 (the 60GB Euro version with BC) but I want to play PS2 games on it like Street Fighter Alpha Anthology or Hyper Street Fighter II.
I want to buy a stick and I have been doing some research on the forum. Customs sticks are very nice but they are a bit expensive and apparently you have to wait a lot for them.
I was thinking about trying to go for a stock stick. I was looking at the Hori sticks but in the Hori site it says that they do not work with PS2 games on the PS3. I have also been looking at the Mayflash fighting stick.
Does anyone know if these sticks really have an issue with PS2 games on the PS3? If that is the case, what can I do to solve this problem? In a thread I read something about a Pelican PS2 to PS3 Adapter but I am not sure if this is what I need since I have a PS3 and not a PS2. Can someone give me some advice please?
the hori fighting stick 3 and hori real arcade pro 3 DO work with ps2 games on the ps3.
the pelican ps2 to ps3 adapter converts a ps2 controller end to a usb adapter end, which works on ps3.
Did you test one with some PS2 games by any chance? Because in this link I found on the Hori site it says that the Hori FS3 does not work with PS2 software.
I would love to get one of those because I found one for just 18 if I had a confirmation that someone tested it and it worked with some Street Fighter games for the PS2.
Saying the HRAP3 works for PS2 games on the PS3 is disingenuous at best. I mean, YEAH, it WORKS, but uhhh:
If you use the HRAP3 for PS2 games on your PS3, your characters will randomly jump. Maybe once a minute, maybe way more often. Sometimes twice in a row. Also, don’t be surprised if the game suddenly pauses, the PS Button menu suddenly flies up, or a random attack you didn’t press shoots out. In short, extra inputs will be sent to the game while you play any PS2 game, regardless of whether or not you’re even touching the goddamn thing.
As for Fighting Stick 3, I have no idea if it also has this problem. But the problem I’ve outlined above has been present since at least 1.80. I can verify right now it’s still in for 2.10. I’ve emailed Sony, posted on their blog, emailed Hori; basically it’s like lulz you’re screwed. You’d probably be better off getting an HRAP2 and a converter. I don’t have that set-up, but I haven’t heard any complaints about it, either. Might want to ask around some more.
(The reason those sites say it’s not compatible with PS2 software is because at the time they were released, the PS3 system software only allowed SIXAXIS to be used for PS2 games, period. They basically make zero guarantee the things will work with PS2 games. For good reason, apparently. Thanks a lot, Sony.)
Thanks for the info Hiruke. So basically I am better off buying a PS2 stick and using a converter like Pelican on the PS3 than buying a PS3 stick for my PS3!? Seems like Sony doesn’t care about people who want to play PS2 games on the PS3 then.
What’s so different in a PS3 stick from a PS2 stick which causes problems with PS2 games?
HIRUKU is right, after my problems with the HRAP3, I bought a Hori Real Arcade Pro 2 and use a pelican converter and no problems since, or better I just play on my ps2!
I’m not much of a tech guy, but I assume it’s because the converter more or less makes it like you have a SIXAXIS plugged in rather than some nonstandard controller. I really have no idea why it doesn’t work, or why Sony steadfastly refuses to let it work. I mean, the HRAP3 works perfectly on PS3 software and even on the PC, so it can’t be something wrong with the stick itself, right? I don’t know. But Sony just says “lol not licensed by SCEA” or “not Certified USB” or w/e (that’s when they aren’t trying to convince me I’m trying to plug a PS2 controller into my PS3). I bet if it was an issue with a Rock Band or Guitar Hero controller they’d stfu and just fix it. Hori just told me they can’t help me (I asked them to ask Sony to fix it, haha) because it’s not officially released in the U.S. Short of finishing learning how to speak and write Japanese, there’s not much more I can do as a consumer. I’ll probably post on their blog one last time next firmware update, but beyond that I’ll just be praying for the death of the PS2. Meh.
Besides, since PS2 backwards compatibility is basically dead in every region except NA (but that’s coming soon!) and fighting games are such a niche market (as evidenced by the fact that you have to import nearly anything not Capcom or SNK, including the damn joystick to begin with), Sony could really care less. Better off sticking with HRAP2 and PS2 until the genre fully transitions to PS3/Xbox 360. lol
Yeah. If I’d known beforehand, I’d have bought an HRAP2 and an HRAP3, instead of two HRAP3s. But no, people had to go and say that HRAP3 worked correctly with PS2 games on PS3. >.< Let’s not even get into the PS3’s terrible upscaler if you care to play it (PS2 games) on an HDTV. Hahaha.
Thank God you told me about all this mate. Well, I really had to go out of my way to buy a 60GB PS3 that’s BC because they are not available any more over here in Europe. You can only find the 40GB which is not BC.
I did all this because I wanted to play the PS2 Street Fighter games. I would never have thought that a joystick would cause me so much problems! At this stage I don’t know what to do. The HRAP2 does not look as nice as the 3 series and I’ve checked a bit around and I am noticing that it’s out of stock in many online stores. Perhaps I will get a custom stick after all…
Installing a Cthulhu in an HRAP is pretty easy, and works perfectly on PS3 including BC games. With a little soldering, you could also rewire the Home button on the stick to the Cthulhu as well. I can’t do anything about the turbo functions, but the main eight play buttons, start, select, and stick you can have working without soldering (and you can make start+select=home if you like). With a little soldering, you can connect the home button as well.
Just wanted to let you know you have an option other than buying a whole new stick.
Hey all, I’m looking at picking up a PS3 stick to stick an MC Cthulhu into for use with PS3/PS2.
I’m mostly looking at the Hori Fighting Stick 3 and the MadCatz SF4 FightStick SE to host the board – does one of those sticks make for any significantly harder installation of the board than the other, or are there any other stick-specific issues I should know about in its interaction with the board? Or is it more or less the same for both in terms of hooking everything up, getting the board to fit, and all that jazz?
And if the two are about the same in terms of ease of Cthulhu installation, which one is easier and/or cheaper to swap parts on for future upgrades? (I mostly care about ease of button swapping; I have little desire to mess with the sticks unless the stock stick is prone to some kind of mechanical failure/idiosyncracy…and I have gotten burned before, so that is a serious consideration on my part.)
^With the SF4 SE stick, you could simply snip the wires going from the terminal strip to the stock PCB to the MC Cthulhu instead. As well as the wiring harness for the joystick (although I would recommend replacing the stock joystick as well). That would make the turbo panel/buttons useless though, if that’s a big deal for you.
The hardest part would be to solder the PS2 cable to the MC Cthulhu and replace/rewire the original USB cable.
Kazujiro: Loss of turbo panel isn’t really a big deal to me, I don’t think I’d really use it all that much.
Rewiring and soldering shouldn’t be a big deal, given that I’m not going to be the one doing it. (My dad’s a longtime electronics geek, so he’ll probably know what’s up with most of the wiring.)
Other than that, it sounds like I’ve made my purchase. Thanks for the input, Kazujiro.
