Okay, not trying start a VS thread, no fanboyism or any homo shit. I plan on picking up either console when KOF13 comes out. I have to put emphasis on a used console because I don’t plan on paying full retail. I would go for either the 60GB 360 or the 80GB PS3. I don’t care about backwards compatibility. The funny thing is that I’m not much of a gamer, my last console was the N64 (what a let down) and then moved on to PC gaming, and now PC gaming is dying off, the chance of seeing KOF13 getting ported to PC (even thought Taito Type X2 is off the shelf PC hardware) is nil. The FPS has largely died, the last really good one was Team Fortress 2 (still fun) most shooters nowadays are generic and hold your hand. I hate MMO’s for the record.
I am however quite the retro gamer, and love the old 8 and 16 bit games (Genesis does what Nintendon’t) and of course the Neo Geo shit. So, I’m leaning towards the 360 because of all the XBLA stuff like Castle Crashers, and the SNKP stuff.
But what puts me off about the 360 is the high failure rate. I’ve read and heard so many horror stories of consoles (even Elite units) suddenly dying in well-ventilated spaces. Which amuses me because my old Nintendo still works, and that’s over 20 years old now. Which pulls me back to the PS3 with it’s comparatively low failure rates.
So, I’m torn. If I get a used 360 60GB off ebay, it’ll cost me about $150 (not counting shipping), then an additional $36 for XBLA and another $35 for a Hori Controller. Whereas the PS3 would be $200 (again, not counting shipping) and I might need to pick up a headset, I like PS-style controllers, I’ve used Logitech Dual Action’s since 07 and if I could I’d fuck it. So all things considered I’m paying about the same for both.
Don’t you 360 users have an extra warranty extension anyway?
For KoF13, it’s hard to tell what differences there will be between systems, if any.
You already mentioned XBLA, and I guess you could adapt to the 360 controller (have you picked on up yet?)
tl;dr. It doesn’t matter. Get what you want. I’d be more happier choosing something I wanted rather than having some silly folks on a forum tell me what system I should get. You can always return it /sell it on ebay if you’re unhappy, which quite frankly I find is difficult for consoles these days, other than maybe the wii if you don’t like the audience it targets.
EDIT: 360 hardware failure warranty is THREE years. I don’t know why people are still using the RROD argument these days.
if the failure rate of the 360 is an issue, I would buy an used or new elite. I dont know if those are any better in the failure rate but I had 2 of the original 360s fail on me so I said screw it and got an elite. But if the money is an issue, maybe the ps3 is better, but don’t those issues too?
tl,dr: If you can afford a new system, I would go with a new 360 elite rather than a new PS3
Tournaments are run on both systems. Many majors are run on PS3, but because of popular converters OG use. But a tournament near you may use 360.
Not to mention you’d get a device compatible with both systems if you’re serious.
Did you bother returning the 360 via warranty? How long did it take to fail?
Both the 360 and PS3 can die… RROD/YLOD are just probabilities, it doesn’t mean it WILL happen.
Microsoft has an extended warranty because they screwed up some QC. I wonder how many get fed up and buy a new system rather than using the warranty?
There is no difference between the failure rate of the elite and arcade, they are the same! The elite just has a few extra features, even microsoft wouldn’t dare sell you improved reliability at a higher price.
That being said, the RROD has been fixed (apparently) with the latest models so if you buy a used one it needs to be an 09 model or more recent, tbh i’d suggest buying a new one to be on the safe side or a PS3 seeing as you’re not bothered about console spec. games.
Since you say you’re not really a gaming person, I’d recommend the PS3. I have both systems and a ton of games for both of them, but when it comes down to it, the PS3 is pretty much the best blu-ray player out there, and it works very well as a media center for me. That would be the deciding factor for me, what else can I do with it? When I want to watch a movie or listen to music, I bust out the PS3.
yes I got the warranty when i got it. I would say the first one lasted about 8 months? Can’t remember it was awhile ago. The 2nd one lasted 8-12 months. I was tired of going back and forth so I got an elite. I’ve had my elite over a year now
If you’re getting a system from the used market I’d go with the one with the higher reliability rate, the PS3. You also have more arcade stick stick options with it.
I was on the fence about which console to get as well. I was about to get a 360 when literally the day before I would have purchased it my friend’s 360 red rings on us. That put a ton of doubt on me so I ended up not buying anything then.
If failure rate worries you, I’d suggest a PS3, I hear they have very few problems. I know I’m going to get one soon.
EDIT: Also the azproc, when you say “Both the 360 and PS3 can die… RROD/YLOD are just probabilities, it doesn’t mean it WILL happen.”, while that is true, I would argue that the Red Ring has a much higher probability.
I have a 360, it hasn’t failed me yet, I have had it for almost 3 years now. I played frequently. The controllers are failing me though ;/ (I played too much on them so they’re starting to wear… and also these few times I threw them across the room onto tiles.) They’re good electronically still… but the analog stick is wearing. (that’s about it)
EDIT: I have… the Pro version, (back when they had a pro… which was in between the Arcade and ELITE when I bought it.)
I was an early adopter of the Xbox 360 Pro, it lasted for about 1 year give or take. I went through like 3 xbox 360’s until I found and figured out how to fix them. It’s pretty easy to fix them, you can find guides on the net and youtube.
I’ve sold 2 of the fixed 360’s and bought me a PS3 slim.
So to answer your question, I’d go for a reliable one i.e. PS3. But if you can get a used and or cheap/broken xbox 360 and want to attempt to fix it, could possibly save some bucks for ya.
The 360 is cheaper, just get the one that’s cheaper. In terms of software both are pretty much equal in terms of quality and quantity with some obvious variations. PS3 has blu-ray, but clearly your looking for a gaming machine and Netflix on both systems can provide high quality HD movies and what not. Why buy 20-30 dollars disks when you can just them streamed.
If failure rates shouldn’t be an issue if you get a used system from a reputable source. Make sure the system you want has a warranty of some either from Microsoft of the seller and make sure you register the system to Sony or Microsoft. Also both Ps3 and 360’s can be prone to failure, it’s just that 360 had some serious issues back in 2006-2008 that they haven’t been able to shake off.
Buying used 360s is risky business, even from a “refutable source”. No used console seller can tell if they have a 360 that is genuinely fine or if it is one that someone rebaked (it’ll work just fine… for a few weeks.) or towel tricked, and more likely than not they will find some way to not reimburse you if the console turns out to be a dud. I would highly advise against buying a used 360 unless it is insanely below retail or unless you are a gambling man (people do strike gold now and then).
Since you would end up paying the same for either console, go with PS3.
I’ve had the exact same elite since the day they launched. I also have a launch pro (for girlfriend), and the red Resident Evil Elite (room mate). None of which have had any technical failures.
My PS3 has not had any technical failures as well. I can honestly say I prefer my 360. To each their own.
Lame think about the 360 warranty that it doesn’t cover the dvd drive, and one of my drives died, and 2 of my friends did also, seems it pretty much covers the 3rlod, because m$ knows it’s going to die
