I am looking into swapping out my OEM 80gig HDD with something alittle “beefier”. I already know how to swap out the drive itself, but I was puzzled to see that Sony optioned to use the 2.5" SATA I 5400rpm format in a $600USD machine. SATA II has been out for quite a time prior to this.
So my question is: can or will my PS3 (CECHE01) “fat” console benefit from using a 2.5" SATA II 7200rpm HDD? Is it even compatible or if installed, will it simply default to 5400rpm disk speeds?
a 7200rpm drive will fit, and honestly you won’t notice that much more heat. I upgraded mine to a 7200rpm drive I had, no noticeable heat.
SATA II is backwards compatabile with SATA, and vice versa. You’ll have no problems.
I did not have much luck in finding anything useful that would tell me what exactly the PS3’s SATA controller was capable of, which is why I thought someone here might know. I know what the OEM configuration is of course, but that did not tell me what exactly the system could handle. For all I know, the PS3 could handle something much better than what Sony originally equipped it with.
I will probably go with a 200-250gig SATA 3.0Gb/s 7200rpm unit then.
there is honestly no point in placing a 7200 drive in your ps3 the difference is only fractions of a second. plus you generate more heat. i replaced mine with a 5400 and its fine. there is no benefit in putting a faster hard drive in your PS3, you wont even notice a difference.
