I believe the holes are for clamping the stick to a desk, now a bad idea in theory but not sure about practice though.
It’s a shame the Joysticks that come from China are all either Green or Pink Sanwa buttons/Balltop, they’d be more tempting, but apparently they are the main two colours available there, which is strange.
