I understand why they made lariat the way it is now in sfv from you analysis of our v skill evansgambit, and now I’m certain that we won’t get much in the way of lariat buffs in terms of startup(or its invincibility even)
If zangief had his 4 frame lariat, or an option of 3x k/ 3x p lariat, he’d essentially be able to v body pressure and have the threat of a dp that can’t be CC’d on block.
Do you think we could make the 9 frame lariat work like this?
On hit V-Flex is +2 and on block it’s -2. So the recovery frames of V-Flex has to be at least 25 frames minimum, for it to be cancelled and comboed into VT. This would make it highly whiff punishable, which we could easily test.
Coming out of V-Body, after the absorb will take 10 frames. A heavy attack will have about 20 frames recovery while a medium attacks will have about 10 to 15 frames of recovery. Zangief will almost definitely have the frame advantage. Whether he gets guaranteed damage will depend on:
Their recovery frames vs Start-up frames of your attack. This already rules out Zangief’s 10+ frame startup moves like all of his heavy attacks.
Attack Range, which may rule out SPD. But not necessary an extended walk LP SPD.
Hurtbox vs Hitbox animation, whether you can hit their retracting limb fast enough
Spacing, but expect them to have appropriate spacing, like they wouldn’t hit a ranged attack point blank. More likely they will be at max range.
That’s interesting you came up with the Lariat thing. Because it would be so good, if it works. I don’t know, what the hit box of the lariat is like. But I suspect its the entire arms on the first hit, which was different to SF4, which was only torso on the first hit. It doesn’t hit crouching states well, so already we lost a fair amount of equity.
And then we really need to look at the Lariat’s hitbox. For example, the first recovery frame of a heavy poke will have its full limb extended out, and easily hit. Compared to the last few recovery frames of that heavy poke, where it is almost fully retracted. Can the Lariat with its 9 frame startup, reach? It would be quite difficult, as we are just hitting the very last few frames of recovery.
*It would be great, if Zangief had a KKK Lariat, crouching Lariat, that only hits low. Kind of like the whiff animation of his Ultra 2 when on the ground.
Having the frame advantage after V-Body is good, because there’s always the threat of an SPD, if they stay put. But if they jump, pre-jump frames opens up their risk of being tagged. And that’s where we need to capitalize.
So, you can see, its up to us, to figure out the best buttons to press post V-Body. The frame advantage could be anywhere from +1 to +5, which would make Zangief’s medium pokes more competitive.
EDIT: YOU CAN MOVE THE LARIAT FORWARD, well that may certainly change things. But will it work?
Probably best to go for st.mp or st.mk post V-Body vs medium pokes if you’re trying to catch a jump or back-dash; st.mp is faster while st.mk has better reach. I don’t think the pay-off for landing Lariat is worth the risk of it whiffing or being blocked.
