It had a following for a while and shit before it got into Evo though right? I dunno it just seems like its being taken for granted that the Marvel crowd is going to move en masse to TvC. Just curious really, Evo is pretty much a non-entity for me outside vids and forum news.
oh well, evolve or die. we cant just sit back and keep all the old games, and keep adding new ones. whenever a new game is released, we will lose some purists and the lazy people that don’t want to learn a new game. But a lot of ppl will convert, and/or get a ton of new players. We can’t keep playing the same old 10 year old games forever. it would be down right stupid to keep the old games when we have been asking for new games for so long. if the die hard marvel freaks can’t move on, there’s plenty of other events they can set up shop at
I don’t think TvC will get in. MvC2 is the hypest machine and the crowd is what makes the event so great. Even if TvC ends up been Mahvel-like in goodness, the Wii launch probably guarantees that many of the hype guys will be left out of it.
Right now none of them means anything to sponsors, and if MvC2 gets launched for new gen in time I think TvC is as good as gone. Still, if new gen is not out, I could see Evo getting rid of all old games so everybody could bitch equally and not complain about favoritism. This would mean getting rid of GG and SSBB too.
SF4, HD Remix and something Namco (SC4?) are in for sure. New gen MvC2 would be too, I guess. I can see TvC + Marvel there, but 2 SFs and 2 Mahvel games geting most spots would get some non-Capcom people mad. SSBB, BB or GG, T6 and maybe something VF/DoA will fight for the last few spots IMO.
I don’t see CvS2, ST (even if HD Remix isn’t out) and SNK games having any chances. KoF XII is new, but nor most players nor most sponsors will give a damn.
i hope 3S doesn’t get the boot
Obvious choices: SF4, STHD, TvC.
3S & MvC2: they’re both old games but they still get a lot of play so I think they have a good chance of being played at Evo again.
Other possible choices: GGAC, Smash, maybe Tekken.
Unlikely choices: CvS2, KOF98UM - both are great games imo, but a lot of people don’t like CvS2, and there aren’t that many KOF players in USA.
Wow, I’m surprised to see Sabre say TvC has such a strong chance. The Wii isn’t really a fighting game console (the major difference between that and the PS2). Not hating on the game itself, just curious how people would play it.
SC4 definitely has to be in there. DR is on its last legs, and SC4 is getting nice numbers. It’s also probably the most global fighting game - Canada has a very strong crew that will most likely show up, and you could potentially have players from France, the Dominican Republic, Singapore, etc. depending on how things go.
I think Brawl will remain in there, with Smashboards rules. The crowd enjoyed items, but they guarantee a low turnout.
Guilty Gear should fit in there. It has proven itself as one of the biggest games time and time again, and Blazblue will not be out on console in time.
I’m still not seeing how TvC gets in ahead of next-gen console Marvel, but Evo has surprised us plenty of times before.
we are a tricky bunch
vf5
uno rush
josh: not really different than how ggxx people had to find ways to play import ggxx. granted, yes, it is a hurdle cuz lets be honest, who got wii sticks? lol But if people like the game, they will find their ways to make it happen. And I think the game has a ton of hype behind it in this community, atleast, to make it a noteworthy addition. But it is a bummer that it had to be on wii. I have faith this will make it over to ps3 and 360 in the future(it better!)
CvS2
MvC2
3rd Strike
SF 4
ST REMIX & ST
TEKKEN
not a possibility until r comes out.
but even then…
The new next-gen MvC2, with or without a remix mode, beats TvC or maybe anything but SFIV in practically every aspect. It’s new, it’s good business for Capcom US, characters are way more recognizable for casuals and sponsors, and it is the only sure way to keep the unique MvC2 hype without the original game, and without the damn blue screens.
The old DC MvC2 IMO has the best chances of any old game o stay in, from hype alone, but geting rid of ALL old games, including MvC2, is a good way for Evo to equalize bitching and avoid accusations of playing favorites, so I can see that happening too. In this case, TvC would be in for sure, I guess (it may be in even in addition to MvC2 if it pleases the community once is out)
Team Fortess 2 for Evo 2009…yeah I said it.
If R does come out, VF5 could at least be in the discussion. Because, you know, it’s new.
Evo2k8—>Evo2k9 Predictions
SF3s—>SF4
ST—>STHD
CvS2—>KoF12
MvC2—>MKvDC
T5:DR—>SC4
SSBB—>SSBB
Please MAKE 3rd strike TEAMS ONLY…its really the only enternaing way to watch the game.
Yeah, back when T6 was still expected I had serious doubts that SC4 would have more hardcore, willing-to-travel support than it… but now with the T6BR announcement we won’t be seeing it on consoles until well after Evo 2009, and apparently the SC4 crowd at SB3 was big and crazy. With T5DR dying out, I can’t imagine it will stay on the roster. I think that SC4 is a really good call for the lineup’s pseudo-obligatory “Namco spot.”
These theory bullshit threads are way more fun than they should be.
My prediction is:
SF3 Third strike (will stay)
SF 2 Turbo HD (on ps3 if it comes out in time)
SF4
Brawl (will stay items or not)
MVC2 (will return question is if there is a ps2/360/ps3 version coming out it’ll depend whether its as good as the DC, or we’ll see it again for another year on DC).
T5 Dark (will stay, unless japan gets T6 out before, but i doubt it)
Accent Core (will return)
VF and SC won’t make it (sorry), if they aren’t big on the arcade chance are they won’t be considered for EVO.
Blaz Blue won’t make it, it’s just a new game but not an established franchise.
No SNK game again.
TvC like Blaz Blue won’t make it for same reasons.
CVS2 will be out and quite possibly will have a big side tourney.
those are my predictions.
I swear I just said this earlier, but I really think SC4 has beaten out KOF as the most global fighting game. Mainly because unlike KOF it’s actually big in North America as well. But yeah, just on Youtube alone you can find high-quality play from places like Singapore, Mexico, & Hong Kong (these fuckers are awesome and they upload like 150 matches a month, I swear). This only scratches the surface, too.
I suspect a lot of the appeal lies in the fact that this is one of the more basic fighting games out there. Execution is simple for most characters, and spacing doesn’t even play a huge role since movement has been heavily nerfed from previous installments. As such, this game is mostly about the up-close mindgame, which is the easiest aspect of fighters to grasp IMO. This is very similar to how 3rd Strike attracted so many beginners & mid-level players, except that the core mindgame here is deeper and much better balanced from a risk/reward standpoint (hence why high-level players also like this game).
Here in the US, the community’s always been there but a lot of them just disappeared due to SC3 stinking up the joint. 4 has brought almost all of the veterans back, and there’s been an influx of 2-D players (e.g. myself), DOA players (e.g. Tom Brady & Ryujin, who placed top 16 at SB3), and people who are just plain new to fighters. The only thorny issue right now is Algol; the majority of players appear to favor banning him, but certain regions have already said they never will.
Also, one last thought: Tournaments might be able to draw Star Wars fanboys here and there now that Vader & Yoda will be tourney-legal. Back in the days of SC2, I ran into a lot of Nintendo kids who wanted to play the game but were disappointed to learn that they couldn’t use Link. I would have to imagine there could be something similar going on with a franchise like Star Wars, and you would be surprised how many tournament players came from this sort of background.
…Holy shit that was way longer than I planned. Clearly I find these threads fun on a certain level, too. =P
