Look at it from my point of view, why would I wanna give you any pointers for Hugo if you boast like you have the best Hugo around (and since I’ve been using him for over 4 years I think I have something in terms of experience to offer peeps who are just starting to use him). Like I said in my first post to you I didn’t mean it to be rude (its written there). If you took offence, well then you know how I feel when you talk like my Hugo is far inferior to yours. I don’t have any beef with you either.
Hey Hax, I’ll give you a few pointers against Alex from my point of view. I think the best way to beat Alex is to shut down his main ways of dealing damage. They’re a bit limited so if you can do that the match will be yours. Alex is very reliant on mind games -much like Makoto- so if you can read your opponent well and avoid getting knocked down you’ll be fine. But to be able to do that you must first learn all his options and all the counters Hugo has. Hugo has a disadvantage in terms of mobility but his mix-ups are better, so if you can get close to Alex you should have the upper hand.
You might want to consider using SA3 to counter his pressure game when you mess up and get knocked down. Generally Alexes gameplan is to knock you down and mixup from there, so SA3 gives you a way out -it charges faster than SA1 and you get two of them. SA1 is scarier but it has only one stock so if they’re good at baiting it out, you’re in big trouble once you lose all your meter. SA3 is also safer against people who jump around a lot.
Don’t try to parry on wake-up! I swear I get way too much free damage from people who get suckered into trying to parry my offense with Alex. He has too many options to mess with your head if you play his game, he can mix up really well, cancel into super, use back HP/power bomb, delay hits, etc. The safest options on wake-up are block low (and watch for his st. HP overhead) and jump away (+ air parry). Alexes only good low poke is very punishable on block upclose (with cr. mk) so you can even get away with blocking high a lot. But you can’t always use the safest options, you have to try to regain control on wake-up to beat Alex sometimes. The idea is to not be TOO passive so that he second guesses himself and stops attacking on wake-up -once he does, he loses his main source of damage. Don’t 360 immediately on wake-up because Alexes meatys (mainly st. MK) are very good and will beat it every time. If you see him stuttering or ticking into throw, THEN quickly 360 because it’s much faster than his power bomb. When you have a super charged, a lot of players will try to jump at the last moment to try to bait it out so you can (ground parry) > LK shootdown backbreacker.
If you’re confident you can read your opponent well and know he’s going to attack for sure, just reversal SA3 on wake-up. Because Hugo is so large, you also have to learn how to deal with the stomp frenzy on wake-up. Just tap either direction at the last moment and you’ll either get a parry or a block, then react accordingly. Wake-up Stampedes shouldn’t be an issue as they lose to high meaties (claps/st. HP overhead) all the time. The only good wake-up moves Alex has are his supers so watch his meter carefully when on the offense. Against air ticks (such as jumping LP, power bomb), I would just treat it as a 50/50 and jump/360 when I suspect a throw is coming. If you feel risky and decide to 360 your way out, make sure your execution is perfect!
You need a lot of patience to win this match but you can frustrate Alex because his options are more limited than yours. Against turtling Alexes who spam EX Elbow Slashes, slowly close distance by walking and throwing out st. MPs. This can work in your favor because if Alex is turtling then he’s standing in his corner, exactly where you want him to be. Once you trap Alex in the corner, he won’t be able to escape because his mobility sucks and the risk/damage ratio will be entirely in your favor. Avoid jumping in to close distance on Alex, his anti-airs options are good and difficult to parry. You can get away with a lot of jumping around online because of button delay but you’ll get punished a lot if you try it against good players offline. Alex also has better range on air to air moves (jumping HK, jumping HP) so it’s best to work on your ground game instead. Because your character is so big, he can basically hit you at any time so avoid jumping in unless he’s already commited to a move. If he’s commited or if you’re close enough to jump in, Hugo’s splash is really good here because Alex has a lot trouble dealing with cross-ups. But I think it’s safer to fight him on the ground and look for EX Elbow Slashes until you get close enough. This is probably more difficult to perform in lag so I can understand where your problems come from. Online 3s is seriously messed up so don’t worry if you can’t beat Alex on Live.
Claps are good against Alexes ground game and pretty safe even when parried so you can mix them up with st. mp. You can even hit-confirm the claps into SA3 up close. The reason I find them good against Alex is because his sprite is so large and his only decent low poke is his sweep at max distance. Don’t be afraid of him parrying your ground pokes because unless he’s right next to you, he has trouble dealing any kind of damage at all. Your pokes have slightly better range than Alexes and cr. MK knocks down so don’t be afraid to get into poke wars and if you get pushed back a bit, watch out for EX Elbow Slash. Learning to red parry the second hit of Alexes EX Elbow Slashes helps a lot because that’s his main tool for pressure. Obviously this won’t work too well online but people will get scared if you can red parry > SA1 and you’ll be able to take control more easily.
If you can frustrate Alex on the ground and avoid getting knocked down, he’ll most likely start dashing in to regain control and initiate mind games. When Alex dashes in to close distance, he’s usually going for a throw to start unless he can charge partition in which case expect an air stampede or a throw. Unlike Chun-Li for instance, Alex really doesn’t have anything threatening when he turtles because he still has to knock you down AND force you to guess wrong to get the upper hand whether he’s got meter or not. If you can anticipate his mixups he usually becomes very predictable. So I think it basically comes down to a patience game and your ability to get close to Hugo without opening yourself too much, as well as your ability to read Alexes mixups and minimize the damage you take when knocked down.
Good luck!
Ok. In my opinion, for what its worth, it dont matter how long you’ve been using him. At the end of the day you will always have somthing new to learn. I didnt say i knew everything, i just put forward information which has proved useful to me.
I dont think i ever mentioned that i had the best Hugo…ever. I have a cocky attitude, yes, and thats because Hugo has been the character who got me my S grade…not number rank. I believe that speaks for its self, dont you?
Anyway, i dont particularly wish to continue the debate of he said Vs he said or i know more than you, because it dont matter. I certainly dont give a shit. Lets just play a couple of games instead, im actually up for a grudge match. :karate:
Although I’m not on XBL anymore there is a cybercafe near me that has XBL, I’ve been thinking about giving it a visit there sometime, what time you usually on? I’ll try and give you a hola when I do.
Dude, whats a UOH?
universal over head (strong+forward)
I got s rating with hugo on a human opponent
Good info man.
What do you mean by “messed up”? I dont know anyone with live and want an honest opinion.
I think Live kinda sucks compared to offline play. Lag makes it impossible to block stuff like full screen tackles or overheads and it’s almost impossible to hit-confirm so the game is completely different.
Hey thanks for all that info man, well appreciated. The truth is the xbox experience has messed my game a little bit because of delays, im still quite new to using Hugo and before that i used Ken for a while but then stopped playing for a while now that it came out on xbox i thought it would be a good idea to start playing again from home and get some experience for arcade and in doing that i wanted to start with a lower tier character mainly cos i liked zangief back in ST and so it forces me to learn how to defend and learn the system better, but Xbox live has given me some bad experience because of the lag/button delay issues (Except certain connections can be very good) and then it comes down to forced random games and it comes very boring and at the end you feel kinda anti climaxed cos you havent learned anything.
All that said though i’ll still keep playing on xbl cos i have a friends on my list that i have good connections with.
Ssongro yeah i think i will be down this friday, it is kind of a special day for 3s i wont miss that. And i would deffinetly like to see your Hugo in action hope to see a Tachi Gigas there man i have still yet to get that in a match, can do it in praccy but too hard to pull out in a match atm :lame:
Hmmm, looks like the majority of the London Hugo Posse is gonna be laying the smacl down at troc…
