I am a long time FG player and participant in the annual EVO tournament with some questions and issues that i would like to bring up. I noticed that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is being played on the Playstation3 at EVO this year. Also, some tournaments in my area which i also attend annually have been made part of the EVO Season, and are being ran on PS3’s as well.
Upon arriving at one of these EVO Season events, we were hearing players complaining about the version being played, and also noticed some severe problems with the version for ourselves which forced us to withdrawal from the competition. Based on our extensive research and testing, my fellow local players and I have reached this conclusion. It is very apparent that the Playstation3 version of MvsC3 is far inferior to the XBOX360 version for these reasons…
Input delay of 1-2 additional frame(s) versus the XBOX360
example:

Considerable frame rate issues (drops to the point of even under 35 fps from 60 fps) based on which or how many characters are on screen, or certain situations, to the point of affecting/preventing inputs and timing.
Considerable slow-downs and speed-ups in game speeds given certain scenarios not present in the XBOX360 version of the game.
Stages in-game attributing to the above 3 problems again not present in the XBOX360 version.
Instances where the game is being interrupted by spectators or other players wireless controllers.
How is it fair to Me or players in this, or any, area who have been attending these tournaments for years, just to have EVO come in and force us to play on sub-par equipment because of money/contracts/endorsements/politics that we the players don’t even benefit from. If EVO wants to use a certain console that is known to be a problem that is fine, but please leave it at that. Do not force it on our local events.
I think we deserve at minimum an explanation, seeing as how without us players from all around the world, EVO would not exist. Also i would like to add that i am a patron of both companys and am completely non-biased in this matter.
i played at that powerup tourny and it was my first time playin on ps3 and it really is terrible. it was a HUGE disadvantage for me because i was using sentinel and because hes so big it makes the game run all funky. plus if you Xfactor it makes the ps3 go into stupid mode and was causing me alot of problems. it sucks because arcade legends is a real respectable venue too, normally this kind of shit wouldnt fly there.
i threw out my evo seed points and dont plan on going to anymore evo seasons or evo itself. or ANY tourny running ps3 for that matter. not that anyone would be runnin ps3 unless they were being forced
i even talked to kiets up there in ohio during power and his response to me was, and i QUOTE “everyone sells out sooner or later” he acted like evo/srk gettin money from sony was gonna in the end give more exposure to the tournament scene. THATS NOT THE KIND OF EXPOSURE WE WANT DUDE.
i refuse to play on a shitty version so evo can get money. not gonna happen son. the people that make evo what it is should get more respect than that. THE PLAYERS…
this again???
Look man, if you lose a set against someone on the PS3 version, its not because of the 2 frame input delay… its because your opponent is better than you
That would be all well and good if I’d actually said this. I didn’t.
I told you repeatedly that, while I agree that the Xbox 360 version is superior, that you have no one to blame but yourself for not practicing the version you KNEW was being played in tournament. Instead you assumed it was identical or that the differences would be too small to bother you. You even preferred an Xbox360 setup on a laggy monitor at PowerUp over a PS3 setup on a CRT. PR Balrog and I were talking about how that monitor was intolerable, but you said to me that it, and I quote (a real quote, not a made up one) “was fine”.
Again, I agree that the 360 version is better, but if the tournament has been announced to be on PS3, it is up to you to either practice that version or choose not to compete on it. Evo does not force qualifying events to use the same equipment, so you might want to get some facts straight there. CEO 2011 in Florida is using 360, as far as I’m aware. Most evo events choose to use the same systems as Evo for consistency’s sake, or due to availability of equipment.
Its not as simple for a giant tournament like Evo to just say “Okay lets switch”. They’ve spent years acquiring PS3s, and to replace each one with an Xbox360 would have an unreasonable cost. As SmokeMaxX stated, and as MrWizard has stated, if you are willing to buy them the (im spit-balling a number here) 40-60 Xbox360s they’d need, they’d probably be very open to making a change.
Short version? I don’t appreciate you putting words in my mouth.
The reason EVO standardizes on the PS3 is because we have a large inventory of PS3s, the games are not substantively different between PS3 and XBox360, and switching from PS3 to XBox360 would cause issues in the community, both foreseen and unforeseen (e.g. people who bought the PS3 version of MvC3 to practice for EVO or people who have PS3-only sticks would be in a serious pickle).
Addressing some of your concerns directly:

[]The videos you linked show that the PS3 has 5 frames of input lag (sometimes 6) and the XBox 360 has 5 frames of input lag (sometimes 4). While not identical, it’s close enough that I would not say the PS3 version is “far inferior”
[]The videos you linked also show the PS3 maintaining 60 fps more consistently than the Xbox 360, but again the difference is not strong enough to say the 360 version is “far inferior” either.
[]EVO does not get any money or kickbacks from Sony for using PS3s.
[]EVO does not require that EVO Tournament Series events be run on the PS3. It’s entirely up to the event organizer.
[*]The wireless controllers issue is a problem with both PS3 and 360. Regardless, controllers which sync to the PS3 will be banned at EVO 2011. You will not be allowed to use them.

Lol…ok I’m gonna speak about this subject since I play on both systems. There are so many things could be causing these lags and not just the system itself. Input delay could be caused by the system or controllers. I don’t want to hear about delays unless you 100% solid evidence. The fps does drop on the ps3 doesn’t but, to my understanding and research it happens during the cinematics(not sure if this is the correct spelling). I will admit I have noticed some lag on certain stages but it came from not having a hdmi cable present and a few of my buddies tested it with an without hdmi. Even the TV being used plays a part. I have played in tournaments where I could spot out a second delay within in game itself regardless of the system. This debate will be endless so it comes down to this…if you want to play at evo then get over the ps3 being the system it will be played on.
