Pro Fighting Game Players (Like Wong, Daigo, etc.)

Its Calvin got a job. I dont know who the fuck this clarence guy is, but he’s not cool.

I heard you can become a pro gamer in 6 months. Especially if you are good at music games like guitar hero.

Sell weed at tournaments, that’s where you’ll make the most money.

And Korean Starcraft players are of a different breed. That game is viewed totally different than the way ANY video game is portrayed over here.

Don’t worry.

(Yeah, I was just looking for an excuse to put this movie somewhere here in FGD)

No sponsors = no money.

Hopefully that changes in the future, street fighter deserves it.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that, I have a really good feeling it well.

when it’s all said and done players old and new are gonna get paid in the future, you can count on that.

-street fighter as a whole is still really young, even though it’s been around for what seems like forever.

I remember reading a long thread on here about that. I saw a lot of good arguments from both sides, but I like how EVO is run based upon what I know from reading and watching vids. If the fighting game scene was more commercialized I think it would suck hard, like everything else that’s commercialized, and then I wouldn’t have a hobby anymore

I think the community is what makes things exciting. Not corporate sponsors, and bullshit big prize money. The drive people have to travel around and fight the best of the best out there isn’t because of the prospect of making money. It’s because of the thirst people have to become the best they can. At least that’s how I see it. I don’t speak for wong or anyone else, but I’d like to think it’s more than just money that motivates them to get to the level they are at.

how does a game deserve sponsors?

Japanese gamers don’t make money off tournaments. That’s another reason why there tends to be more character variety over there. There isn’t $500 on the line if you lose.

Yup. People think ‘oh I can make money playing games = good’. The whole esports thing ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. I have a feeling that if Evo or the tournament scene in America changed to a 100% esports-style format similar to what some PC games have in Europe, 99% of the current community, especially people that have been around for the last few years, would absolutely hate it. From what I’ve seen, the sports scene is basically anti-hype. The combination of like 99% white ppl + unhype crowds + overbearing corporate involvement really adds up to what seems to me like a very soulless scene.

Then again, maybe the fighting game community in the US, if given the opportunity, could ‘show them how it’s done’, but I dunno. Is it the games, or the way the events are organized, or the people and players themselves that makes an event what it is? I’d like to think if companies and sponsors became majorly involved with Evo or other tournaments, that the players could still override that atmosphere and show the soul of the scene. It’s just a very different world for whatever reason. I remember on Alpha-ISM Bunkei had one of the Cannons on (sorry I can’t remember who it was!), and he had a little anecdote from the year they teamed up with the MLG. Paraphrasing, he and the Evo staff were telling the MLG to finish up in one area because they had to make space and set up for finals on the big screen. The MLG guy said to them “Why? Nobody watches the finals.”.

BTW, watch the documentary ‘Frag’.

If I were them I would open up a Arcade in a popular area. I would be able to play/practice all day , play others for money, hold tournaments, and with all the play time I would get enough practice and skill to go to big events.

Yeah, Loads of Guys at MLG Drop out of School and try ***fucking hard *** to Make a living out of Games, They’re ganna end up never getting another job in their Life. (Assuming They’ll end up Being Whack and Have to Quit the Gaming)

Im pretty sure the only guy who dropped out was T2, and hes doing very well considering hes on the cover of Dr. Pepper bottles. Most MLG players still go to school and make good money. MLG is where the money is at.

Same reason that Sports players get sponsorships…

They have enough fans and a company sees that that player or team would be good for advertising because they can target the people they want, which would be sf players or any sports players.

Lol, I meant the fans… But with T2 it’s cool Because He Actually DOES get the Money but What about the kids who wants to Follow his footsteps that don’t have half the skill he has?
They’re Screwed, With "I dropped out of school to play games for a Living " on their CV.

Oh, enough people in sports sufer that fate. There are legions of would be Federers and Nadals who never make it, though normally people don’t drop out of school for that.

Yeah I know what makes companies want to sponsor events, but I don’t think anyone on here, who doesn’t have the capital to be a sponsor, can really say whether a certain activity deserves sponsorships.

To clarify, I don’t necessarily think chasing big dreams is a bad idea, but you have to be smart about it. If you are going to risk it all to pursue your dream, you better make damn sure if you do everything right, there is money that will be worth the effort. All these stupid pro gaming circuits have never even turned a profit. Do you think half as many people would be busting their ass to join the NBA if it in danger of folding right now?

The truth.

Regardless though, if you’re trying to enter the realm of professional sports, it would be wise to gain or have a second skill. The gravy train doesn’t last forever. The smart, retired professional players know this, and so a lot of them end up becoming businessmen. Investing, creating or acquiring businesses with the wealth that they’ve earned while being athletes.

Don’t forget… theres always one character in Street Fighter tourney’s that has the last laugh…

cough Uncle Sam…

… just took half that. I see being a Pro Gamer as decent side work though.

big market?
