PowerUp 2011 - EVO 2011 Tournament Season Qualifier - Cincinnati, OH - April 29-May 1

Thanks for repping the avatars Phil! I’ll make sure to get the T6 section updated and completed ASAP. The couple up right now were more tests than anything, so the way I positioned the characters may change.

Nathan: am I allowed to be humbled by your mother and gdlk chinese food again?

The irony is the two characters available are the ones I use.

I really dig the BB: CS ones… Noel looks especially awesome.

Web: you going to run Raging Storm Ohio again?

pP

Definitely!

You are more than welcome, Webster!

Oh man so exciting, mind as well add Raging Storm Ohio to the first post (details to come of course). Cuz it’ll be there more furious than ever.

OP updated with a revamp of the PowerUp Bonus Structure and how we’ll be doing payout. This is all going off of a $10 entry fee per game. Raising the stakes to $15 or more would not affect how we’ll do Top 5 or Top 8 payout, unless we’re talking a truly high stakes tournament with entry at $25 or more.

Basically, Top 5 and Top 8 payouts are used only when certain numbers of entrants are reached and not determined by increasing entry fee. The PowerUp Bonus Structure is there to make up for the losses that 1st Place will incur as a result of us paying out to more people at Top 5 and Top 8, since 1st Place is the only one taking a percentage cut.

I still think that $15 entry for a game could be something to experiment with.

Yo, Nathan. A couple things right on the heels of SB.

  1. GG and BB stream whores were mad salty about the streams being nothing but SF4 and Marvel (mostly). Now I don’t have a problem with this and Ghaleon and Fugee et all did an awesome job managing the resources they had, and gave GG/BB communities way more than they owed them. However, I think it would be a good idea to get a stream schedule figured out, dedicating chunks of time to various games, and leaving it up to the communities to be where they’re supposed to be at the scheduled time. For example, GG is supposed to start at 2 or something, and they get stream time from 6-7. Now they have 4 hours to run through the tournament, and wherever they happen to be at 6, that’s when they get on the stream. If they’re close to finals, great. If not, tough. You get as many matches as you can with the time you’re allotted on the stream. You can even opt to use the time slot for exhibition matches if nothing else. Obviously, Marvel 3 and SF4 will probably take precedence and go last, but I don’t see any reason why something like this can not be arranged. Also, keep in mind the time it takes to set up another system/game on the stream, and allow time for that between games.

  2. Also, since you asked me about what you could do for GG, I’ve given it a little thought, and here’s what I got so far. I don’t know how everyone else felt, but I had an awesome time with GG teams. Something like this will depend on turnout, but I’d love to have another team tourney for GG, and also if character representation is varied enough (it won’t be) a 23 on 23 of some sort with all characters represented in 2 teams would be amazing (this won’t happen, but it would be the most hype US GG has ever seen if it did). Failing that, maybe a large team vs team exhibition might work, or something like 5v5 states/regions like we did SF4 last year. Failing that, and this is going back to streams, once we get an idea who is coming, have people vote on MMs or exhibition matches they want to see, and stream those. Maybe even for any game, have people vote for matches they want to see, and PU takes highest voted match/matches for each game and pays to the winner costing nothing out of pocket for the participants. Maybe that’s a dumb idea, and maybe you want to save all the bonus money for tourney pot bonuses, but that’s just something I’ve thought of.

  3. Is there any difference in whether a game is a side tourney or not? Will it hurt to give GG the dignity of being nominally a main tourney?

  4. Add AH3 that game is going to be good and it’s your chance to hold one of the first AH3 tournaments in the US.

Yo Matt, I just skimmed your post and it sounds like some amazing stuff.

I will either fully reply here later when I’ve got more time or just talk with you in person.

Anyway, quick notes:

*Gotta wait to see if AH3 has a U.S. release.
*GG events sound too damn hype!!
*GG can probably be a main tournament. Side or main, to me, is just in name only especially when the game draws over 20 or so people.
*Behind the scenes I already have stream schedules in mind and will make sure that every game on the PU2011 lineup will get its due time. SSFIV and even MvC3 will not hog the stream. I personally pride myself and give a big thanks to Brent for making the PU2010 stream extremely varied when compared to a lot of what’s out there. I mean, we streamed KOF98! XD
But yeah, no worries on the stream variety, we’re gonna do it even better for PU2011.

Yeah, will wait for a longer reply, but AH3 can most likely be played on a US PS3 without a US release, so I think at least saying that it will be there in some form is safe. Are there any PS3 games that are region locked? MB is not released in US and people play it. I think announcing Arcana can get you some early support.

Okay, longer reply time!

Ah yes, I forgot that the PS3 is not region specific! Now I’m more hype for AH3. I think it is definitely a game to consider for PU2011. Off the top of your head, what kind of numbers do you think it could get? Probably at least as many as MBAA, right?

On to the stream.

I want to focus on events, exhibitions, and tournament winners, losers, and grand finals. To be honest I don’t believe that early bracket play is very interesting so I don’t want to see much of it on stream if it can be helped. However, as a backup plan I would like to dedicate chunks of time over the weekend to specific games. The goal is to keep the stream filler-free. Only the most hype stuff should be on. I also want there to be at least two people dedicated to helping Brent with the stream.

Events will require special planning with each game’s players because I will need them to be there and ready to go for special exhibition events and money matches. The best case scenario is that I can have a stream schedule with back to back events, hopefully on the same system for more than just a couple matches in a row. Once a winners/losers/grand finals set is up then we stop exhibitions and move to that game until it’s done. Then we move back to exhibitions until the main event or another winners/losers/grand.

During down time between switching out systems I’d like to have someone on stream from the upcoming game there to get the interest going.

Basically I need responsible people running every bracket who will tell me when their finals are coming up. Sometimes people are going to have to wait until we can finish something, but I want it to be a serious goal of PU2011 to deliver on stream variety and quality.

Here’s an example of Saturday at PU2011 on the stream:

Example Stream Schedule

[details=Spoiler]12pm: Stream starts up
12:15 - 1:15: SSFIV exhibition money matches or “pride” matches
1:25 - 2:25: BBCS exhibitions
2:35 - 3:35: AH3 exhibitions
3:45 - 4:45: HDR exhibitions
4:55 - 5:55: GGAC exhibitions
6:05 - 7:05: 3S exhibitions
7:15 - 8:30: Main Event
8:40 - 9:40: KOF98UM exhibitions
9:50 - 10:50: KOF2k2UM exhibitions
10:50 - close: random stuff, spare time already taken up by finals, etc, etc

This is just an example, but it gets across what I’d like to do. Imagine time being eaten up by winners/losers/grand finals for the various games and the whole day will probably get filled out. And then, if all else fails, fall back on the bracket matches with a schedule reflecting blocks of time dedicated to certain games. All games would receive time.[/details]

From what I see you said about GG exhibition events, those are exactly the types of things I want to be organized at PU2011. I don’t want it to just happen if it happens, I want it to be almost certain, and planned out beforehand with the players.

That said, having players vote on events at PU2011 is a really cool idea and works with the random hype that can happen at tournaments. Taking advantage of that would be awesome.

The bottom line is that I need to be more proactive in the months leading up to PU2011 so I can get special events in a wide variety of games. I need to work with the players from the scene and see what they think is a great event for their game and if they are willing to help plan it. Work those exhibitions in with on site voted matches, and any other randomly hype stuff for a game, and I think every game will get its adequate time on stream.

Sounds like you’ve given a lot of thought to streams. I really don’t know how to get the ball rolling on exhibition stuff this early in the planning phase, but those ideas are about the most hype I could possibly think of. Maybe I’ll get on dustloop and kick some ideas around a little.

As for Arcana, it’s really hard to say for sure. I think Melty Blood numbers are a good estimate, but you got people like me and Keith who don’t really play MB, but liked the first AH and are interested in 3. I think Adam even finally played the first one with Keith and enjoyed it. Once you get past the loli *** facade and into the unique mechanics of the game, you realize it’s a decent game. But there are a lot of games coming out and everybody probably can’t afford to enter everything, so if you someone has to choose between entering Marvel 3, SF4, KoFXIII (if it’s out), and AH3, who knows which one they’ll go with.

All I can say is it might be a good idea to give AH3 a nod before other TO’s start thinking about it to see what kind of hype you can generate. Only thing is it may be hard to generate events in this game as nobody knows who is good at a game that isn’t even out yet.

Edit: posted my GG ideas on dustloop. Nobody cares yet. Guess we have to wait a bit.

AH3 has been added as a side tournament, as well as MBAA, KOF98:UM, KOF2k2:UM, and KOFXIII.

And big changes to the venue fee. First, there are no more 1-day passes.

Pre-registering will get you the whole weekend for $20, and for spectators/casuals only it will be pre-registration of $5.

If you walk-up during the weekend to register, it will be $30 for the whole weekend, and for spectators/casuals only it will be registration of $10.

The reasoning behind this is to encourage pre-registration so that we can organize brackets before the event. This makes the tournament run smoother for you, the players.

Also, a couple comments/questions:

Should our 3S event be a 3S 2v2 instead of singles? Or even a 3v3?

And, if anyone thinks that the current tentative schedule is bad for your players please speak up and we’ll see what can be done.

I had a really good time at this. I might make my way out.

Those last few weeks of UFGT planning and preparation will be hectic I bet, but yeah, hopefully you can make it down to PowerUp : )

And remember, no chair nazis XD

Teams for 3s would be cool. Either 2v2 or 3v3.

Edit: NVM Brent told me and hes a Ass lol

like i said at SB Nate man i say we have another MW SSF4 5v5 event… this time with a legit wildcard team from wherever organized by whoever… and if MvC3 gets dropped before PU2k11 then of course you gotta run that… I’ll be at AL later this month to check out the new digs… looks like next May is gonna be gridlocked

I’m confrimed to show.

Ohio is gonna be pretty dark for 72 hours during this weekend.
