I’ll pursue this more after SB this year, but suggestions on special events to be held at PU2011 are welcome from anyone! Can’t promise we’ll follow through on every idea, but we will take each one posted in this thread into consideration. Rest assured that we’ve been brainstorming too in order to bring some hype events to PU2011.
Hey fellas, I’ll run MK if you’d like. Just let me know! (cuz yes i will be there, pre EVO baby!)
Sweet! Even though I enjoyed CBB3, I’m much happier driving 5 minutes to Cincy. Can’t wait :D.
Alright! Sounds good. That beastly setup at Bar Battles plus Jesse’s cab would give us two potential UMK3 setups. Any special events you think would be cool at PU2011? I’m sure they’ll be some grudges to settle after SB:R.
I’ll see about bringing my cab too. But yea we’ll see. Might be the first real MK9 tourney I’ll be apart of so that should be interesting too. But we’ll talk and figure stuff out. Got some time to figure it out :wgrin:
After speaking with Wes Truelson from Minnesota for the PowerUp Podcast I’d like to ask the following question:
What is everyone’s opinion on increasing entry fees in order to pay out to more than just top 3?
Here’s an example -
$10 per player @ 80 players = $800
1st Place 70% = $560
2nd Place 20% = $160
3rd Place 10% = $80
$20 per player @ 80 players = $1600
1st Place 45% = $720
2nd Place 20% = $320
3rd Place 10% = $160
4th - 8th Place 5% = $80 each
As Wes says in our podcast this kind of structure rewards players who finish in the upper ranks but can’t seem to quite break that top 3 barrier. I think it’s an idea I’d like to try for PowerUp 2011, and would love some feedback from the players who this kind of change would affect most.
I think there should be top 5 payout these days however that can get done. $15 entry maybe and change the split? I think 70/20/10 needs to go.
why top 5? I dont even think 3rd place should get payout imo
what – compare gaming to golf/poker/tennis – if it’s ever going to grow more people need to get paid for performance. Do you think any sport could survive if two people get prizes?
Absolutely the future of fighting games needs to go beyond Top 3 payouts
I was thinking that $15 could be a good compromise, and then, yes, pay out to top 5 rather than top 8.
Maybe something like -
$15 per player @ 80 players = $1200
1st Place 55% = $660
2nd Place 20% = $240
3rd Place 15% = $180
4th - 5th Place 5% = $60 each
Something else Wes pointed out is that it’s not really about the money, not completely. The higher entry and bigger/more spread out payouts is something that could potentially bring out more quality players. So while the money is an incentive, it’s working for the scene rather than against it.
Also, I think this would only work with the big turnout games like SSFIV, and probably MvC3. Perhaps games like T6 and BB:CS could see this kind of payout, but to tell the MB:AA players that it’s $15 per person for a ten man tourney; I’m not sure if they’d be keen on the idea even if payout gets spread out more.
EDIT: You know, maybe putting 1st Place at 60% is the best solution, while keeping 2nd and 3rd at 20% and 10%. That way the extra 10% can get split between 4th and 5th. With $5 more entry, that’s not too big a change to turn many people off from coming to an event. At least, it wouldn’t turn me off XD
It’s kind of funny how all this pot split for winnings in tournaments is coming up. Phil & I were talking about this stuff as well as of recently, along side how sets in tournament matches are to be ran as well. These bring up a lot of questions & disscussions on these matters. Any opinions on this stuff my peeps?
Obviously my thoughts on the subject of entrance fees and payout are already well documented here but I wanted to also make the point that I think higher entrance fees may not only bring out more quality players, it may bring out more players all together. Getting top 3 in a tournament seems unfathomable to many players (especially noobs), top 5-8 seems possible to most players.
You could put a poll on this thread to see what players think for the entrance fee and payout structure. I would think 3 choices could be:
$10 - 60/30/10 (top 3)
$15 - 50/25/10/5/5/5 (top 5)
$20 - 45/20/10/7/5/5/4/4 (top 8)
Most of us that travel to tournaments spend a lot of money to travel, eat, and, stay. What’s $10 more dollars in the grand scheme of the things to have a better chance to have a payday to offset some the costs (not even make a profit) and make sure the top talent gets their fight money.
Just a thought to get the playaz feedback-
-wes
yea good point. i was just wondering.
Just put up the poll on this issue. Vote now or forever hold your peace.
Remember too that this payout structure will probably not be for every game at PU2011. That’s for a whole other poll! XD
The PowerUp 2011 Avatar Pack Design #1 is in the works and will be available for download soon. This is the first of three avatar designs that will be coming to all you fine folks who love you some PowerUp
Like the one used at the last naptown (think it was tourny makes 2.1) you can either display almost the entire bracket with a big enough screen or even better show what current matchups need to be played. I like the latter for these reasons:
(now this is just with tournymaker 2.0/1).
The operator selects however many matches he can run at once (how many tvs for example) and clicks them as IN PROGRESS which BOLDS then on the screen. It is also good to call out all the matches with some kinda of loud speaker and frequently remind people to be checking the screen to see if their match is bolded which means they have to play. The operator will need assistants to keep track of whats open but honestly if you always have the amount of matches called equal to how many TVs are being used for the game you will know if people are playing.
I used this for a bit at Naptown and it ran very well until I had to play in other games (as well as others) and slowed it down but it still ran well.
What is also nice about using this feature is that it balances out when losers matches and winners matchups are played so people dont complain about long wait times.

Looks like we have a tie between 70/20/30 @ $10 per player and 60/20/10/5/5 @ $15 per player. I feel like some clarification would be good. PU2011 would probably only pay out top 5 to either a game and community that asks for it, or big, huge turnout games like SSFIV and eventually MvC3 (it’d be funny if it busts, but I doubt it).
So with that in mind, we could pay out to Top 5 for games like GGAC if the players wanted it, but probably not to MBAA (for example). And then we’d definitely do the Top 5 payout for SSFIV. Still plenty of time, so think it over real hard like
Talked over the $15 entry fee with Jesse, and I agree with him that $15 could put off local beginning or inexperienced players from coming out to compete. I agree with Wes that a higher entry fee could bring out more quality competition, but I guess I’m unsure about the incentive of top 5 payout being enough to bring out more players period.
Further discussion and opinions would be great, and Jesse and I kicked around the idea of $10 entry at a 50/20/10/8/6/6 payout scale for top 5 (where if two players tie for 5th place they’d both receive 6%). The trade off in 1st Place cut would be offset partially by the PowerUp Bonus Structure. This means the top 5 payout would only apply to tournaments with 25 entrants or more. If Top 5 payout is something to try, I think this may be a good way to test the waters. It’s a sacrifice for 1st Place, but I think the benefits of being able to pay out to more people would outweigh negatives.
Anyway, on to something a bit more fun : )
Remember that suggestions for PU2011 special events are still wide open. So if you’ve got what you believe is a great idea, let us know here in the thread!
PowerUp 2011 Avatar Pack Design #1 has been released! Remember that if you don’t like this design that we’ve got two more chances to impress you, with two totally different designs, before PU2011.
For now, though, enjoy Design #1. It is still a WIP as far as completing all characters, but you get the idea : )
I voted for top 5 pay out, I see it as more incentive to enter.
BTW I know me and Sluch will be down to run T6 again.
I’m also rocking a new PU 2011 Avatar every week… why? Cause they are awesome! Nice work Nathan.
