Watch Jeopardy (Zero/Nova/Iron Man) play if you want to see how Nova 2nd works. He can actually get work done in higher levels of XF, he’s really fast, does insane damage for almost no effort, and can eat zoning characters alive.
However I personally think both of those teams are pretty whack and don’t get enough done for Zero or Nova, and have subpar anchors in back. It’s not in Zero’s interest to TAC infinite, and the only thing he really gets out of Nova is Sougenmu unblockables, which can be pushblocked pretty easily. I like Nova 2nd or even 3rd, but he has to offer a lot to the point character to justify putting him there IMO.
You could probably do something like 6H, back dash/call Jam and 5L for the reset, I think that is impossible to tech forward out of but they might be able to tech back without getting into blockstun. But still not a favorable situation for them.
You can do both of novas standard resets to ensure blocked jam.
nova slam, cr.m + call jam, fly, grab, if they tech the grab they land in js for 50/50.
normally you want to nova slam, backdash, centrush l + assist(catches all techs) , but im not sure on a backtech you’d be protected. insteas you want to nova slam, slightly walk back, call jam, airdash back j.h to catch back tech which pushes them into js. if they neutral or back tech they’re already blocking jam.
So… After all my talking down Nova/Strange/Ammy, I decided to go back and try it out after my friend showed me how ridiculous Nova/Bolts is in some matchups. This team is godlike, it just took me getting a hang of Strange to realize it.
I’ll almost certainly play it at Black Eye next time I go so stay tuned true believers.
PS the Cold Star crumple hard tag combo isn’t that hard and kills basically everyone after a dhc but midscreen FOF is SO FUCKING HARD jesus
Yeah everything is always archived. Especially hype sets/matches get put on youtube!
Don’t get me wrong, the team still has one glaring flaw that Nova/Doom/Ammy also has, but it’s much more noticeable on this team: general damage output off a clean hit. And throws. I reset people a lot anyway so it’s not that much of a change, and non-infinite TAC’s tend to be pretty easy with Strange and do 1.1mil-ish after a DHC. But sometimes off certain conversions it’s like “oh god I won’t even kill Zero off this.” But it makes up for it in neutral.
Actually resets and TAC’s help the team build a lot of meter, which as you know makes these already strong characters really scary.
As for what matchup advantages this team has over Nova/Doom/Ammy:
*Magneto. Doesn’t matter what assist he has it will get blown up by Bolts/shield. Not that this is necessarily a bad matchup on its own but it’s pretty free with Bolts.
*Anyone who can’t duck Bolts. Can’t wait to try this against Abegen…
*Zoning shells like Dorm/Doom. Nova can handle these guys no problem but Doom/Ammy (really just Doom) tend to have trouble. Not so with Strange/Ammy! Just having the advantage against Hawkeye is great… Morrigan is a little rough if the Morrigan knows to go on the offensive sometimes, but it still blows up Missiles pretty well.
*Nova/Plasma Beam. Not a huge advantage but much better than the mirror IMO.
Against heavy rushdown, Zero, and teams sitting on Log Trap assist though, gimme Plasma Beam any day. There’s some middle ground like against a player here who runs Zero/Doom missiles/Hawkguy… I will try Bolts against him but that will probably mean fighting the Zero match the honest way which kinda sucks, but since the Strange/Ammy backload runs train on Doom/Hawkeye…
ANWYAY, enough talking this shit up, from now, exhibition. Then, results.
Team sounds hot but what I am not so sure on is the Strange/Ammy shell… I just don’t see how Cold Star benefits Strange all that much. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
Nothing about Strange makes sense right off the bat, he’s not very intuitive. You really have to get creative… or just lurk the Strange forums and pick the brains of Strange players. He may not have high-lows to take advantage of Cold Star but he can utilize its blockstun well.
Cold Star + Mystic Sword M is guaranteed to get someone in Cold Star blockstun almost anywhere. This gives you more than enough time to set up an Eye, or to put out a grace, get to super jump height and put a grace, FOF into mixup, if they block then rinse and repeat. It’s much stronger mid-screen since it gives you access to really fast left-rights. In the corner however you can use the blockstun to put up a red grace which allows for better mixup options (as in this video).
But the real nonsense is the team super hahaha.
Oh, and Ammy with Bolts is silly too. Better DHC synergy than with Doom as well.
I like Strange as a character and would probably drop Doom if there was a way to get him in after airthrows or to just set up FOF loops. Bolts are busted for Nova, but beam has its advantages over it.
N.B. This is corner only. You can push them to the corner from midscreen(Where the 99second fight begins). Just wavedash 3x before crumple and 1/2 one after crumple. For midscreen, midscreen FOF will be required but very tricky. From corner throws
Thanks for those resources dood, I actually hadn’t seen those Ammy -> Strange videos and was wondering about the BNB into loops.
As for the Disco special one… the confirm after the tag is a little different with Cold Star due to different hitstun. It also seems to be character and screen specific. Hard to say when you want to do 5M6HS, 5MS, 6HS, 5MH6HS, 5MHS, 5M6H xx Mystic Sword 6HS, and that’ll take some lab time for sure.
when you tag, strange is very close to the opponent
so a move to space the two is necessary
fof or mystic
I’ve used fof but it’s finnicky
at times they will flip before the fof hits them
I’ve actually tried practicing the corner throw M Rocket Punch into raw tag junk and it was kinda finnicky. Also I do not like the DHC from Nova into Strange at all. It was really hard to link the jab after.
I would love to run Nova Spencer Taskmaster as Spencer and Taskmaster are my favorite characters in this game… But god damn man… Taskmaster’s arrows come out so slow. I find it insanely difficult to get his arrows in play where they will actually be a factor. He either gets stuffed by faster beams, or I get rushed down so either I’m fighting without an assist or I get Happy Birthday’ed. Really don’t wanna use Doom but this is crazy. Can use Hawkeye too but then that team won’t be able to kill so well. Shit sucks.
Play Nova Task Spencer. It’s my team. Arrows arent as OD as Plasma Beam, but they’re still good. Watch some of Moons’s old footage to get an idea of how to play with Arrows.
