That isn’t greedy. That’s marvel
Yeah, that’s the biggest weakness that Nova/Strange/Ammy has. No rawtag from airthrows + low damage, unless there’s a way to rawtag Strange do call cold star, spell of vishanti, and somehow the Cold Star lets you combo from it. Though I doubt this is possible. You do, however, get Cold Star for resets which is pretty amazing for that.
Nah I tried that, it sadly doesn’t work. Strange can use their THC to combo off of throws without XF tho.
But the lack of air throw tags and consistent Cold Star crumple damage mid-screen gimps the team. Also as much as we might like to think otherwise Strange/Ammy is not as good as Doom/Ammy.
If you have two bars, you can probably rawtag Strange and team super or do the whiff Speed Tackle glitch to get loops in, but you need 2 bars. You’ll build it back up though because Strange builds meter like a motherfucker.
Strange/Ammy has advantages over Doom/Ammy.
- Midscreen teamsuper mixups are much more powerful. He can’t teleport in the corner, but eventually they need to leave it.
- Bolts are ridiculous for Nova. So is Plasma Beam, but bolts has the advantage of being so much more oppressive. Plasma Beam is easier to use, however, and hits most crouching opponents.
- Strange destroys Doom. So if you’re fighting a Doom based team, you’ll have the matchup advantage.
- SOV DHC is really powerful, but it’s also kinda whack since it isn’t safe.
- BOLTS are seriously amazing for Nova.
Doom does have the stronger TAC options, is easier to play, rawtag options, and Plasma Beam is easier to confirm Cent Rush.
Both can work, but Doom will likely be the easier and possibly better option, but it depends on how good Bolts really is for Nova.
Don’t crush my dreams :’(
The only thing I like is that they win over both zoning and weak-to-zoning teams. But there are major issues.
- Strange works best with a get-off-me assist IMO, like Jam. Cold Star doesn’t do work until he’s established some presence, which is not hard to do but it won’t bail him out of bad matchups.
- The incentive to burn XF with Strange is too great. If you spend it on their THC, it won’t be an effective mixup tool afterward, making it a pretty bad incoming blender unlike Doom/Ammy. Things can go pear-shaped afterward and may leave Ammy with a bad look. That said Ammy with Bolts has more depth than Plasma.
- THAT said, Ammy/Doom gives Ammy the option of TAC’s to kill.
- My Strange is fucking garbage lol
Lastly, I like Plasma Beam better for Nova for all the reasons you listed. This is huge. Bolts is great but it won’t bail you out like Plasma sometimes can. Strange is mad punishable and it frustrates me. I’ve found ways to exploit it against other Nova/Strange players and have started taking a lot of games off Nemo as a result. Have had to play two other players running Nova/Strange in tourney and bodied both of them.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Bolts are great for Nova, but they don’t leave room for error. No matter how good you are, bad assist calls happen, and Strange is SO vulnerable for that, especially in the Nova mirror. Trying to keep the calls safe with shield/javelin? Hold this speed tackle. Every other case I’ve exploited with sj height ADD(F) H. So many happy birthdays.
Since you posted the videos for Nova Force DHC to Sphere Flame whiff I’ve had next to no desire to play Nova/Strange. Again, some of this is bias from me sucking absolute ass with the character, but.
I think Nova/Strange/Jam Session sounds pretty boss tbh. Doesn’t Jam Session allow combos off SoV? And you get raw tags now, not great ones but workable.
I actually consider this team, as for now I run them with Wesker on point (Dante/Strange order though). And I did tried Nova in various shells, the closest is probably Nova/IM/Dante (who asked for great beam AND tacs?). But I got tired of playing 2 characters and combo in a team. (although the tac infinities are fun, still I don’t think i ever finished one in a match).
Btw, can you elaborate a little more about that Jam Session allowing combos of SoV?
btw2 @discovigilante how often do you play Nemo?
I run into him at BlackEye every other week or so. This year I’ve probably played him in two BlackEye sets (30 games apiece) and one short set at GCUP (4/5 games). It’s not even or anything but I’m starting to turn it up. There is a saying here though; if you play with Nemo often enough, there is no way you’ll lose to any random person running his team. So far that’s proven true for a lot of different people, amazingly.
I kind of like the idea of Nova/Strange/Dante. Haven’t revisited Nova/Jam in a while but I think it’s probably better than I’m remembering it.
I take it you live in Japan?
I don’t play Strange, but I could have sworn you could do Jam > SoV > teleport > IP and continue from there, or something…
I think there’s a vid lying around somewhere, I’ll try to find it later.
Yeah, I might have just imagined that. >_> I don’t know.
Disco, it’s good to hear that you’re starting to understand the weaknesses of Nova/Bolts but many things you said are direct counters with your own team Nova/Plasma. Not everyone runs a team that will have a strong beam like that or even play Nova in general. We have to think of team building in overall matchups. Beam is good against Bolts, but Bolts poop on Missiles. Obviously people shouldn’t be doing Javelin willy nilly in a Nova Mirror. You want to Speed Tackle? Eat my snapback. Bad assist calls shouldn’t be a factor of deciding teams and for good players, should only happen once every 5 matches or even more.
In this case you seem to be more concerned about immediate presence of control and having assist calls be safe which is what Plasma does. It also lasts kinda short so it provides less control and easier maneuvering around it. Bolts also give you an amazing amount of time to hit confirm if you snipe them from afar. Once you learn Strange man everything changes. Playing Nova/Strange just means Bolts are so good you’ll never have to play Strange to begin with. Hopefully.
Yep
Yeah I guess I let my bias towards certain matchups dictate how strong I think something is overall. For instance I think Shuma anchor for instance is absolute garbage because Ammy bodies him, but it’s clear he can do work as a dark char. I know bolts is good for Nova but in my case I can see its weaknesses quite clearly. Wesker with Disruptor gives them a lot of trouble too (see: Capcom Cup).
Oh and I didn’t know about snap back beating speed tackle. You have done me a great service today sir.
Man that stinks. I like leaving Doom in for the mixup and fatty damage sometimes. I don’t mind getting stuck with Nova/Ammy either. Veil combos!
Yeah I play against Bolts weekly at school (Spencer/Doom/Strange to be specific) and once you play against Bolts enough and get blown up, you see its weaknesses. With my main team (Nova Taskmaster), I just counter call with Task and his arrows will go under and snipe Strange. With my 2ndary (Nova Doom), I used to have my calls beat out by Strange but then I realized I can just call Doom in between bolts.
In a nutshell, I feel like Beam just has most utility for Nova. Bolts provides better offense but Plasma has better defensive capabilities.
If I already have bolts, weasel or jam?
Jam.
Thanks, any reasoning for that?
I’d say Jam only because Strange uses Jam really well. It’s one of his best assists and since you already have Bolts, you might as well get Jam Session for it’s pretty good Nova extensions.
Weasel Shot is the better assist for Nova’s neutral though! I miss it sometimes. ;_;
I found it quite hard to do 6H + Jam, 623+M. Or quite strict anyhow, is there anything else to it?
