Power of Who? - The new Nova Team Building Thread

Here’s an unexpected twist: did my nova combo, rapid slash extension, potnf xx dhc swords… and you can’t call nova during!! The game won’t let you! I imagine its because the combo already has an M rush in it? But not as an assist. Without that extension you can swords and call it, but with… doesn’t let you! Quite bizarre!

The good news tho is it turns out 2 lunars + nova assist does more dmg than 2 helms and lunar, so the combo still does a bit more dmg lol

Can’t call the assist 1 slot twice in a combo.

Yeah, I explained that when I talked about omitting rapid slash extensions…

Thanks Duke! Seems kinda silly, but oh well.

Disco, sorry I honestly don’t recall ur mentioning the button property. Without that extention, the ground bounce isn’t really an issue anyway.

Something I’ve been messing with Plasma beam is calling it and doing the OS grab wave dash across the screen. If you do it fast enough you can grab them from full screen away right before plasma beam puts them in block stun if not just go for your regular mix up.

What’s a good team with Nova/Spencer? Obviously there’s Strange, but I don’t like his character all that much. I feel like for Nova you need a good lockdown assist (bolts/coldstar/the dante gun thing, etc)…is there anyone else that works good with these two, or should I just play Strange?

EDIT: and i’d rather not have Doom. That character is lame lol

Hawkeye and Sentinel are both proven winners. Taskmaster also works well though his comeback ability is not as good. If you want a really good assist in a really underwhelming anchor, Iron Man is your choice!

Where is the OS? Like, is it that the beam allows a mix up? Or are you saying there’s an OS in the wavedash inputs?

The only OS in MvC3 is :f:/:b:+:h: where it chooses to be a j.:h: or throw

the OS comes from wave dashing fwd. Instead of just dash down dash down, you can do fwd+dash because it does the same thing

Ok. Just seems like fwd+H isn’t really the kinda normal ud want to OS with, but if its fwd+DASH that could also be a throw, that makes sense.

Not sure if that’s a joke, but this is not true at all.

The OS is in the wavedash since if they get inside your throw range you get a grab. The way I do it is (forward, plink H+M, down-forward, repeat) its true that if you’re not careful you’ll get that shitty overhead but once you practice enough it you shouldn’t be getting it.

You could try Tasky or IM, as far as I recall Vergil really likes Tasky’s arrows, but as far as raw tag combos go IM is nearly as good as Doom, his beam leaves opponents standing (so do Tasky’s arrows btw) and he doesnt use up either ground or wall bounce, of course the main issue is that on their own they are both worst characters than Doom, or Dante for that matter, but if preserving the bounces and holding them in place are that important for you then either of those two could suit your needs, at the cost of a good anchor. I dont feel neither Doom or Dante are that great as anchors themselves though, so the tradeoff may not be as bad, depending on how much you mind the c.M under beam.

Strange is the best option, ok anchor, great assist for both Nova and Spencer, fof loops, Doom would be the second best option imo, but if you dont like either I think Sentinel, Iron Man and Taskmaster are all tied for third place. Taskly is probably the best character of the three, but none is a good anchor, theyre all pretty good assists though, and IM offers raw tags+tac infinite too, not sure about sentinel though. Hawkeye and Dante are also options, but I feel Hawkeyes arrows are too fast and Dante lacks full horizontal coverage.

So, I’ve been running Nova/Doom/Strider or Nova/Doom/Ammy, but I’ve been trying to mess with Nova/Vergil and was wondering what anyone thinks the better anchor for Nova/Vergil is between Strider and Ammy. I kind of like the Vergil/Strider shell, but would Ammy benefit the team more overall?

Strider would be better since it provides coverage for Nova, a beam or arrows would be really good too. Ammy is lockdown, doesn’t really let Nova move about freely, also doesn’t hit fast enough for Vergil teleport mixups.

I play Nova/Doom/Ammy and counterpick with Nova/Doom/Strider in certain matchups where Cold Star or Ammy (or both, sup ZMC) are not as useful. Nova/Vergil/Strider is probably better just because Vergil/Strider is such a derpy shell and proven to be very oppressive. Vergil with Ammy can be good, but I feel like it’s better when he’s on point and also has a neutral assist backing him up (i.e. Vergil/Doom/Ammy).

I’ve been running nothing but nova vergil, and trying to find my anchor (thanks ewig! Have a response to that, see below, but not gonna put it here). While nova ammy and nova strider are both good, nova really wants a horizontal assist, and rapid slash ain’t it. Like, each of those duos are great in a vaccum, but both teams rob nova of a horizontal. Of the two, strider is prob best, just be wary as having vajra as your “only” assist will color ur strategy big time. Both teams could work, but novas gonna have to work hard, and so will vergil in the ammy version.

I’m choosing between plasma and hawk arrows. Iron man would be great, but I won’t play em, and task would be great, and I dig task, but sadly the new button config on my pad that makes my nova so dangerous made task unplayable. Waa waaa. Lol the ideas are correct though, and good, so for dominus, they should be strongly considered.

Not sure if that is the problem, but if the button configuration problem with Tasky is the super, you could try to set the two buttons you need to the right stick, is what I used to do when I played Tasky.

What do you guys think of this breakdown:

I reckon I must’ve missed some things so its still incomplete and there were some things I actually wasnt entirely certain of, hence the (?) next some points, but I figure it might be a good reference for any new user looking for a specific type of assist to complement a shell, so what do you guys think?

Edit: And done with the edits so far, still didnt add Shuma, no idea what to write about him, or Frank, since I felt he didnt exactly fit the bill as an “assist to complement a shell”, also my utter ignorance with RR and Modok kinda shows, so any further corrections are more than welcome. Other than that, what do you guys think?
