I came across this article and thought it might be worth a discussion:
Lab Zero Games, who developed Skullgirls, created a tool to allow generic USB controllers including PS3 Madcatz arcade sticks to work in their game on the PS4.
The best part is that they are offering this tool to other developers for free, and Madcatz are on board with the idea!
Personally I would love to see this implemented in SFV on the PS4 so I don’t have to buy any new sticks, and I don’t see any reason why Capcom wouldn’t implement it as long as they are aware of its existence.
If SFV doesnt have ps3 stick support, it would be purely at the fault of Capcom Lab Zero has openly said they have no problem letting other companies use the technology. …so if SFV doesnt support ps3 sticks, we will know for sure its cause Capcom or Sony are just greedy bastids
^ It’s a driver developed by a programmer working for Naughty Dog. It was made not only for Skullgirls but for any game that wants to have ps3 controller support.
The thing has no license at all, it’s free and anyone can use it.
If SFV will not have ps3 stick support there are some theories:
Capcom has a deal with PlayStation or Madcatz to not allow ps3 sticks so that they can sell exclusive SFV PS4 sticks
Capcom does not want to use Software made by someone else in their game and doesn’t have time/resources to make one themselves
I was planning on getting one of the new sticks anyways but I really hope this happens so everybody including myself can still use older sticks. Sales will still be through the roof for new sticks, but Capcom could show some appreciation to the fans and make this possible.
Does sony get a share in the sales of the sticks by any stick company? Because that would make old sticks working on a new console less likely. Since some of the sticks are licensed with Street Fighter, Capcom definitely gets a share of the sales. I don’t know. I’ll start to save money now, so I’ll be set for anything.
Honestly, adding the universal PS3 stick driver would be a boon for Sony if they want to get all the tournaments on board. This would do wonders for tournament logistics since peoples existing sticks would work.
If I know Madcatz, SF5 arcade sticks are right around the corner and if it means buying the official arcade for SF5 best believe its an instant pre-order for me.
I still have my PS3 arcade sick but its in its box, gonna have to get rid of it if madcatz does bring the SF5 sticks to go along with SF5 official release date whenever its announced.
I asked Mike Z, on the Rebel Up stream; about this exact question. He said the ps3 -> ps4 drivers are already completed and whoever wants to use it (game developers) are more than welcome to use it. However at the present time, no major companies have asked to use it, but there are quite a bit of indie developers who have asked already.
Times like this, I still wish that Sven (former Capcom SVP Christian Svensonn) was still at Capcom USA as I had a direct line to him and could easily pass along player concerns such as this to him (like I did with some issues with 3SOE).
Capcom will not use this. Capcom has Madcatz to make their official branded sticks. It is to the benefit of both companies for fans to buy a new stick then to hold on to their old one. There’s little profit to be made supporting this driver. Expect only for indies to use it.
