Recently I’ve just been obsessed with venturing different difficulties of art I had as a kid. Because I always “feared” drawing in a certain way, from a certain angle, or difficult parts of the body I realize I have so many half-pieces of art that went unfinished.
Now I cant be the only one who love-hates a certain aspect of drawing. Drawing people from the front angle. (Without photoshop or copy+mirror effect+paste.) It always stuns me how some people get so equal some times when my characters tend to have lazy eyes, severe atrophy in one arm, and limpsided smiles.
Does anyone else hate this too? Does anyone have tips in terms of drawing faces and different objects from the direct front where things should be equal?
Maybe its not so dynamic but I wouldnt say it boring. I have a deep respect for artist who choose to go with the dead on shots.
Also what order do you guys draw parts of the face when doing a straight forward shot?
I usually do nose first, right eye, then left eye, and mouth last. It works only ok (in the real sense of “ok” not like the people who say ok and it really means “very nice.”)
Dead on symmetry is boring but you shouldn’t shoot for a lopsided face either. Usually you want to turn the head just a little bit so it’s not a perfect mirror.
I actually find the straight forward shot the easiest since there’s no weird angles. The way I do it is, I draw the outline for the head loosely. Put in some shapes for the features in the order of eyes, nose, then mouth. Focus on the upper eyelids, the part on the nose where the planes change, and the corners of the mouth. Add more details for the features. Then finish with the hair, and the outline for the face. Draw the features first, then face so you don’t end up with a squished face.
I tend to draw heads dead on lately for the difficulty. Strangely enough the slight turn makes it much harder for me than a front, side, or 45 angle.
I like that technique Im about to try and maybe Ill post it up.
Question: How long does it take for you to finish a complete and detailed face (approximately) ? And no, you dont have to give me the deviantart answer “Well uhh I did this masterpiece artwork in like 7 mins…um for real…so that’ll make you like my art more.” You can be honest
