And considering the modern moe trend started only during the turn of the millennium (mostly after producers noticed the periphery male demographic around CCS), I’d say they predate moe.
He isn’t as deceiving as say, Bridget or Poison, who practically have to be researched to find out the truth, but a lot of people assume Ash to be a chick at first glance.
When I think of it, I’m pretty sure Amane from BB counts.
Yooo we cant leave out my favorite fg constant: The fatman!!!
Rufus (SF), Bob (Tekken), Puff (Smash), Juggernaut (XmvsSf), Mr. N (Divekick), Astaroth (SC)
Except the trope as it is didn’t exactly exist back then. Even a bit of casual research on the web will show that the trope started getting codified around the mid to late 90s with most ur-prototypical examples of the trope starting to appear then. Meanwhile, other tropes/archetypes in anime such as the pop idol and schoolgirl have been around longer and were well established tropes by 1986 when the original games first came out. More importantly, even Athena’s characterization is more around those same lines (she doesn’t really have the traditional *moekko[/i traits]). However, the issue is that it seems that SNK just took the modern moe trend and applied it to her (and Yuri) and made her look like something out of a KyoAni.
