First, if it’s “man up” please give people an estimate about when they’ll be up. Within an hour or two outside of which there’s no DQing. Some people (9 to 5ers, married guys) really aren’t used to the sleep deprived thing they should at least be able to take a nap. I know a) it’s not manly and b) impossible for a lot of people to put themselves in other peoples shoes but the level of play will be hurt if you make players wait up until 3:30a to play their matches.
Second, cancel third strike, marvel and hd remix. Use those tvs for SF4. Those three games are dead. The last few events I’ve been to in the northeast there’s been like no marvel, me playing hd against the computer and flare and therapist playing casuals against each other for hours on 3s. Dead. I’ve got an analogy: when Apple first came out with the iMac there was a lot of teeth gnashing about the lack of a floppy drive but it turns out that tech was dead. 3S, MvC2, ST = floppy discs.
Very yes. Also, regardless of which solution is ultimately decided upon, if there’s a way to display the entire bracket I’m thinking that would cut down on quite a bit of the "when do I play?"s.
I don’t expect an instant answer or anything, but if you guys would like some of us to bring setups, the sooner we can find out the better. I was planning on flying, but if I bring a setup it’ll obviously require driving. Just something to keep in mind.
a 24hour pool schedule would be great but fucking crazy for the staff… also if your game is at some random hour like 4am. if possible i would see if it would be possible to add a day or 2 to the event(probably not going to happen… because tickets for planes and hotels were already payed for by many people)
a good schedule would be 9am-2am if attendance is super crazy high. that also gives you a fair amount of sleep.
i think its a bad idea to have people lend their tvs but ps3s would be fine. say somebody brings a tv that is like… idk a sony bravia. those tvs would lag super bad and be a reason for somebody to complain which isnt needed, and probably super annoying for the staff.
One solution that hasn’t been brought up is adding an extra day. Perhaps this isn’t possible because the dates are already locked in. If that’s the case, I would still seriously consider it for next year. Not only does it make it more reasonable to host SF4, it also opens Evo up to host more games. Let’s face it, fighting games are becoming more popular and with new releases like BB and KOF12, it might be nice to expand the roster.
But, assuming that’s not an option I vote for either “Man up” or “Pools 1 game, 3/5 rounds, double elimination”.
SFIV should be a 2 day event. Oh and I agree…SFIV has officially killed off most of the other 2d fighters in the US competitively. SFIV is like the only game I play now. Thanks to C.Viper.
Lending out the PS3s aren’t a problem, IF theres reassurance I’ll be getting it back. Don’t get me wrong, but with stick thieves, im hella worried about bringing my PS3 to the floor this year.
I’m in agreement with canceling the other games. Nobody really cares for any of the other games anymore. It’s either SF4 or you just don’t play fighters at all. Numbers for the other games have been pretty stale all over here on the East Coast(I can attest to nohoho’s post).
I say “Man up” and reach out to the community for PS3’s and volunteers.
The whole “lack of sleep” thing would be more of an issue if everyone was surprised with it at EVO. It’s still an issue, but not as much since you’ve gotten the word out early that the SF4 event could be the most taxing, tiring event anyone’s ever been in.
I hate to say it, but no matter what, if it’s the man up option, there are going to be people hating before and after the tournament. Be ready for posts like “They should’ve known it was going to be so big” or “They should’ve made it a 2 day event.” If the top players make top 8 (JWong, Mike Ross, etc.) or if underdogs/unknowns make it to the top 8, there’ll be tons of “X only did well cause his opponent was super drained.”
I don’t think capping it is a good idea but at the same time I believe that it can still be done. This is just an example.
1024 people enter
16 stations (I used the minimum)
Tournaments run double-elim best of 3 2out of 3 rounds.
If you do that you can have 32 pools of 32 people with the winner and loser of each pool advancing. If the Gamestop finalists are already in the semi-final bracket that puts the tourney at 80 people. 48 people in winners and 32 in the losers bracket.
You will need volunteers to help out in the pools and this is where the problem comes in. Most people are not willing to volunteer. Everybody has an opinion on what would would be best but the real problem is bodies to run a pool. I have run pools at every single evo because I realize how much time it takes to get everything run smoothly.
**Tips for a volunteer **
Before beginning matches, take roll call so that you know who is there.
Let everybody know that they must stay in the tourney area until they have advanced or are eliminated.
Call matches ahead of time so that the next two players are ready to go.
Don't be afraid to eliminate people for not being there. I have eliminated my friends for not being on time.
Tips for the players
Not all players have their own stick. Be willing to lend your stick. I know that some of you do not like other people using your stick but doing so slows down the process.
If you have to leave the tournament area, let the pool director know so that you are not eliminated.
Stay in the tourney area until you advance or are eliminated. If you don't then you could be eliminated. I have eliminated people and they get mad because they traveled from far away. if you traveled from far away for the tournament then at least be willing to stay since that was the primary reason for attending.
**Tips for the Evo Staff **
If you do get the 1000+ people, have a meeting with everybody involved in running pools so that everybody is on the same page.
Get a list of people beforehand who will be helping out.
What needs to happen is people need to register early. I cannot count how many times players have come up to me during check-in bitching about the extra $20 they had to pay because they did not do early bird registration. I understand plans change, but if you’re serious about competing, be serious about registering.
Second, we need total community cooperation here. If you guys are looking for the most hype, most crazy, most attended SF4 tournament, it’s you guys that will have to help make it happen. How? Provide feedback, volunteer to help with equipments/brackets, show up on time for your matches, and bring your own joystick.
Waiting for joysticks is the one thing that pisses me off every year. “My friend across the room has my joystick.” “The guy right there is using my joystick.” If your stick broke that very day, I understand. But when it’s time to play your match, it’s time to play your match.
DQ will be 3x as strong this year so be at your assigned station when it’s time to play.
Is there a way to see how many have signed up so far? I know that was possible in previous Evos’ registration site.
I voted for Man Up. I want to see this be the biggest, most hype tournament ever.
Evo Staff: You should have some type of volunteer sign up. Have a meeting Thurs. night before Evo or something to get all the volunteers up to speed, organized etc.
