I didn’t actually hurt myself, but I had a couple of close calls with a Roto-Zip that decided it wanted to bounce out of the control panel I was cutting this evening. I know there are several “n00bs” floating around here, and there are people that think they’re a real SF badazz.
Just wanted to point out that you may be able to whoop anyone in a fighting game, but if you decide to tangle with a power tool, I guarantee you that the winner will be the same every time, and it ain’t gonna be you. That roto-zip is awesome. Works as a router, saber saw, drill, grinder…cuts through wood like butter. Would cut through me like water too.
Seriously, I had a mis-step, and had I not caught myself, my wife would have come home to what would have looked like me committing sepuku with a roto-zip. Disembowelment by rotary tool probably isn’t a fun way to go.
FYI. BE CAREFUL!!!
Unplug the tool when changing blades or bits, heck, even when it’s just not in use. Power tools falling off of workbenches can be a problem I suspect too. The extra 2 seconds it takes to re-plug the tools is less important than the time spent in the ER. Also, don’t force the tool. You can always touch wood up later. Hands aren’t so easy to fix.
The drill press I use is a late 50’s Craftsman, and it’s seen some use in a family furniture factory. Let’s just say it’s well used, but still works wonderfully. Anyway, when I was drilling my button holes with a nice new, sharp as a mofo hole saw the other day, the saftey vibrated loose while I was re-adjusting my lexan, and the fucker just dropped, landing between my thumb and finger. Only missed by about 3/4". I almost shit, and to tell you the truth, I wansn’t even pissed that it ruined my lexan peice. Yeah, Numbski preaches the truth, yo. You can never be too careful. Nature of the beast.
i use the roto-zip to cut lexan for my sticks and the other day a chunk of what was cut from the plastic flew into my eye(hot semi melted plastic)…thank god we can blink…thats what i get for not wearing goggles at the time.
i think we get to careless after weve been doing things for a while…we all say…i do this all the time and nothings happened yet…and the next thing you know…BAM!!!
the next faces of death movie…“issue 25.Stick Makers”…lol
Whenever I work in the shop the safety glasses, hearing protection, blade guards, dust collection (have to protect your lungs too!) are all in operation. Push sticks for the table saw as well.
Numbski said it best. Respect your power tools.
@ShinAkumax:
Power tool assisted pumpkin carving ftw.
