You have to expect to see many realistic characters in this game considering Sony’s history of famous characters being less goofy and more serious, even in recent years it the same way.
Crash and Spyro ain’t the only third party franchises that helped defined the Playstation brand in it’s 20 years of existence. A Metal Gear character would be a realistic choice as that series has a strong tie to the Playstation brand. It helps that Kojima is fond of Snake making crossover appearances (Snake was added to Brawl at his request). Same goes for Final Fantasy. Every main series game since 7 has been exclusive to a Sony console until FFXIII

I just wanted to respond to another common counterpoint against this game. People complain about the (potential) roster, saying that is won’t ever be as “epic” as the Smash lineup because there’s no character like Mario and even iconic potential characters like Spyro and Crash are largely irrelevant. The reality is most people who play Smash don’t even play Mario and Luigi and characters that were largely unknown such as Pit, Ice Climbers, Game and Watch and Marth have become fan-favorites. Not to mention aside from a few pokemon and Mario characters the Smash roster is largely made up of largely “irrelevant” Nintendo characters. Seriously, when was the last time Nintendo released a big budget Yoshi or Captain Falcon game?
Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale not only will have iconic characters like Kratos (who is the protaganist of one of the best selling game series of all time) but will surely have plenty of other fantastic characters because the playstation has had a great history of gaming, especially with 3rd party characters which we will see.
As for some characters I would love to see that aren’t super obvious… Anyone from ModNation Racers, Sephiroth, Ratchet and Clank, Tony Hawk (THPS), the possibilities are endless. This game really could be legendary.
There is no reason to really argue about character roster.
This will always come down to player preference. One grow up with N64 then the Smash Brothers roster has that nolstagia factor for it.
I personally prefer the Smash Brothers roster, as it is filled with characters that i’ve played when was little and was more enthusiastic about videogame.
The roster so far in Sony has been pretty weak for me, but the reason is just that i’m not much of a Sony Dude.
Never had a chance to play Parappa the Rapper, Only played the Demo of Fat Princess, never was into FPS to enjoy Killzone, Sweet Tooth isn’t my fav TM character, Never was into Sly Cooper and Kratos for me was such an unlikable prick that it actually ruined my experience with GoW.
But then i understand not EVERYONE grew up on Mario, Kirby or Link adventures and that Sony characters are as iconic to them as my nintendo characters are iconic for me, so it is stupid to even ARGUE about character roster
But anyway, these kinda of games are always fun with friends, and it always a lovable thing in Game Marathons so is pretty much a guaranteed buy

Yeah I can agree with this but Crash and Spyro were more tied to the Sony Playstation than any one of those characters were. Crash has commercials promoting both him and playstation meanwhile some of the characters and franchises your talking about have appeared on other consoles before the playstation.
Crash and Spyro were made for it and really were the PS brand. That’s why it’s more important to get them imo.
That article was written by IPW’s own W.K. Pretty much the best preview so far. Very in-depth and written from a fighting game player’s perspective. I agree with him 100% on his stance on the super-only kills. I see items being an important part of competitive play, which is a good thing. And it also looks like stages may not be a major problem as they are in smash. That may change but so far so good (the LBP/Buzz stage is up for debate tho).
All in all, I’m really excited that this game is coming out and I can’t wait to see what the community can do with this game.
i have to know: what on earth would make you sell a ps3, but keep a 360? i mean really if it wasn’t for the good flow of 3rd party games, 360 would be a horrible next gen system.
When i say overally realistic im meaning like very very plain jane characters, i think cole from imfamous and any metal gear solid character would be a great add. Those characters have appealing and well done designs in terms of there combat styles and costumes. Heavy rain and uncharted are extremely real life, i feel they will take down the overall craziness of the game and the overall visual appeal because they just look like ordinary human beings wearing ordinary clothes you and i wear. They also dont have interesting combat ideas to pull from.
I know fat princess doesnt but, atleast there is an interesting visual appeal to her and she doesnt look like you or me or anyone you may know in real life. None the less i understand nathan drake, but thats where it should stop. All the characters they have now fit 100% fine as is, kratos isnt plain jane like heavy rain and uncharted characters are and his fighting style is very exaggerated from his title.
Again i pray for short combos, but we will see =). That im my opinion will make super only kills a bit more welcoming.
At first, I really was unimpressed. Only killing with supers seemed like it would be very limiting, especially with only 3 of them per character. The characters move around in a kinda floaty way, which brought back bad memories of Brawl. Some of the supers seem very powerful; the first-person ones in particular seemed easy to win with, and Parappa’s apparently kills everyone on the screen.
But I got a bit more excited when I saw how Fat Princess, Parappa, and Radec could have radically different playstyles; Radec’s in particular appealed to me. I know nothing about the guy beyond his part in this game, but I like him already.
LBP/Buzz stage seems like it’s going to get old very fast. It reminds me uncomfortably of Warioware Inc., although it’s definitely going to be less obnoxious.
So, Crash and Spyro and Laura probably wont make it, but who owns the guy from Midieval? He would be a perfect choice for this game!
Anyway MGS,FF,KH,and others are in the same boat as Crash and Spyro.
Though if Kojima wants Snake, he’ll be in there.

If I had to guess, third party support will probably end up being:
Crash (obvious ps1 icon, also because apparently this guy has about 10000x the fan demand I would’ve thought)
Spyro (see: Crash, although to a slightly lesser degree)
Cloud (FF7 = millions of sales rip)
Sephiroth/Sora (either double dipping into FF7 for obvious reasons, or delving into KH because all the main games were PS2 so uh yeah)
Raiden (MGS rep, Kojima likes his characters being in the games [Snake in Brawl], good publicity for MGR)

I was a Nintendo gamer up until like five months ago when I bought my PS3 so it’s not like I have nostalgia for any of these characters.
