i want one
Alright, I’ll look into in. I’ve got a ton on my plate at the moment, so there’s a good chance I won’t even be able to look at it for a month, but I’ll figure out what’s needed.
If you can’t get your directions to come out on your keyboard, put something curved like a spoon over the arrow keys and rock that. Like playing on a d-pad now!!
You can all thank me in person at EVOWorld:)
oh shit, dog-face for the win idea.
That was a mispost. I actually meant that the USB keyboard protocol is limited to 6 keys and lower. PS/2 doesn’t have a limit that I know of.
I guess whomever decided the protocol wasn’t a gamer :-/
You can get by with 6 keys, though.
I think keyboards that get by that accomplish that feat with custom drivers, which is why the Razer Tarantula can do what I THINK is Full N-Key even while using USB.
Even then, I’m surprised no people are interested in the business venture of creating the equivalent of a Gamer’s Model M.
SOMEONE has to know some investors that like taking crazy ideas like that and making them reality. Maybe Hevad Khan…
The Tarantula can do a max of 10 buttons at once. That’s pretty much the most you could possibly use anyway, lol. But it isn’t a standard USB keyboard when it’s doing that. You have to have upgraded firmware in the keyboard and drivers running on the comp and then activate “Turbo Mode” by pressing a sequence of buttons on the keyboard.
If you just plug the Tarantula in and use it without software, 6 buttons is the max.
I never even considered using a keyboard until a friend of mine wanted to play against me and he only had one gamepad. I played on the kb, and took to it right away. I’m still better with a pad/stick, but I think kb play is worth practicing, since the kb is ubiquitous.
Has anyone tried the TimberWolf (aka WolfClaw type II) keyboard with a fighting game?
I’m thinking of getting one for FPS, but if it’s decent for fighters, I’ll get one for sure.
So it uses some sort of trickery to get past the 6 button limitation. That’s pretty interesting!
But it goes back to it using its custom drivers to accomplish this.
I’ve been using a keyboard for all 2D fighting games since MKII came out for PC in the mid 90s. My default set up is W S A D for Up Down Left Right, and then generally, since I use a standard Dell keyboard, I use Insert, Home, Pg Up, Del, End, Pg Dn for attacks since they are 6 buttons in two rows. It takes some getting use to for directions but keyboard buttons for attacks are great, especially if you can find a keyboard that has few limitations.
The other night I was playing someone on Kaillera (private zero lag or delay LAN server under 20ms) in SF3:3S and pulled off 6 Gigas Breakers in 3 matches.
Using buttons for directions eliminates the chance of accidental improper movements, it’s just so much more accurate, even though good sticks are extremely accurate. And it’s not that using a KB is easier, it’s definitely more difficult, but so long as you don’t suffer from keylocking which is merely a circumstance that can be avoided theoretically, you should be able to increase efficiency significantly in any game.
I love using it for MK specifically because of taps and stuff. No one can ever understand how I do it. At a few tournaments people have seen me use the keyboard, and they are amazed, and then I even hear people comment if I’m using a stick “You should see this guy use a keyboard.” I think the problem is people are too distracted by the extraneous buttons, if you can imagine a set up without all the extra buttons, designed to look “cool” and controller like, people might actually understand the fundamental advantage of all those fingers.
I use ring, middle, and index fingers, so it’s very similar to playing on a stick, except the directions are controller by finger tips exclusively. It’s possible to use a modified positioning method on a stick and basically to the same thing.
Without remapping/adding extra direction keys, how is it possible to accurately pull off 360s, or even 270s? The way I see it, the most you could do with the standard IKJL/WASD is a half circle forward or half circle backward. I was wondering how you’d manage motions like hcf+uf (Sagat’s Tiger Knee), or d,df,f,uf (Akuma’s Demon Flip) ?
I think someone already mentioned one method where you mapped the directions in a row (in addition to a cross pattern elsewhere on the kb) and just ‘piano’ the keys. Otherwise, you just have to have a very nimble middle finger, I guess.
btw, this is the kb I’m interested in getting. Any thoughts?

I’ve been playing on a keyboard since 1994, and just like using a controller, it’s quite good if you’ve had enough practice. For 360s, using say WASD inputs, I piano my fingers across ASD and then reach my pinky finger up to hit W. Half-circles are actually harder for me.
just quick finger movements. Before I had extra money I played on my keyboard alot with capcom and snk games. I used the arrow keys and the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 as my buttons or sometimes I played cross handed with the default buttons. Just the other day I hooked up 3s for the first time on my Pc and I played better with my keyboard than I did with my ps2 controller. (I counldn’t use my stick because I’m almost finished modding it.) but hey, to each his own.
Yeah, in turbo mode it’s not a standard USB keyboard any more, it’s like any other USB device that uses it’s own custom drivers. I have to say it was weird updating the firmware on my keyboard, lol.
BoggleMind: It just takes practice. A person that wants to do 360s on a keyboard will probably figure out how. It might take time to get used to it, but I know I have no trouble with it any more. I’m not sure why but for me to use the WASD layout I actually use my pinky finger, ring finger, and middle finger for the directions and my index finger does nothing. Not sure why that made it easier but it did.
I’ve been eyeing a different mapping (WASDF where W and F are both Up) in an attempt to get standing 720s down. That’s something I can’t do on any controller yet. But with ASDF being Left, down, right, up you can just tilt your hand towards the A key and press straight down and your fingers will naturally do the 360 motion.
Not that I’m the one who should be casting the first stone, but it just seems to me that the very idea of pianoing A-S-D-F to do 720 is straight BS.
I just do DSAWDSAW or ASDWASDW depending on what direction I want the spin.
Dude, that idea is SICK!!! I would rep you if I was premie!
But anyhow, does that work? I would love to have it for MAME, or heck, any emulator.
Wait… that SHOULD work for MAME, because it allows you to have " x or y" key.
Damn. I’m going to try that when I get home!
I do A S D W+attack for 360s. It’s very easy, wake ups I get constantly. If I am playing around vs the CPU I get at 6 - 8 Moonsault Splashes a match with Hugo.
720s are a bit more difficult, but I think all you have to do is A S D W A S D+attack I usually pull that off from the air when I clearly have a significant gap between the original “A” or “Up” press. I find it easier to sneak them out if I’m blocking, catching a jab as a counter, during a dash, wake up, landing from a tight jump, usually when landing at the same time as someone etc. That’s basically how you should be doing them anyway.
Tiger knee motion is very easy, I use it a lot in vs games online, specifically MvC for Chun Li’s air super close to the ground as anti air believe it or not. It’s just taking away a direction from the 270/360
