Me and my roommate play UMVC3 from time to time and he wrecks me. It wouldn’t be so bad if this wasn’t my childhood nemesis. My question is do you think playing against someone better than you can make you better or worse? I think my pride gets in the way when we play and I ask him never to hold back when he plays me. Should I take a different approach?
It’s always better to play people better than you. Better players force you to play smart to win and to adapt, which makes you a better player. Playing bad players doesn’t enable you to improve because your same old strategies and ways of thinking will beat them every time. So you have no reason to get better.
You should always stay hungry and search out competition from players who are way better than you. When you lose, lose with humility. People respect and appreciate humbleness, and they’ll be happy to tell you what you need to improve when you ask for help.
As long as you realize why you’re losing and what you can do to start winning, playing someone better than you can be beneficial. Since you live with this dude you have an excellent opportunity to learn about the game, so ask questions, implement his advice, and you’ll start improving.
Agreed, Just about everybody in my area is better than me but my roommate is the best. It just pains me to lose to THIS particuarly person, I forget about getting better and I just want to win
I think I will start asking a lot of questions after every match instead of just slamming the rematch button. It’s so easy to hit that button that I forget what happened in the last match.
looks like all I really needed to do is vent somewhere lol. Thanks for the advice peeps, I’ll evolve.
Actually, where is a good place I could upload gameplay footage so I can have other people breakdown my gameplay? We have the means to upload footage, but is there a forum where people are interested in breaking it down?
Here…
Thanks
Make sure you sit and analyse you’re matches afterwards and make notes of you’re bad habits (or his). It’s much easier to examine you’re flaws with a beer and a spare 30 minutes than playing and making adjustments on the fly.
Sometimes I’ll think I’ve played badly against a top player but when I run it back I really only made 1 or 2 errors that could have been avoided. Equally sometimes I’ll think I’ve played well but I’ve made a lot of lucky guesses. In game those decisions feel different though.

Why don’t you take a break after a match to clear your thoughts and re-think what you did wrong, that way you continue to learn.
Also taping matches are a good way to improve execution and combos and go back and see where you lost it at.
I actually tried this yesterday and I came to the conclusion that I’m not that bad. I just have to work on a lot of little things.
