It depends on your local store. Ours (in south Naperville) starts at 3 PM, others I think start at 5. I’d call wherever you want to enter and ask.
You REALLY should have posted that not only would the TVs be different at different stores, but the rules also. Probably could have found a store with rules I could live with, but now I’m stuck. Dumb ass Evergreen TO isn’t allowing sticks. Gaming store chains really need to quit trying to run SF tournaments. WE DON’T PLAY ON PADS!!! Thought we got that cleared up after the Gamestop tournies, but I guess not.
GG Play n Trade.
P.S. I really try and like this store…just simply because it is NOT Gamestop, but you guys make it so hard.
Dankk,
everyone called their local store to check the rules, as well as tourney times. Most people found the ones that had BYOC and went to those ones, such as the Batavia store that I went to. Did you call and check your local one to ask about BYOC, as well as start time?
and yes, some of us do play on pads
This guy mentioned that he didn’t know about TVs…some might lag. He said he didn’t know about times…some stores may be at different times. While he never said rules were standard, he never said they weren’t, and I definitely would have asked about them ahead of time, if I knew it may be an issue. I called to get the time…and didn’t care about the TVs. I’m an ass for assuming, but this wasn’t very clear at all. These stores need to get their shit together.
Yea, I know some of us play on pads, but you guys are definitely in the minority…and don’t feel those of us using sticks are trying to cheat. Stupid TO(not referring to the OP…but the actual TO at the Evergreen store).
I apologize. That shit is fucked up. I have no control over the TV thing, so I stated that up front. The rules, however, should have been identical everywhere. They were sent out to all of the owners, so there is no excuse that they wouldn’t be. Beyond that, every store had a representative at the last regional meeting where it was EXPLICITLY stated that sticks were okay and that most players would probably be using them. The last regional tournament we did was for MW2, which had a similar problem of different stores using different rules, so this time I personally got the rules together early for everyone to use so we’d be on the same page.
All I can say is that I’m really sorry (and totally embarrassed) that you had a shitty experience, and for what it’s worth I’ll be chewing them out about this. I feel responsible for wasting your time, and that bums me out. We’re really trying to step up our game to do events like this, and it sucks when some knuckleheads make everyone look bad with their stupidity.
I think the guy at the crystal lake store got confused because they said 2/3 rounds, 2/3 games and he took that to be the same thing, as if they were being redundant. He kept saying both so when I went first I kind of dicked around thinking that I would just win the next two games but after we started the second game when I lost they said that that was it. Regardless I somehow got through a lot of matches. The other thing is the TV we laggy but I can’t really complain since I was pretty much just hitting buttons but I somehow got a few links out a few times but I was messing up a lot of stuff too and also didn’t feel like I could get too fancy with bullshit. But regardless lag works both ways so I like I said, it’s nothing major to complain about since the person who took the tournament definately should have won and even though I saw Ari mess up a few times at first he was able to adapt very well and it didn’t seem to affect him after awhile.
Ari was closest to the crystal lake store so that is the one that he won. Nice job, I think you will win the 1000 dollars.
I’m not sure who the guy was who got second but he wasn’t a known player I don’t think. They were saying that only the first place person went on to play next week but I think everything got worked out in the end. Frankly if through some miracle I managed to get 2nd I probably would have given up my spot anyway since I just headed out to check out the new play n trade and really don’t have any intention of showing up next weekend anyway.
But anyway regarding the different rules for each place, I was surprised that the rules I was expecting were different than what happened when I went there and if I cared about it I would be raging as well. They let us use our own controllers but the one match only thing was really weird but I just kind of rolled with it because I just showed up to play a little bit and check out the store. I haven’t even bought the game yet (or any other game this year for that matter…) but I just tried to do the best I could under the circumstances.
Thanks for the response, and apology. Kind of more pissed after reading your post, though. The guy was such a douche when I tried to explain and get him to allow me and the few others that brought their sticks to use them. For him to act like that, while he knew he was fucking me over sucks.
The tournament was fun and I was surprised to see two SRK people there.
Phreakazoid you have a great chun.
I have a lot a fun at the tourney, here in crystal lake, I hope you guys host more tourneys, maybe following EVO rules, I hate playing with busted sticks or seeing faces when I ask to borrow someone else s.
To be honest it’s difficult to compare play n trade to gamestop, because gamestop is a corporation but play n trade operates as franchines so don’t let the fact that certain stores just couldn’t deliver when it came to this series of tournaments because it’s just by a store by store basis, and if you guys pay attention to other tournaments going on around, play n trade is more than a viable location to have a “real” tournament compared to one’s done at, say, gamestop. It just comes down to the franchise owner and the people involved, and it sucks that some people get a bad impression about the company just because of one location.
I went to the one at Orland, not a lot of people, but it was cool.
Batavia tournament was fun! Not a lot of people, so it went by pretty fast. Next week is the finals in Batavia. See you other qualifying cats there (and hopefully some spectators, too)! Also, special shoutouts to Play ‘N’ Trade for having the bravery to undertake such an event!

/ It was nice meeting you, too! I was really surprised when I found out it was you who was the only other one there playing stick! Good stuff today! Hope to see you next week to spectate the finals!
Hey Kobayashi, it was nice meeting you at the tourny.
hey everyone, i was at the crystal lake store and was also confused about the single match rule setting. i think everyone was confused about that.
my name is luke and i took second place at that tournament. it was a fun time and a great experience. was the rufus who took first really fLoE? i dont really know faces, but his name rings a bell.
i talked to him after the match and he seemed pretty nice.
also, i thought the top two players from each tournament went to regionals, but the store was saying otherwise. can i get clarification on this?
Oh, my .02$ to Beefy.
Make sure the guys running the tourneys understand double elimination, it seems that there were differences in some of the stores in how they ran the final matches. BP Amoco mentioned they set it for best of 7, 1 set as the final match. Ours was 3/5 round w/ 3/5 sets, and didn’t really honor the double elim for kobayashi since technically I should have had to beat him in 3/5 sets twice since I was coming from losers bracket. Obviously the qualifier, so it’s not a huge deal, but it may become a bigger deal when the actual prize is on the line next weekend.
Other than that, thanks for running this, and great job to the stores that understood that having an arcade stick isn’t cheating
p.s. nice to meet you goodfool, interesting running into other people from srk that I don’t normally see
I was the Naperville Gief player.
I’ll be in Batavia for the finals, so I promise that everything will run smoothly. You’d think that this shit wouldn’t be rocket science, but apparently that’s assuming too much from people.
Rest assured that I’ll be talking with the franchisees about everything they messed up.
Also, thanks for the kind words, Syxx. You hit the nail on the head.
For those at Batavia next week, feel free to say hi. I’ll be the bespectacled , bearded bald guy. Fuck yeah, alliteration.
I’ll be the big white guy that isn’t marcus. I’m pretty impossible to miss. See you all there.
I wish I could go, but don’t have a ride that day, cause I don’t have a car.
the one in orland was single elim, but it was definatly a good time, gg’s to everyone that was there. the manager said it was cool if i organized small tournaments there on a regular basis (5dollar entry, winner gets pnt giftcards?) if theres enough interest ill start a thread and start a sign up.
