Before you move on to ps2 RPGs… You better have at least tried to play ‘Vagrant Story’…
Very deep and dark story, enigmatic characters, an interesting fighting system (innovative back then), heavy customization options, an evolving beasteary, and beauuuuuutiful music. It does have one downfall, but I gaurantee its gonna be worth your time.
Also, try Brigandine. Seriously, just try it. Don’t read any reviews about it. Just try it. You are either going to be very grateful or murder me. I will take my chances.
I hope you are willing to play 3D rpgs. Moving to PS2, it is sort of inevitable, eventually.
Xenosaga was pretty well made. I liked the fighting system. Some characters were very annoying, but the story was pretty interesting, enough to keep me immersed.
Radiata Stories was ok I guess.

Stella Deus was pretty good too. I think you might like this one a lot more than I did, but from an objective point of view, it was actually pretty good, especially considering the RPG drought the ps2 experienced…
There are plenty of other RPGs I didnt mention. But only because I didnt try them myself (especially the ones with 14yr olds wearing tights wealding swords ten times their size…). But if you can see past that here are some RPGs that got good reviews…

IF you change your mind steve… and decide to play some RPGs with some mechs in them (Come on, Xenogears had mechs, and I think you played that) then give Front Mission 3 a go… its 2D, its got a great story, 2 very very different endings (The branch actually happens 5mins into the game, you wont even KNOW that the branch happened), and its strategically deep, and it has an entire internet world in the game. Honestly, it is better than almost all the things I mentioned. Its for ps2 by the way. JUST DO IT!
Edit: I did play 12. Its actually pretty decent. Very immersing if you dont overkill (I did). Plenty of side quests and monster hunts for you to take. It will kill your time. I was 200+ hrs into it. Umm… I think it takes place in the same world as FFT:Advanced. You know the game boy advance one. The one with the F#@!ing annoying judges that tell you what to use and what not to use. Anyways. Yeah don’t get too excited about that. It just means it has those rabbit people, lizard people and moogles and shit. Anyways good game. The only reason I didnt mention it is because I thought you were Anti-FF.
Valkyrie Profile 2 seemed good too. But I didnt play far enough to comment on the story though. Didnt stop because it sucked though. The fighting system was cool… keep SUPERING! I did not let ONE WARRIOR go ANYWHERE… they all belong to ME!

Yes, install a Wiikey on off switch if you want to play retails,
if not backup your retail copy to DVD 9, Resign it and and reburn on a DL DVDR and it works fine,
