what an asshole

what is the most efficient and effective way to change the color palette of a character sprite?

photo filter in PS…or from scratch, replace each pixel…i choose mspaint

negro edit:

you can also use Replace Color but it’s the medium of the two.

ms paint ftw just bust out the paint can

got damn!!!

I was gonna start a new topic to ask q’s an shit,

but then I saw this and its wealth of info!!!

thanks! I’ma make sure to put some time aside later to learn lots of new stuff!!!

replace color doesnt seem to quite work.

isn’t paint can kinda tedious? photo filter is a bit odd.

say i want to change this

http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/jjcheng2/shared/o_sol_0547%20copy.gif

to this

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/jjcheng2/shared/o_sol-pal_0002%20copy.gif

i also have 4 other frames to change. i tried to use color replacement, but for some reason, some of the colors turn out wrong.

precise color change is a pain in the ass, i’ll give you that but i think Gumz said paint bucket but he really ment the pencil tool. you’ll have to zoom in on the sprite and use the oppsite color to change it.
examples:

photo filter is just used when you just want the sprite color to be diffrent and not to be a specific palette.

color replace is useful but it’s a pain in the butt. i only tried it two times…other than that, for what you want you’ll need to do it in MSP, with the pencil tool, and a lot of man hours…

You could do the SF2 method:

Select parts of the sprite you want to change.
Go to images adjustments, and do a Hue/Saturation
Repeat to other parts of the Sprite.

Not the most perfect way,but I figured out that’s how they did it in SF2.Or close to the same effect.

i use color replace for alot of stuff but its a solid white or black i use select x hue/saturation colorize it all works out well cept for my pc monitor has been gay lately and the color is off time for a new one

I didn’t want to make a new thread for this: How do you guys save your images?

My problem is that I don’t know how to save my image and keep the quality and to keep the size down. What format do I save it in? Or what do I need to do to before hand to make the image less in size.

As for size I mean the KB size for what we can upload.

You use PS?

I’m using CS2

Go to file>Save for Web> choose between JPEG,PNG-8,PNG-24.

PNG-24 has the best quailty, but takes up the most memory and makes the file the largest when hosted. It is the image at it’s best though.

PNG-8 is gonna give you the smallest file, but with the worst quality depending on your settings. This is the one you adjust the most to get the file to fit.

JPEG is the basic format. It has a simple configuration, and basically works with 5 different levels of how well the image looks. At Maximum it usually makes the file just a little less than PNG-24, but they look the same almost.

I usually go with PNG-8 and my images don’t turn out to different:

PS this is also a free av by the way:
PNG-24

PNG-8

JPEG

Wow thanks.

If you’re image is very low in color count PNGs are typically the better way to go. And also PNGs are essentially the same thing as .gifs but without the legal controversy.

hey anyone know where you can get some brushes? like say, a sakura petal brush?

or how to properly use brushes for that matter.

Umm any PS design site has them. . . granted your using photoshop. I can’t really vouch for other image editing programs, but you can find GMIP brushes in that link as well.

Other bet is:

If you need help installing them let me know.

Using them comes from experience, and depends alot on what your trying to accomplish with them.

hm, okay. thanks!

i know how to install them, though its just that when i try to make imprints, it seems like the brushes randomly disperse the images instead of actually painting them where i want to paint them. not sure what all the settings do. i sort of figured out some stuff just by fiddling around with it.

Well that really just depends on the brush and how they were made.

Also:
If you don’t know you can click here(highlighted button)

and this little menu comes down:

You an adjust brush settings. Lowering the spacing usual works for me. Really just depnds on the brushes.

Alright no fancy tut like the first page(when I make a sig tut maybe)

I’ll be rendering this:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/1.png

Now their are a few ways to actually render an image. the simplest and least effective is to use the magic eraser tool:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/2.png

Here’s what I get with one or two magic eraser clicks set at a 50 tolerance(Upper right corner.Never go over 50 if using this.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/3.png

As you can see the space around the render is choppy, and some of the nonrender is still around.(Anything not near the render you’d get rid of with the regular eraser tool).

Now I will show you how I render my images.

Select the pen tool(highlight)
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/4.png

Now the way I do it is selct not the render, but what you actually want to remove. You can zoom in to get a better view of what your removing by pressing ctrl+ with the image selected.

I chhose a good spot to start rendering from and using the pen tool click where you want to put an achor(sort of like a fence post to fence in the render part)Here I’ve started from his stomach base and started up.O’m trying to keep a very small amount of black around him:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/5.png

I continue to go up towards his face:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/6.png

Alright I’ve got one side almost finished, but now I need to actually get rid of the grey/text part of the image:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/7.png

It may be hard to see,but on the very very edge of the canvas I’ve put a pen tool achor, and went straight to the bottom and pu another, the moved right a bit and put another, finally I clicked on the first pen tool achor and closed it.:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/8.png

Ok now right click inside that enclosed area while still using th pen tool, and go to make selection:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/9.png

Now click make selction select make new selection(should be only option) Also notice the Feather Radius?
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/10.png

I usually set it to 1,but 2 or 3 may be fine depending on how you rendered. Click ok and you should now see the chosen area making a moving line effect.
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/11.png

Ok now to get rid of all of that grey just hit the delete button:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/12.png

Side Note:If you haven’t done any previous work in your PS session; you’ll just end up filling the image with your secondary color in the 2 color tab:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/13.png

Ok now repeat with the other area of the image, and this is what I ended up with:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/14.png
then the little spot around his arm:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/ribu67_/15.png

so my end result was:
