Phil Fish and Keiji Inafune call out modern Japanese games/devs

Lol they don’t in no way all suck you get shit games from time to time but yeah I like how he can say that shit and his game not even out yet. To add to it the bcklash over the whole thing was funny hell even people that don’t really care for Japanese games where all up in his ass. Both east and west have shit games but if you look at the west what gets shelled out the most FPS’s that all try to copy CoD and a few good games like skyrim and Mass effect. As in the east sure the main thing is JRPGs yet they make good fighting games and MMO’s like the upcoming PSO2. Inafune just wants the Business model to change Phil just flat out said they suck with nothing to back up and is trying to play the victim now.

But ofcourse because people don’t agree for the most part you will get idiots that will call you weeaboo.[S] lol is that still even a word or was it?[/S]

Re: Western games and FPSes: a common argument that doesn’t hold water. Many, many “Western” (god I hate that term) games aren’t FPSes, and FPS isn’t some sort of poisonous shitty genre anyway.

Re: JRPGs: I don’t mind the JRPG formula, but I haven’t played a really compelling one in some time. I have issues with grinds and eventual “best formulas” the myriad of game systems turn into (e.g., Emerald Weapon attacked me twice, then died). On the story side, there’s a big issue with Japanese storytelling in general, but that’s a gripe for another thread.

… I’m planning, on paper, a JRPG-esque RPG.

Random thought: why haven’t WoW or TOR had Japanese versions yet?

You’re right, he should have been much more tactful. Maybe, “no offense, but I haven’t enjoyed a Japanese game in some time” or something. That said, I do want to hear Fish’s reasoning.

Maybe not Japanese games in general, but I’ve almost completely lost my taste for Japanese RPGs (Demons/Dark Souls being the exception). When I was younger I couldn’t get enough of them, now I can’t fucking stand them. The dialogue, the character design, everything about them annoys me.

The problem with a Western fighting game as a fighting game is as good as the number of people it attracts. Fighting games for the purpose of this site is about community building, so the size of the community typically directly correlates to its success. West has made some OK fighters, just people aren’t willing to forgive their mistakes like they established makers like Capcom and Arc Sys.

MK did well and it was Western. Thing is most people don’t consider anything that isn’t a japenese fighter as a real fighter, which also makes it hard for the West to make their own adaptation of the genre. Kinda wanted to try a Avatar the Last AirBender Fighter. Think that shit could work.

Remember Zack and Wiki and No more heroes? :), unfortunately they didn’t have huge acceptance because of some prejudices, a lot of people should know that companies like Capcom don’t want to invest into new IP’s, remember what inafune said before?

This is not different than Activision killing Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk and they are milking the hell out of COD, what about WoW or SWTOR? no serious innovation since the Everquest days, EA with the need for speed series, the EA sports series (this is more understandable), etc, interesting opinion: http://www.gamespot.com/news/pursuit-of-aaa-is-a-cancerous-growth-ac3-dev-6365381

Is ironic how some people bash japanese games because of the “no new IP’s” argument, when they have SFIV, SFxT, RE, FF or Marvel lol, the DS and PSP systems had amazing Japanese games without bullshit, as a gamer i like games from both parts.

He’s likely referring to the vastness of the game, and how open it is. Japanese don’t do things like this. They make no open ended games. They don’t make epic RPG’s. They make linear games that hold your hand and walk you through it.

No i didn’t, that’s my point.

  1. Jailbreaking is legal on an iPhone. I can play DS and PSP games on my iphone. Do go on???
  2. Most handheld games for DS/PSP are just recylced older games that now can run on a mini console. I don’t need to play games that would have been fun 5 gens ago, as if they were new.
  3. Blinky lights and half dressed characters and lame humour and non existent storyline, are something I am no longer interested in.

No I did try them. And they sucked. How many shitty FF games should i play and hate before I decide I don’t like them and don’t wanna play them? I didn’t buy any japanese games this gen BECAUSE NONE OF THEM INTERESTED ME. Seriously, it’s not like I’m closing my eyes whenever I hear the word Sega or something.
Japanese games suck. They’ve sucked since probably halfway through the PS2 cycle. Maybe even earlier. I hate the art style, I hate the shit stories, I hate the characters, I hate the developers, I hate the fact they ARE NOT FUN. Do you get this? Do I need to draw you a picture to go along with this? This has nothing to do with me ignoring an entire library of games. This is me not buying shit games, because they are shitty games that only a handful of easily amused children and the mentally handicapped enjoy. News flash, I don’t buy shitty western games either, but at least they make GOOD ones and new titles, rather than the 12th or 13th iteration of a series that no longer has anything to do with the previous games.

lemme guess, you’re asian?
western gaming makes open ended games. I can play Fallout, Skyrim, and have SOOOOOOOOOOOO many ways to play. As opposed to a game like FFXIII where every item I pick up only is equippable on one exact character, and every path I walk is linear as fuck so I have no options in my gameplay. Just walk from point A to point B, then hit X on my controller a lot to select some options, then watch cutscenes galore.

Western gaming = sports titles, rpg’s that actually sell, FPS games such as Halo and CoD, a whole slew of things. They INNOVATE. Look at LA Noire. Or Portal, or any of these nifty ideas in games. Then look at Japan, and all you get is copies of other games. Holy shit Devil May Cry sold well, let’s make annual sequels, a reboot, and 25,000 clones of games similar to DMC. Holy shit Final Fantasy did well, let’s all make turn based RPG’s where you can summon a huge monster and do 9999 damage a whole bunch of times. What’s the magic spells in our new game? Oh, fire, ice, lightning…oh totally different from FF’s spells though…

how many games sold well from Japan last year? Lemme help you with that. The ONLY games that cracked top ten was Pokemon. ALL other games were from western companies.

The ONLY games that Japan is able to sell as of late, are sequels to series that have been running a hella long time. Mario will always sell well. Pokemon will always sell well. But maybe they should try to come up with some NEW intellectual properties.

Or I could always ignore what every fucking developer for the last 15 years has been saying, and follow the trustworthy advice of a random forum poster with zero clue

And most people bitched when those companies did that. All the Tony Hawks got dumb, but later on they just tried using different gimmicks (the board in Ride, for instance). So we have a few MMO clones, it’s generally a genre. Its kinda like how back in the day we had 2D worlds. Now we have first person views in most of our games, and huge open worlds. Just because you wanna classify it as an MMO or FPS doesn’t mean it is. Technically, SWTOR is an extension of Star Wars Old Republic RPG’s, which predate WoW. Sure, EA pumps out Need for Speed, but that’s essentially them just making a racing game every year. Like sports titles, they sadly do need annual updates. JRPG’s do not.

Western companies take the money from guarantee money (ie - new CoD game or new Need for Speed game), and put it towards trying to develop new IPs. Japanese companies rehash another sequel with barely anything new added, then take whatever profits they get and put it towards ANOTHER sequel with nothing added to it.

Nah no way I’m saying that its a poisonous genre I myself play Halo and BF along with a few others.Just I’ve seen most games from the west have been TPS or FPS with a few random party games and wrpgs tho I can agree with the JRPG’s being just a cookie cluttered at times like a CoD game with the same story line being over used.

RE: about WoW and TOR I believe WoW is being sold in Japan I have seen a few Japanese streamers of it as for TOR I can’t really explain why for that since I know Japanese people where into star wars at a time.

Some of the best western games I’ve played this generation:

RDR
Split/ Second
Saints Row 2/3rd
Batman AA/AC
Dead Space/ 2
Gears of War/2/3

(CoD series; Bioshock)

All those fucking FPS’, man.

It’s just an over generalization made as Shooters are typically the most successful AAA games. COD has pretty much broke every sales record ever.

Not every good western game is a shooter, but we make a lot more of them than the east.

Hence what I saw saying before wasn’t saying that’s all we make.

I have to admit, even though a lot of those games are TPS, with the exception of Batman I think the TP style lends itself in different ways to the gameplay… TPS does feel like it does free up the gameplay more even though you still do left analog/wasd movement with right analog/mouse look style.

No doubt. It’s a silly knock at the west, though. Most of the first-person shooters made suck in the first place.

I don’t hate on Japanese games, though. Ninja Gaiden 2 is also one of my favorite games of this gen. I could provide a better list if I had my 42+ 360 games here with me.

I love WotS. I still have 3.

4 was already released in jap and it might not get released here.

WotS was always a multiple ending play like you want game, it just doesn’t have the money/big studio to make a game the scale of red/mass. The graphics of the third one on ps3 are still ps2ish.

You forgot Bastion ASSHOLE

Sales =/= Quality otherwise CoD is good.

Edit- Eve: I wasn’t responding to anything you had said, just that commentary on western gaming altogether.

Edit 2- did not intend to quote myself.

…3- specs, I never played it D:

I never got a chance to play them, but I have heard decent things about the more recent ones. Like the ending actual matters because of how you play the game. I have to admit I don’t like it in a lot of rpgs these days where the finale is decided by a last minute dialogue tree.

Ah. I see.

So I’m just going to leave this right here…

And this.

Man I really need to get around to playing Bastion, looks cool.

First off, i’m not asian.
Second, I can’t take you seriously when you say stuff like most of the good handheld games are recycled. That is simply not true.

The issue i’m having with you guys is that you ignore all the good stuff japan came up with and look only at the shit they spewed, as evidenced by your endless allusions to FF13.

You particularly seem to have something against japanese games. You can agree to not liking something without claiming that it sucks.

I played all the games soo revered by America like Skyrim, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 1-2, Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age, The Witcher, GTA4 etc and I was not impressed. Still, I can chalk it up to me not liking those types of games instead of outright claiming American games suck(which they don’t, some of the games are damn cool).

Sales argument is useless, CoD is the most sold game out there.

Anyways, limiting yourself to only one school of video game developing is gonna end up in you missing out on a lot of gems.

A couple gems from JP I played this gen:
Bayonetta, Muramasa, Fatal Frame 4, Ace Attorney Series, Tales of(only decent RPGs around), TWEWY, No More Heroes 1/2, 999, Hotel Dusk, Dark/Demon Souls,KOF13, Blazblue. There are a couple more.

Obviously, a lot of games from JP are shit, anyone should realize that, but that’s not to say the industry is only making shit games. If you’re only looking at square or nintendo when you say japan, of course you’re gonna be disappointed.
In the same vein, a lot games from the US are shit too, and anyone should realize that. Quality games have always been few and far in between.
