Explain this video to me .
This thread is owning fools and non-believers.
I’ve never had too much trouble doing combos and pulling off special moves with a keyboard, but I find that I just can’t react as quickly as I can with a pad. I have to think before doing anything.
All my instincts are trained on a stick or a pad, so I’m sure with practice, I could do okay with the keyboard, but it really is a different beast.
Playing on a pad, for me at least, is the same as using a mediocre stick.
Vega/Guile motion doesn’t seem to work for me, I find doing it normally somewhat consistent though.
It works, It’s just harder to do than the other ones
Try this, hold db, then tap f once. Release the hold from db, and then f,u + k/kkk
snip and a bit…
-true keyboard warriors don’t use macros :D; i use PPP/KKK due to electrical issues mentioned above on certain keyboards, but none for throw/focus/etc.
-720’s are doable on a keyboard using a ‘rolling’ motion; my brother gets it all the time on both 1p/2p sides (imagine rolling the keys; and we all know it isn’t a full 720 anyhow). He actually finds 360s harder to do sometimes (he doesn’t use the b,f,d,u shortcut).
-1frame links are possible, just comes down to standard controller practice like you said.
-why play Viper on a keyboard?
-vega/guile’s ultra/super motions as they should be done is still possible; shortcut doesn’t quite work all the time
-if you must, try using a good laptop-like keyboard; or simply a good laptop keyboard. I find them more responsive than standard keyboards that are crazy stiff
-i am not endorsing the use of keyboards! I do get a kick out of playing on my laptop whilst in transit however. Go buy a stick all you keyboard warriors. But Keyboard > Pad = truth (other than 360/720 motions; sorry mother russia)
Can you explain more about how to do 720 on a keyboard? I really wanna try and train with Zangief, but not being able to do his super/ultra is a pain =/
I hope you’re not joking and I didn’t get 09’ rick-trolled
I tried to convince my brother that a 360 was impossible on the keyboard, then added on that a 720 was near impossible. He disproved me on those, plus the Guile/Vega ultras.
If you really want to try it, grab a laptop keyboard (or similar) where the keys are easy to ‘roll’. It works with a standard “grade” keyboard too, but it is probably 0.5x more difficult. Sorry if i didn’t explain it above fully but:
Assuming you’re on the 1P side
for 360s:
start off on :r:, then with your index and/or middle finger… roll them in a clockwise direction to cover :d:, :l:, and finally end at :u:. You should press punch just before Gief would otherwise jump. Do the reverse for the 2P side. Basically the idea is to do the motion with 2 fingers (1 finger if you’re good) so you cover all the points that you would otherwise on a stick.
for 720s:
My brother can only do these with a jump in; but I assume if you’re fast enough you can buffer.
Start off with :uf:, let go of up whilst holding forward, and then it’s the same motion as the 360, except you don’t stop at the first up (continue ‘rolling’ till you get to the second up):
:uf: to :r:, sliding to :d:, :l:, :u:, :r:, :d:, :l:, finally back to :u:
All of this is done whilst Gief is in the air; if you can do it fast enough you will ultra upon landing. Like a stick, this works regardless of side, so you could start :ub: and do the reverse if you so desire.
Keep in mind that consistency is dependent on your controller and dexterity; my bro can do it on command about 9/10, which isn’t good enough competitively sadly:rofl:. Your fingers will inevitably hurt after a match or two. I still recommend a stick… I’m glad that I don’t ever try playing zangief away from stick. Good luck.
Yeah, I’m looking for a stick as well, but thanks for the tips, Gonna try it in training
Bullshit.
While some people are used to joystick, I have always been used to keyboard. I have played so far 18 characters online, and done all trials with the keyboard.
I found by myself some of the PC shortcuts but I didn’t know about the Guile shortcut.
thanks.
I think I’d have a problem with the keys being too close together compared to the buttons on a stick. And also with raised keys being hard to slide across. Could be really good with a laptop like keyboard though.
I still have problems with precision on my stick sometimes, particular hitting neutral directions although it’s very easy to hit diagonals because you can just jam it into the corner. (e.g hitting straight down for Chun Li’s headstomp gives me problems.) Has anyone ever tried building a custom “stick” with direction buttons you can slide across?
Ryu1999, this was his nick at evo09, had such a stick
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/1830764 ( 15 min mark )
He also manage to get pretty high in the sf2hd tournament.
My main problem with the keyboard are moves that require :uf: or :ub:, the main problem of this is that fact that i have to press 2 keys instead of one. Performing Cammy’s Cannon Strike on the ground ( :d: :db: :l: :uf: :k: ) it’s a nightmare and sometimes i end up just jumping straight forward or straight up.
Ofc this would have been no problem if the people at Capcom would have let me set such keys by default, after all a stick has 8 directions, why on a keyboard i can set only 4 is something i can’t understand. On the other hand i can always use a macro program to get this moves on a single button.
You tell 'em aquashark. How are you doing with SF4 on the PC? I’m still deciding whether I should buy it and lose my life for a few months…
How hard would it be to build a stick like that?
Thanks for the Gief 360 shortcut, it’s very percise and much easier than when I rolled my fingers.
what happens when you hold back and forward? do your character move forward while keeping the back charge like in SF2HDR?
nope, that doesn’t work and i’m glad it doesn’t… would’ve been retarded
Not harder than building a normal stick. Instead of installing a stick, you just install more buttons and solder them to the dpad instead of the joystick. Simple.
As i mentioned before, this keyboard “electrical” (it’s actually an IRQ interrupt issue) problem only affects certain keyboards/motherboards (i suspect the motherboard but im not exactly sure which). On my computer i have no issues holding down two directions and 3 attack keys at the same time. However on my friend’s computer i couldnt even do an ultra without extra ppp/kkk keybindings, or the IRQ buffer would overflow and i’d get a motherboard beep.
The only issue with a good keyboard/motherboard is doing 720s, and it’s not impossible it’s just a pain to pull off on reaction. 360s come out easy, i’ve done all of the hard trials, i can c.lp->HHS link with honda, i can f+mp kara demon with akuma, etc.
Compared to arcade sticks, console controllers have obvious flaws for fighting games but the same is not true for keyboards. Hitting attack buttons is almost exactly the same as an arcade, you are striking down with the tips of your fingers. Using multiple fingers for keyboard movement inputs makes movement inputs far easier once you get the hang of slurring your keystrokes.
I’ve been playing fighting games on my PC for years, and i can type pretty fast, so for me a keyboard is better than a stick. Even the 720 example could be fixed by training your fingers to type out the “word” for a 720 fast enough (dsawdsaw+789). Then again, i dont play Zangief so the one pitfall of using a keyboard that i have actually encountered doesnt affect me.
I wonder, have any console tournaments allowed keyboards as a supported input device?
