Parrying in this generation of fighting games

After playing 3rd strike at a friends house I forgot there was one method in the game that I really enjoyed when I had been playing 3rd strike in the past.
That being parrying.
I liked parrying cause it helped you not only build meter but give you a good counterstrike if you knew what you were doing. Or figured out the opponents gameplan.

I took a long break from fighting games and gaming period due to a few responsibilities so Im not sure why they took it out, but its definitely something I liked in fighting games
Maybe, Im not sure, itd work in some of the newer fighting games.
But its just a little thought I wanted to share and see how others thought as well
-you do however have to bee good at parrying, otherwise youll open yourself up

-----I was told this was a better forum section to add this too.----
Although I would like to add putting this in some fighting games

This works better~
Mostly due to SFxTK already having a shit ton of random/stupid threads.

plus you can be alittle more broad with the discussion now too if that helps.

blazblue already has a form of parrying.
as does sf4, limited as it may be.
smash definitely has a parry mechanic as well.
Marvel and KoF, both use a guard cancel system, which is different but can serve the same purpose.

Battle Fantasia

Tekken has got a nice Universal low parry system~

I havent played tekken in like 2 years…Ugh… I wonder if its gotten better. Unlike KOF which I hear has gotten bad :\

umm unless you play it for yourself, I wouldn’t make half heart’ed statements.
KOFXIII is solid game and it would do you no justice by saying it’s bad when it’s actually a great game…like with VF5…some of the best games get overshadowed by others~

Note: im not trying to come off as a jackass…just saying.

Ive never played Blazblue… All this hype about this game and Ive never even played it. I wonder if I should buy it

I shoulda said online lol

Melty Blood.

Parrying is a great system, but imo, it should come with a price. I think a portion of your meter should be spent attempting to parry a move, similar to how it was in Alpha, except you shouldn’t be allowed to do it while already in blockstun. Otherwise, the game will eventually be ENTIRELY about parrying, baiting a parry, option-selects with a parry, etc etc, and it really detracts from other aspects of fighting games.

just be warned, if you dont like the new school of fighting games with air dashes, dislike the anime aesthetics and or combos in general, perhaps the game could not be your cup of tea
perhaps before buying it you can see some matches online, see if you can play it before purchasing it, and if you like what you see, then go for it

and since you seem interested
go watch some Persona 4 Ultimate to see if it peaks your interest too

and

   DIVEKICK

I think Id be GODLIKE in dive kick…I think il start off using Kick however, since he can move around witout diving or kicking :o
And Im about to watch me some Blazblue right after I finish up this Maximillian video

dont forget Persona 4 Ultimate
the game is really hype
i recomend you to watch this tournament footage

So uhm…Where can I buy this game at? I sure havent seen it at any of the local gamestops. And this is the first time ive heard of it…
And Im gonna check this game of for sure

it would be out for consoles on august 3 for japan, theoretically the worldwide release would be the same month but the day has not been specified yet

Unless I’m mistaken the game hasn’t been localized yet. It’s just in Japan for the moment.

KOF13 is mad juggle heavy for no reason. I hate that shit. I’d rather play 98

That so? First time I’ve heard that statement.
You sure people weren’t talking about the netcode and not the game itself?
Or has really KOF “honest fighting game” XIII suddenly became a bad game without my notice?

It’s funny, someone mentioned that BB had a parry. I assume they were talking about IB and not Makoto.

In Makoto’s case, she can’t parry lows, and there is a wiff animation (though it’s slight), and they had to tone down the parry substantially from CS1 to CS2 to CSEX because of crazy OS issues and damage potential (which was one of the issues with the 3S parry).

As for IB (Instant blocking). It reduced guardstun. In CT and CS1 it reduced it by so much, that it almost broke the game. You could IB and DP punish literally everything in the game (save literally 2 or 3 strings). In CS2 they reduced it from a 5 frame reduction to a 2 frame reduction.

My point is, parries and parry-esque mechanic is retardly powerful by design. In the case of most all modern parries they have been toned down so much from what you remember from 3S that they are barely recognizable. The 3S parry is stupidly powerful, and it’s probably good that it never returned in that form.
