The problem is fitting the standard Korean joystick into the standard Hori or Mad Catz joystick case.
I’m sorry, but that’s by far the HUGE bulk of joystick cases you see at tournaments outside of South Korea. That’s who most of the non-Korean parts vendors are building for.
It’s a pain-and-a-half to try and fit Myoungshin Fanta’s into Hori/Mad Catz cases which is why the new Crown CWJ-303A was developed in mind for the Japanese-style cases. When you tell most people they have to do such-and-such case mod to fit in non-Japanese parts, their eyes glaze over with non-comprehension (that’s well over half the SRK “members” – most who join to find out where things are sold and then cut out never to be heard from again(!)), OR if they have a vague idea of the mod work involved they cut and run through the wall like most sane people would (LOL)!
It’s no fun to cut cases or drill new holes into faceplates to accommodate joysticks with very different specs than the JLF or Seimitsu line. (Heck, it wasn’t fun cutting drilling holes through metal faceplates to accommodate LS-32’s and LS-40’s in my non-universal HRAP’s, either!) Crown has won the very small Korean import market here with the CWJ-303A unless people a) go ahead and mod their cases for the Myoungshin Fanta; or b) buy an equipped, Korean-style joystick case.
I think most people go with the less-complicated, less-involved solution for their needs at least 85% of the time. There are only a few nuts like me who walk in the exact opposite direction because a) we don’t know better; b) we don’t care what everybody else is doing 'cuz we’re individualists to begin with; and c) the simple things are more confusing to us!
There’s not such a big market for these parts in the US or Europe for that matter.
The Korean parts have a reputation of being “Tekken joysticks” and that works against them when most people are playing non-Tekken fighters. It’s a stereotype, yes, but unfortunately people make a lot of economic and personal decisions based on stereotypes.
The reviews on the parts and function with many of the non-Tekken games have been mixed at best from I’ve seen on SRK, too. The Fantas and Crowns are definitely an acquired taste.
I’m not dismissing that there is a crowd of people who love Korean parts but I don’t think it’s anywhere near as big as the number of people who prefer Seimitsu to Sanwa… and even that’s dwarfed by the love for Sanwa which is admittedly overshadowed by the fact that most people will never change the OEM parts in their joystick case let alone mod it because they don’t want to pay more money out of pocket on a joystick they spent at least $80 for… and guess who the big OEM supplier for most joystick manufacturers is now??? Answer: Sanwa for the vast majority of Japanese and Chinese pro-line joysticks. Even Hori doesn’t show much love for Seimitsu outside of a very few limited edition run HRAP’s for the PS3 and XBox 360 joysticks intended (most likely) to be used for 2-D, traditional side-scrolling shooters.
