Damn this makes texas seem bad now. Theft is a growing problem in Houston tbh like its a big problem recently. Nothing is being changed about it. I went up there a month or so back with my friends to an event we went into a bar for like a few hours there were police on bikes riding around the bars and parking lots. We came out after last call and my friends jeep was broken into. Like wtf !!
Hard to put Spooky’s stuff on the same scale. IIRC it was like 2-3 sticks from behind a counter, I don’t even remember if they were his. That’s like 200-300$. The stuff that happened to Mark Man and Panda are multithousand dollar and happened at their car.
Stuff like what happened to spooky has been happening forever in the FGC, especially as it gets bigger. Stick theft is hardly unheard of though it’s still scumbag stuff. Losing like probably close to (or more than) 10k worth of stuff right out of your car? That I think is probably pretty rare in FGC history, and it has happened twice in TWO WEEKS.
As much as it sucks you should never keep that kind of equipment or something of extreme value unattended and out in the open. I know from experience. I had over 3k worth of cards from various games (Magic the gathering, Pokemon…etc) and my arcade stock stolen from my brother in-laws car because I was too lazy to bring my bag inside.
Not going to say he couldn’t have decided to explicitly stay at the car and not take a rest and enjoy a short time with friends after spending all day working to do something for the community. He COULD have done that. However, the other point is: where would he put it if he did decide to go out for less than hour? The amount of equipment is far too much to bring with him. He might not have been staying at a motel and was planning to drive home that night (I don’t know). He couldn’t leave it alone in the venue even if he was allowed to since that also could lead to theft.
That leaves zero options other than “Hey thanks for all your hard work, enjoy eating a mcdonalds hamburger alone in your car. See you briefly next event you come to where you’re too busy to actually talk to anyone for more than a few minutes while tending to the stream setup and/or commentating matches.”
Should probably store expensive equipment like that in the hotel luggage closet next time instead of leaving thousands of dollars worth of equipment exposed in a car at night. Still sucks, though. The person who did this needs to be caught and killed.
What if he is
A. Not staying at a hotel but a motel since it’s cheaper.
B. No longer staying ANYWHERE since he checked out that morning and was planning to drive home right after he ate with friends once the event was over, since maybe he had to work monday afternoon?
I don’t know if either is the case but it’s not always so clear cut as you made it sound. Situations may not have been available.
Even if you check out of a hotel, they still usually let you use their luggage closet for the day. The is especially true for guests who have late flights, but have to check out by 11 AM. If he stayed in a motel then… Shit. I got nothing.
Life isn’t fair. Same to @Eternal. If you don’t secure a location to safely store your extremely valuable shit then you don’t get to go hang out with friends, that is unless you don’t mind risking your expensive shit getting stolen. No you’re car, especially an SUV with Windows everywhere is not a safe place.
I’ve been robbed of an estimated close to 100k of stuff out when my apartment got broken into by people that somehow had THE FUCKING KEYS. The cops didn’t come when neighbors called until almost 2 days later after my neighbors called, because it wasn’t a great neighborhood. The people even stole ALL the food out of my fridge and the airconditioners out of the windows and anything they didn’t steal? They threw into the street if it was small enough then before they left they covered a bunch of the shit they didn’t steal (some pictures they broke, an old couch, a mattress, and parts of thingsthey did steal but didn’t take like the remote) in ajax and dirt. All because I was gone for one weekend.
And that isn’t even the first time I’ve been robbed in my life time, other time I was a little kid and we lost again thousands of dollars of stuff in a totally different city in a better neighborhood just because my mom took me and a friend of her’s son to disney land for the day.
Then you should know better then anyone and shouldn’t be making dumb ass what if situations to excuse leaving thousands of dollars worth of shit unattended in a fucking car.
“He should have left them at the hotel” is just as much of a what if. Were you there? Do you know the situations available to him at the time? The only thing you can know for sure is that he could have not left his care unattended for about an hour. That’s the only thing you can say for certain.
Rather than concentrating on the “what if he did this to prevent it” why not concentrate on “how can we help this situation that has already occurred, improve?”
Things like, trying to get information on who might have been there to do this. How maybe we can set up something to help get some of the equipment back or at least some temporary setups. Maybe discuss how in future events things can be improved with security or doing things such as offering to watch peoples stuff while they grab a well deserved break.
leaving it at the hotel (our using a lockable trailer as had been suggested) are much more viable what if scenarios then “I’ll just leave it in the car, it will be fine”.
I don’t go to events so that’s not a possibility. Your’re welcome to offer next time you’re at an event tho.
I’m sorry you don’t like the reality of the situation.
